As we once more celebrate Pride Month this June, it’s crucial to recognise the progress made by those wedding venues which continue to go the extra mile to create inclusive and welcoming spaces for couples of every sexual orientation and gender. To honour those who champion diversity and inclusion, we’ve compiled a list of our top LGBTQ+ wedding experts: venues which are proud to support and cater to every couple’s style and vision.
At Glewstone Court Country House, fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for all couples is a priority. Joel, a member of the LGBTQ+ community himself, attests to the genuine commitment of the venue: “We take immense pride in fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for all couples, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.”
Personal commitment
Reflecting on his experience, Joel highlights the venue’s genuine commitment to inclusivity. “They have always made me feel welcome and valued, and they have shown a willingness to learn and listen from me, allowing us to adapt our language and practices to be more inclusive and affirming to all couples.”
Celebrating diversity
From hosting numerous weddings for LGBTQ+ couples to participating in Pride events, Glewstone Court celebrates diversity to the very fullest. “From the moment couples walk through our doors, they are embraced for who they are, and their love story becomes our mission to celebrate.”
Inclusive facilities and language
Inclusivity is reflected in every aspect of this venue’s service. “We have ensured that all toilets in the building are unisex and can be used by all and ensure privacy when needed. We also ensure that all staff are aware to not assume gender of couples or wedding guests and they are inclusive and sensitive with their language. We make sure that all marketing materials, including websites, brochures and social media posts, feature diverse representation of LGBTQ+ couples. We also do not use old-fashioned language like ‘Bridal Suite’, and have adapted this to be called the ‘Honeymoon Suite’, which suits all adaptions.”
Celebrating pride
Pride Month is celebrated each year at Glewstone Court Country House with enthusiasm. “We celebrate Pride Month and ensure we have a dedicated post on our social media channels to celebrate.”
Staff training
Regular staff training ensures sensitivity and inclusivity. “We conduct role-playing exercises monthly, to help staff members practice interacting with LGBTQ+ couples in a sensitive and respectful manner. This is super helpful when conducting show rounds with potential couples to ensure we do not follow a script, and we adapt to each and every couple who comes through our doors.”
Acknowledging the ongoing journey
Joel acknowledges the ongoing journey towards complete inclusivity. “I do feel that we still have a long way to go, and we still see enquiries from same-sex couples who still ask if it would be okay to host a same-sex wedding at our venue. This makes us very sad, that some same-sex couples feel a need to ask this question. Of course, we make them feel comfortable and ensure they are looked after and reassure them that they do not have to ask this question. We have, however, seen more and more of an increase in same-sex/LGBTQ+ representation when conducting competitor analysis, which is also nice for me to see.”
Promoting universal LGBTQ+ inclusivity
Joel emphasises the importance of collective effort in promoting LGBTQ+ inclusivity. “I think the more everyone works together and promotes LGBTQ+ community on social media and on supplier/venue websites the better!”
Ruth from Elms Barn highlights the venue’s commitment to inclusivity, pointing out touches like, “couples entering at the same time from two sides of the ceremony space”, “sensitive language for persons of honour and best persons”, and “team members who are part of the LGBTQ+ community.” She sums it up beautifully: “Overall, we treat everyone the same, and if there are ever any special requests to help everyone feel included and special, we will deliver.”
Fostering representation
Ruth emphasises their efforts to reflect and include all types of couples, including featuring blog posts about same-sex couples and ensuring photos of the venue and couples cover all types of couples, “so everyone is reflected and included.”
Practising sensitivity
In their staff training, Ruth explains that discussions are regularly held on sensitive language, and that she herself makes notes on all running orders where there are people with specific pronoun preferences, “to make sure everyone is actively aware of the language they should be using.”
Celebrating all love equally
Ruth believes that there should be no difference between an LGBTQ+ wedding and any other wedding: “In the past, I have found staff and management could be on edge and try too hard to include couples, which actually makes things awkward and forced. Now, anyone can love anyone, and we don’t need to think of any wedding as anything other than a magical day which the couple has designed in a way that is best for them and their guests.”
Bespoke celebrations
Elms Barn is proud to create every wedding completely bespoke for each couple. Ruth explains that they “have had everything from rainbow wedding cakes to very understated LGBTQ+ weddings, and that when planning each celebration, they will “listen to that couple to see where on that spectrum they fit best.”
Year-round visibility
Ruth ensures that the exposure is there for all LGBTQ+ weddings throughout the year, not just “as a Pride gimmick”, a point we agree is super important to highlight. She also refers to “a few photographers I always recommend to LGBTQ+ couples, as I know they make everyone feel so comfortable regardless.”
Another steadfast advocate for inclusivity is Chris from The Old Mill (Aldermaston). Reflecting on their journey, Chris shares, “We are proud to have celebrated and hosted a variety of LGBTQ+ weddings, and have built a team that is LGBTQ+ inclusive, all of whom are key members of our business. We have always welcomed diversity and will continue to do so.”
Embracing uniqueness
Chris emphasises the importance of understanding and realising each couple’s unique vision: “We find it crucial to know the couple and help bring their vision to life. Whether it’s adding lots of colour to the decor, incorporating multicoloured confetti, or ensuring both partners have their moment walking down the aisle, we strive to create a timeless wedding day.”
Community support beyond weddings
The Old Mill’s support for the LGBTQ+ community extends beyond weddings alone. “Although weddings are our main engagement with the LGBTQ+ community, we actively support them both in and out of the workplace. We embrace the changes they want to bring into the workplace that make them feel more valued. We encourage and celebrate their activities outside of work as we recognise and honour their passion for celebrating their individuality.”
Celebrating progress
Chris expresses immense pride in the growing acceptance of LGBTQ+ weddings. “It’s hugely rewarding to see how LGBTQ+ weddings have become accepted by society over the years. Witnessing this evolution into the new normal is emotionally touching. We are thrilled to be hosting more LGBTQ+ weddings than ever before this year, including our director’s wedding!”
Diversity within the workplace
Having a diverse and inclusive team is central to The Old Mill’s approach: “Having a diverse and inclusive team reassures our couples that all of their guests and they themselves will have the wedding experience they deserve.”
Supporting individuality
For both Chris and the team, supporting individuality and embracing each person’s natural personality is paramount: “It’s always important to us to support individuality and encourage our couples and colleagues to bring their natural personality to everything they do, both personally and professionally.”

Deana and Tim own the farm and live in the main farmhouse. Deana hails from Hong Kong and has a mixed Chinese/English heritage. Diversity and inclusion are therefore of great personal importance to them both.
They are one of the few venues that are wheelchair accessible in all areas, and one of their Wedding Cottages is also wheelchair accessible
They welcome all couples to the farm, and cater to all backgrounds and beliefs
Reception spaces
Oak Barn boasts four versatile reception spaces within the sustainable farm:
The Oak Barn
A stunning Grade II listed threshing barn stands as the estate’s centrepiece, and is a popular option for large weddings. Its gorgeous high-vaulted roof, exposed beams and floor-to-ceiling glass doors accommodate up to 135 guests for ceremonies, 135 for formal dining, and 200 for evening receptions. Hidden in the fabric of the building is a high-tech light and sound system, and it’s perfect in all seasons due to the air conditioning system, underfloor heating and wood burner.
The Byre
The Byre is an adaptable space with floor-to-ceiling glass doors that bathe the interior in beautiful natural light and flow onto the terrace and into the charming sheep field. This elegant location accommodates 100 guests for ceremonies, 60 for formal dining, and 100 for relaxed evening receptions.
Pole Barn
Steeped in rustic charm, this large open-fronted barn and wood store is stripped back and more understated in style, but also decked in pretty fairy and festoon lights, and is home to a fabulous 1956 Fordson Major tractor. Retaining the character of its humble origins, it is the venue’s most versatile events space, providing the perfect backdrop for a laid-back ceremony and drinks reception, as well as joyous garden games and romantic couples’ portraits.
The Byre’s Terrace
This is a magnificent option for an outdoor wedding ceremony, offering the perfect place to exchange vows and relax with loved ones, gaze at the glorious sunset over the Kent countryside and the lily pond, and tune in to nature.
Onsite accommodation
Unlike many other barn venues, Weaver’s Cottages offers luxurious onsite accommodation where couples can relish a few extra days with their loved ones. Staying at the farm will ensure the perfect start to your wedding celebrations. You’ll have plenty of time to settle in, unwind, and really make the most of the magical setting, surrounded by your closest friends and family members.
Meet the venue’s owners
Deana was introduced to weddings when she started working in hotels in Asia, and loved everything about them. In her own words:
“When Tim and I first saw Frame Farm we fell in love with it and knew that it could be transformed into a breathtaking venue surrounded by sheep fields, for couples to create a bespoke wedding that would reflect them as a couple. It took a three and a half years’ renovation project to give the farm a new lease of life. We watched our ideas turn into a beautiful reality. Our vision was to create a venue where our couples could curate a dream day or multi-day wedding, within an eco and sustainable environment. Then on 2 February 2019, whilst the sun glistened on the snow, we hosted our first wedding.”
Deana continues: “It is a joy coming to work each day and the satisfaction is immense. We love seeing all our couples’ plans and styling come together on their wedding day, and witnessing the pure love and joy as our couples celebrate one of the most amazing occasions of their life with their friends and family. It always makes my heart swell! So many of our couples stay in touch, eagerly share their wedding photos and videos with us, and come back to stay for their anniversary, or return for their children’s naming ceremonies – which means so much to us. We pride ourselves on building the most caring relationships with our brides and grooms, who ultimately put their trust in us.”
Memorable moments
We asked Deana and Tim to share their most memorable wedding to date, and any particularly unusual or fun experiences. They share:
“Each wedding at the farm is so unique that it is so very hard to choose, and this is what makes Oak Barn, Frame Farm, so special. We do love seeing what transport our couples will arrive in – from classic buses and cars to a truck cab and sports cars. We must admit that witnessing couples landing by helicopter in the field next to The Byre’s terrace for their Grand Entrance into their ceremony, has certainly been unforgettable, both for ourselves and their wedding guests.”
Having the farm turned into an “English Fayre” with Morris dancers in the Pole Barn, and archery, axe throwing and wild bird displays in the fields was also a particularly memorable moment for the owners.
They also revealed that The Pole Barn is the most versatile space where couples can go wild with some incredibly fun ideas. These include:
Mini golf circuits
Pin ball machines
Pool/air hockey tables
Chill-out areas with bars
Skittles competitions
Morris dancers
Vintage games
Photo booths
In the field adjacent to The Byre’s terrace where reception drinks can be hosted, the owners also have reports of some amazing…
Wild bird displays
Giant chess games
Axe throwing
Archery contests
Croquet

Phoebe Stanaway: Elisabeth Shell Events, Bespoke Wedding Planning
Phoebe Stanaway’s journey into the world of wedding planning began with a desire for freedom – the freedom to work on her own terms, from wherever she pleased, and to pursue a career that brought her joy. Reflecting on her decision to found Elisabeth Shell Events, she shares, “I decided to start my own business to give myself the three big freedoms: time, financial and location.”
An innate people person, Phoebe thrives in the fast-paced, dynamic environment of wedding planning. With a background in hospitality, including managing a cocktail bar in the heart of the city and running restaurants in London, she found her true calling in orchestrating weddings. “Not one day is ever the same in my life and I love it,” she exclaims. “A wedding really does tick all my boxes and flexes the muscles I have of things I’m really good at!”
With over 400 weddings under her belt and a string of accolades to her name, including being a Regional Finalist for The Wedding Industry Awards 2023 and Highly Commended in 2022, Phoebe’s expertise is undeniable. Yet, she remains grounded, recognising the challenges that come with balancing work and personal life. “Balancing demanding work schedules with personal life can be challenging,” she admits. “It’s also very difficult to keep boundaries in place with clients sometimes, especially without coming across as too assertive as a woman.”
Despite the challenges, Phoebe finds motivation in the sheer enjoyment she derives from her work. “I’m fun, I’m friendly. I get stuck in,” she declares. Her job has seen her in some extraordinary situations, from securing a marquee in headland winds to running pizzas through a snowstorm for an entire wedding breakfast. “My job pretty much is overcoming obstacles,” she says. “I just remember to take a deep breath, think creatively and believe that there’s always a solution – I just need to find it.”
Phoebe is passionate about the representation of women in the wedding industry and the diversity of love that it encompasses. She believes that women are leading the way in redefining wedding customs and traditions, shining lights onto the LGBTQ+ scene and highlighting disability awareness. “That also encourages others to step outside the box and look at how they might be able to use a hobby, or love or craft etc around their family commitments, and contribute to such a vibrant industry,” she remarks.
Amidst the hustle and bustle of wedding planning, Phoebe emphasises the importance of self-care and wellness. “I’ve burnt out before,” she admits. “If no one is going to die, I can have a day off. Nothing is that dramatic. I just need to remind myself of that, often.”
As Elisabeth Shell Events continues to evolve, Phoebe is committed to inclusivity and representation. While acknowledging that there is room for improvement, she is proactive in her efforts to create a more inclusive environment. “I absolutely am committed to doing my best to do better!” she affirms.
Phoebe’s journey in the wedding industry is a testament to her resilience, creativity, and unwavering commitment to her values. As she looks towards the future, she remains steadfast in her pursuit of excellence and inclusivity, ensuring that every couple she works with feels seen, heard and celebrated.
Ruby McGonigle’s journey into the jewellery industry began with a sense of wonder and discovery amidst the vibrant gemstone markets of the Far East. Reflecting on those early days, she reminisces, “I still fondly remember my trips to Hong Kong at the very beginning and the incredible stones that surrounded me; carved, engraved, whittled into miniature sculptures, cut to enhance their natural flaws… I felt like a kid in a sweet shop.”
However, it was during these travels that she also confronted the darker realities of the trade. She recalls, “I bore witness to the dark side of the jewellery trade; the cheap prices, the offices filled to the brim with stacks upon stacks of farmed freshwater pearls, the child labour, the gemstones with murky histories circulating the market.” This experience sparked a deep commitment to ethical practices within the industry.
Armed with a passion for design and a commitment to ethics, Ruby pursued a Master’s degree in Design at Central Saint Martin’s, focusing her studies on the ethical implications within the jewellery industry. She shares, “When I met a Hatton Garden diamond dealer who told me nonchalantly, ‘When you work in this trade you sell your soul to the devil,’ I knew then that it didn’t need to be that way.”
Driven by a desire to challenge the status quo, Ruby founded Lebrusan Studio, a brand dedicated to sustainable luxury. “I didn’t set out to become a bridal jeweller,” she explains, “but I quickly recognised that engagement rings, wedding bands and commitment rings are some of the most meaningful jewels people will ever own.”
Over the past 12 years, Ruby’s impact has been profound. From championing Fairtrade Gold to delivering a TEDx talk on ethical jewellery, she has consistently pushed boundaries and garnered recognition for her efforts. Reflecting on her journey, she expresses, “I feel incredibly proud to reflect on all the ways my little homespun lifestyle brand has created a wave in the jewellery industry.”
Yet, amidst the accolades and achievements, Ruby remains focused on her mission to create meaningful, sustainable jewellery that resonates with her customers. “It’s crucial that jewels with such significance tell stories their wearers can feel proud of,” she insists.
Reflecting on the gender dynamics within the industry, Ruby highlights the importance of fostering a culture of compassion and collaboration. “Gender equality can only be achieved if we shape our industries around compassion and nurturing, sharing knowledge and supporting other women,” she asserts.
In the face of growing consumer demand for sustainability, Ruby acknowledges the need for greater transparency and education within the industry. She emphasises, “One of the biggest challenges we’re currently facing is the need to educate consumers; to equip them with the knowledge they need to navigate a heavily greenwashed market.”
For Ruby, inspiration comes not only from the exquisite craftsmanship of her colleagues but also from the diverse voices and perspectives that shape the wedding industry. “We are all valuable assets in a sturdy, interwoven net that uplifts me every day,” she reflects.
Ruby recognises the profound influence of the wedding industry, particularly on young girls. She remarks, “For so many little girls, the wedding realm is a source of aspiration, awe and inspiration from a young age; its influence on these impressionable brains is not to be underestimated.” She believes that seeing diverse representations in the industry is crucial for fostering feelings of self-worth and empowerment.
As she continues to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of the jewellery industry, Ruby remains committed to authenticity and innovation. Her advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is simple yet profound: “It’s crucial that you are authentic and unique… Once you’ve found what makes you unparalleled and you believe in it, you are unstoppable.”
In her quest for inclusivity, Ruby and Lebrusan Studio have actively worked to amplify LGBTQ+ voices within the bridal jewellery space. She shares, “We’re aware that LGBTQ+ visibility is insufficient within the bridal jewellery industry so we strive actively for better inclusivity within our own business.” From gender-neutral love rings to dedicated resources for LGBTQ+ couples, Ruby’s commitment to diversity and representation shines through in every facet of her business.
Kerri O’Brien: Francis + Louise, Contemporary Luxury Accessories
Celebrating its sixth year in operation, Francis + Louise is more than just a business for Kerri O’Brien; it’s a passion project born out of a love for design and a desire to create something truly unique. With a background in print design for the fashion industry, including collaborations with renowned brands like Calvin Klein and Anthropologie, Kerri transitioned into the world of weddings after designing her own bespoke print for her wedding. “Our wedding was featured on the wedding blog Love My Dress,” she recalls, “and from there, I got my first international order.”
From those humble beginnings, Francis + Louise has grown into a thriving venture, offering both ready-to-wear collections and bespoke print design services. What sets Kerri’s brand apart is not just its aesthetic appeal but also its commitment to sustainability and traceability. “I’m really proud that all my products are made, designed and printed in the UK,” she explains. “The traceability and sustainability of my products are something really important to me and are clearly important to my customers too.”
As a woman navigating the wedding industry, Kerri has found support and camaraderie among her peers. “Everyone is really supportive,” she says, “and I have made lots of amazing friends and been able to collaborate with other business owners, many of them female founders.”
However, running a business single-handedly comes with its challenges, especially when juggling multiple responsibilities. “When you are managing all aspects of your business… it is impossible to not feel clouded, confused and overwhelmed at times,” Kerri admits. Yet, she finds solace in yoga, meditation, and connecting with fellow creatives. “Sometimes just talking to someone else in the same boat makes it so much better and problems are solved quicker,” she adds.
Kerri is deeply committed to challenging the entrenched gender roles that dominate the wedding industry. She reflects on the prevalent portrayal of women in traditional roles in films, literature and magazines, where brides are often depicted as being “given away” by their fathers and where virginal white remains the norm for wedding dresses. This pervasive imagery influences couples’ choices for their own weddings, perpetuating a narrow definition of what a wedding should look like.
However, Kerri sees her products as a refreshing departure from these conventions. “I love that my products often bring a strong influence of colour into a ceremony,” she says. Through her bespoke print designs, she offers couples the opportunity to break away from tradition and express their unique personalities and styles. Kerri finds that her design service particularly resonates with couples seeking a less traditional approach to their special day.
Attending events like the Un-Wedding Show, which celebrates modern and independent wedding suppliers, Kerri recognises the growing demand for alternative wedding experiences. Yet, she acknowledges that there is still a lack of representation of less-traditional female roles within the industry as a whole. By actively promoting inclusivity and diversity through her work, Kerri hopes to inspire a shift towards more progressive and inclusive weddings.
Despite the challenges, Kerri remains grateful for the opportunity to pursue her passion while balancing work and family life. “I feel very grateful I get to do something I love every day and am able to work it around my kids,” she says.
Looking ahead, Kerri is committed to empowering other women in business and encouraging them to value their worth. “I would encourage all female business owners to be more bold with their prices from the start,” she advises. “Price your worth and wealth of experience.”
Through her dedication to craftsmanship and inclusivity, Kerri O’Brien is not just creating beautiful prints; she’s crafting memories that will last a lifetime for couples around the world.
Holly Miller: Cake Design by Holly Miller
For Holly Miller, the allure of entrepreneurship lies in the freedom it offers – the flexibility to balance her thriving cake business with the joys of motherhood. “Running my own business enables me to be at home with my children when they need me,” she shares, relishing the autonomy of setting her own rules in the ever-evolving wedding industry.
Her passion for crafting exquisite confections has earned her prestigious accolades, including the title of TWIA National Wedding Cake Designer of the Year 2024. “Becoming the best in my field,” Holly reflects, “fuels my obsession to succeed.”
As a woman who is unapologetically outspoken and fiercely independent, Holly occasionally grapples with perceptions of being too forward. “I remind myself,” she asserts, “that I am a strong-minded, badass businesswoman.” For Holly, motivation is innate and intrinsic, stemming from her unwavering dedication to her craft. “My business is like my baby,” she admits, “and I live and breathe it.”
In an industry brimming with creativity, Holly finds inspiration in the success stories of fellow female entrepreneurs. “It truly shows women can do it all,” she declares, celebrating their achievements as key figures in fabulous brands and businesses.
Despite the demands of entrepreneurship, Holly prioritises downtime with her family, recognising the importance of unplugging from work. “Days out, board games, dog walks,” she lists, cherishing moments of respite away from the bustle of business.
Her advice to aspiring entrepreneurs echoes her own journey – resilience, focus and an unwavering work ethic are the ingredients for success. “Just go for it!” she urges, a testament to her own remarkable ascent from baking cakes for her kids’ birthdays to becoming a nationally acclaimed cake designer.
Pollyanna Montagu: Pollyanna Harmsworth, Fine Stationers
For Pollyanna Montagu, founder of Pollyanna Harmsworth, Fine Stationers, the journey into entrepreneurship began with a childhood dream of independence and autonomy. “From a very young age, when all my friends wanted to be ballerinas, I wanted to be a businesswoman!” she reminisces, highlighting her early inclination towards forging her own path. Owning her own business serves as her sanctuary, a space where she can express herself freely and pursue her passion for fine stationery.
Celebrating 15 years of entrepreneurial success stands as Pollyanna’s most cherished achievement. Through the highs and lows, she remains steadfast in her dedication to her craft and the relationships she has cultivated along the way.
Navigating the printing industry poses its challenges, with misconceptions often clouding perceptions of her expertise. Yet, Pollyanna’s depth of knowledge and passion for her craft shines through, dispelling any doubts with her insightful contributions.
Supported by her family and a trusted mentor, Pollyanna finds strength in the encouragement of her loved ones and the guidance of a seasoned confidante. Their unwavering support fuels her determination to overcome obstacles and pursue her aspirations.
As a woman in business, Pollyanna recognises the importance of female representation in navigating delicate conversations and fostering inclusivity. Her tactful approach and sensitivity to others’ needs contribute to creating an environment where everyone feels valued and understood.
Balancing work commitments with family time remains a priority for Pollyanna, with a newfound determination to be fully present with her children, free from distractions. Despite the demands of entrepreneurship, she strives to honour her commitments to her family and be present for life’s precious moments.
Reflecting on her journey, Pollyanna offers a simple yet powerful message to aspiring entrepreneurs: “Go for it.” With unwavering determination and a passion for her craft, she encourages others to pursue their dreams fearlessly.
In Pollyanna’s world, weddings represent joyous celebrations of life and love, where diversity is embraced and every detail is crafted with elegance and care. Through her work, she creates timeless pieces that celebrate the unique love stories of each couple, fostering an atmosphere of inclusivity and celebration.
Genevieve Hawks: Queen Bea Photography
For Genevieve Hawks, Queen Bea Photography, venturing into wedding photography stemmed from personal experiences. “I had a lot of negative experiences when planning my own wedding (to another woman),” she shares candidly, reflecting on the lack of diversity she encountered in the industry back in 2018. Determined to carve her own path, Genevieve discovered her passion for photography upon returning from her honeymoon – a decision she has never regretted.
With over 200 weddings under her belt, Genevieve’s journey has been both exhilarating and challenging. “All the misogyny,” she laments, recounting instances of unwarranted questioning and condescension from male wedding guests. Despite the frustrations, Genevieve remains steadfast in her love for photography and her commitment to creating an inclusive space for couples.
In an industry predominantly led by women, Genevieve finds solace in the camaraderie and support of her peers. “It’s a lovely community,” she remarks, highlighting the importance of representation and listening to the diverse voices of brides.
Balancing her passion with the demands of the job, Genevieve acknowledges the sacrifices involved. “I’m often working well into the evenings,” she admits, a testament to her dedication to her craft.
Her advice to aspiring entrepreneurs in the wedding industry is simple yet empowering: “Just believe in yourself and go for it!” Genevieve’s own journey serves as a testament to the power of self-belief and resilience.
As a member of the LGBTQ+ community herself, Genevieve is committed to visibility and inclusivity in her work. “I try to always show a mix of couples,” she explains, emphasising the importance of representation in her marketing and social media presence. Through her lens, Genevieve captures not just moments, but stories of love, resilience and authenticity, ensuring that every couple feels seen and celebrated.
Kate Dyer: Kate and Kate Celebrants
Kate Dyer, co-founder of Kate and Kate Celebrants, has always relished the freedom of doing things her own way and avoiding the need to answer to others. For her, owning a business is more than just a venture – it’s a “calm, happy, safe space” where she finds peace and security.
Reflecting on her entrepreneurial journey, Kate shares her passion for creating bespoke wedding ceremonies. With fifteen years of experience as a wedding registrar, Kate and her colleague felt compelled to break free from the constraints of the system in 2016 and become Independent Celebrants.
“It was a leap of faith, driven by our determination to give couples the perfect ceremony to start their special day,” she explains. “We had solid relationships with reputable wedding venues, so we embarked on this journey with confidence.”
Kate’s dedication to delivering exceptional ceremonies has earned her a stellar reputation within the industry. “There’s no greater satisfaction than hearing guests declare it the best wedding ever!” she exclaims. Working independently alongside her best friend allows them the freedom to infuse each ceremony with creativity and flair.
“While the creative aspect of our work flourished, navigating the business side presented challenges,” Kate admits. “Business acumen wasn’t our forte, but with free advice and a steep learning curve, we honed our skills in areas like cash-flow forecasting, marketing and SEO.”
Having a supportive partner by her side has been instrumental in overcoming obstacles, especially during the uncertainties brought about by the pandemic. “Our differences complement each other, and knowing we have each other’s backs keeps us resilient in the face of adversity,” she shares.
Kate emphasises the importance of female representation in the UK wedding industry. “By empowering women, the industry becomes more inclusive, diverse and empowering for all involved,” she notes.
Maintaining work-life balance is an ongoing challenge for Kate. “Setting boundaries, staying organised and effective time management are essential,” she explains. “Despite occasional mishaps, like forgetting to pick up my daughter from college, I strive to keep all the plates spinning while acknowledging my limitations.”
For aspiring entrepreneurs, Kate offers this advice: “Seek as much free advice as possible, understand that building a business takes time, and find your tribe of like-minded colleagues for support and camaraderie. Embrace the journey and enjoy the ride!”
“At Kate and Kate Celebrants, love knows no bounds,” Kate concludes. “We celebrate diversity and inclusivity by offering a wide range of options to accommodate different cultures, backgrounds and preferences, ensuring every couple feels valued and respected on their wedding planning journey.”
Louise Quenby: Jackstar Weddings, Wedding DJ Services
For Louise Quenby, at Jackstar Weddings, the journey into entrepreneurship began with a shared passion for creating unforgettable wedding experiences. “Running my own business was something that I had thought about a lot,” she recalls, reflecting on her aspirations from college days. Together with her husband, Jack, whose background as a DJ ignited their path, they ventured into the world of weddings, starting with a white LED dance floor purchase in 2012. As they delved deeper into the wedding scene, attending their first wedding fair marked a significant turning point, propelling their business forward.
Louise’s journey continues to be one of remarkable achievements and ongoing growth. “There are so many [highlights], but the most recent,” she beams, “is that after winning The Wedding Industry Awards for 4 years in a row, I am now a judge. And to add to that, the ONLY female judge on the DJ panel.” Her accolades speak volumes about her expertise and dedication to her craft.
However, Louise acknowledges the challenges that come with balancing a demanding career with motherhood. “My challenge doesn’t link to working within the wedding industry, just working in general,” she reflects. Yet, she remains resilient, constantly striving to find the equilibrium between her professional and personal life.
Setting goals has been instrumental in Louise’s journey. “Each year I sit down and set new goals,” she shares. These goals serve as a guiding light, reminding her of the purpose behind her endeavours and motivating her to push through the tough times.
Despite being a thriving industry, Louise feels that wedding professionals often don’t receive the recognition they deserve. “I feel that the wedding industry is heavily represented in the wedding industry,” she notes wryly, highlighting the misconception that their work is merely a hobby rather than a profession.
For Louise, achieving balance means prioritising time with her family. “For me now though I ensure I take one day off during the week and try to have at least one day off at the weekend,” she explains. Her commitment to spending quality time with her children is unwavering, evident in the deliberate scheduling of holidays and breaks throughout the year.
Her advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is simple yet profound: “Write down your dream.” Louise attributes much of her success to this practice, emphasising the importance of turning dreams into tangible goals and taking proactive steps towards realising them.
In her work with couples, Louise embraces diversity and inclusivity. “We have worked with same-sex couples providing their wedding entertainment, along with working with couples from different cultures,” she shares. Celebrating love in all its forms, Louise ensures that each wedding reflects the unique personalities and backgrounds of the couple, creating unforgettable experiences for all involved.
Joanne Dodds: CAVE (Composer, Arranger, Violinist and Educator)
Joanne Dodds, proud founder of CAVE, was a former Royal Navy Warfare Officer who found her true calling in the world of music. “When I left my job,” she recounts, “I wanted to return to my musical roots and started to compose and arrange music for weddings and special events, making couples’ special days even more unique and memorable.” For Joanne, music isn’t just a profession; it’s a passion that adds depth and emotion to life’s most significant moments.
Transitioning to complete self-employment marked a significant milestone in Joanne’s career. She celebrates “becoming completely self-employed and doing what I absolutely adore!” Her versatility as a violinist knows no bounds, as she effortlessly weaves together melodies ranging from AC/DC to Game of Thrones, Billie Eilish to Elvis, infusing each performance with her unique style and flair.
While the wedding industry may be predominantly female-owned, Joanne’s background in male-dominated workplaces has given her a different perspective. “I have always worked in male-dominated workplaces (Royal Navy, Football…),” she notes. However, as a soloist, gender dynamics take a back seat to her love for music and her commitment to providing exceptional service.
Joanne views her role in the music industry as a privilege, recognising the profound impact music has on people’s lives. “Music is a powerful backdrop to all aspects of life,” she reflects. Her calm demeanour and organisational skills, honed through years of experience, ensure smooth sailing even in the busiest of times.
In her experience, Joanne observes that brides often take the lead in booking musical services for their weddings. However, she’s delighted to see an increasing number of grooms surprising their partners with her performances, adding an extra layer of joy to the occasion.
Despite her hectic schedule, Joanne emphasises the importance of self-care. “It has taken me years to learn to slow down and take time for myself,” she admits. Yet, her genuine love for music fuels her passion, turning what could be just a job into a labour of love.
Her advice to aspiring musicians is straightforward: “Just go for it!” Joanne encourages others to pursue their dreams fearlessly, unencumbered by doubts or the safety net of traditional employment.
For Joanne, every wedding is a unique opportunity to showcase the versatility of the violin. “I like to prove that any genre or style of music can be played on the violin,” she asserts. Her commitment to making each wedding as special and personalised as possible reflects her belief that love knows no bounds when it comes to music.

Your wedding day is one of the greatest moments in your life. It’s a celebration of love and commitment, and finding the perfect venue sets the tone for the entire event. While grand ballrooms and fancy destinations have their appeal, there’s something magical about choosing a smaller, more local wedding venue. In this post, we explore the benefits of choosing an intimate setting for your big day, from affordability to on-site accommodation.
1. Affordability
One of the biggest advantages of choosing a smaller, local wedding venue is the cost. These venues often offer competitive pricing compared to larger, grander venues. With a more modest guest capacity, you can trim down your guest list to include only your closest family and friends, which can save a considerable amount on catering, decor and other expenses.
2. Intimacy
Smaller wedding venues create an intimate and cosy atmosphere that larger venues can struggle to replicate. Imagine exchanging your vows surrounded by the people who mean the most to you, without the vastness of a cavernous hall. The closeness of your loved ones creates a warm and inviting ambiance, ensuring that every moment feels personal and special.
3. Personalised Attention
Local venues often cater to fewer events at a time, allowing their staff to dedicate more time and attention to your big day. You’ll likely receive more personalised service and flexibility in tailoring the arrangements to suit your preferences. Smaller venues can accommodate specific requests that larger wedding venues may find more challenging to fulfil.
4. Amazing Outdoor Spaces
Many smaller, local wedding venues are nestled in picturesque settings, boasting breathtaking outdoor spaces. From charming gardens to quaint courtyards, these venues offer natural backdrops that enhance the beauty of your ceremony and wedding photos.
5. On-Site Accommodation
Opting for a smaller venue with on-site accommodation can hugely simplify your wedding day logistics. It provides a convenient solution for both you and your guests, removing the need for transportation to and from separate locations. Plus, it extends the celebration, allowing you to spend more quality time with your loved ones over the wedding weekend.
6. Supporting Local Businesses
By choosing a smaller, local wedding venue, you contribute to the community and support local businesses. These venues are often family-owned or run by passionate individuals dedicated to creating a memorable experience for couples tying the knot. Your wedding becomes an opportunity to give back to the neighbourhood and make a positive impact.

Don’t underestimate the charm and advantages of smaller, local wedding venues. From cost savings to a more intimate and personalised experience, these venues offer unique perks that can make your special day even more memorable. Take your time to explore the options in your area, and you may just find a hidden gem that captures the spirit of your love story.
But, did you know that a church wedding is actually one of the most affordable venues you could choose? And it has the added benefit of being historical, full of character and meaning, and absolutely stunning.
Think about it: you’re in a building that could be as much as 1,500 years old. You’re surrounded by your friends and family, and you lock eyes with your spouse-to-be at the other end of the aisle, and a priest marries the two of you in a wonderful, personal ceremony. Doesn’t that sound perfect? The icing on the cake is the fact that it’s also far cheaper to get married in a church than in many other popular venues.
In this post, we’re going to dive into how much a church wedding costs, including the differences between Anglican and Roman Catholic churches, and the additional costs to be aware of before deciding whether or not a church wedding is for you.
What’s the average cost of a church wedding?
In the UK, the average cost of a church wedding is £5,480, which makes it the second cheapest type of wedding venue behind getting married at a registry office, and even more affordable than choosing a restaurant as your wedding venue. But, getting married in a church is still 45% cheaper than the average cost of a wedding venue in the UK, which is £9,877.
These figures include the ceremony itself, as well as the reception and breakfast, but not your attire, rings, transport, photographer and everything else to do with the wedding. You’ll also have to factor in costs related to the engagement ring and honeymoon.
But, depending on the type of church you get married in, this figure can vary dramatically. For more information on wedding costs, read our complete guide to the average cost of a wedding.
The cost of getting married in different churches
In the UK, the cost of a church wedding will differ depending on whether you get married in an Anglican church or a Roman Catholic church. The one you choose will, of course, depend on your beliefs and preferences.
How much does it cost to get married in an Anglican church?
If you’re getting married in an Anglican church in your local parish, the cost of a wedding (as of 2024) will be a maximum of £539. If you’re getting married in a church that isn’t local, the maximum cost will be £641.
Anglican churches, which include the Church of England and the Church in Wales, have the same beliefs but different governing bodies. Despite these differences, weddings in both will generally cost the same, but it’s always worth checking with your local vicar, especially if you’re getting married in a Welsh Anglican church.
The cost includes most of the bare bones things needed for the ceremony itself, including the vicar, the church, calling your banns, the banns certificate, heating and lighting, and any administration charges. However, it doesn’t include the cost of the marriage certificate, which you’ll need to pay for at a registry office at a later date.
How much does it cost to get married in a Roman Catholic church?
There’s no cost to getting married in a Roman Catholic church, as marriage is said to be a gift from God. However, they will ask for a donation of around £150 to help with the general maintenance, running and upkeep of the church.
Before you run to book your Roman Catholic church wedding, there are a couple of stipulations. Firstly, at least one of you must be Roman Catholic in order for the two of you to get married in a Roman Catholic church. Secondly, you must give the church at least six months’ notice, which means you can’t use a Roman Catholic church if you’re hoping to get married quickly.
What extras do you have to be aware of with a church wedding?
The ceremony the church provides as part of its offering doesn’t include extras, such as an organist, verger, extra heating and bell ringing, nor the costs of other vendors you might want to include as part of the ceremony, such as flowers, a photographer and/or videographer.
Speak to your priest about what extras they can provide and how much they cost, but below will give you a rough idea:
Organist – around £50
Bell ringing – around £40
Verger – around £40
Extra heating – around £65
You may also be asked about an additional donation to contribute towards the general costs associated with the church; however, this is a voluntary donation. Many churches can cost between £40,000 and £100,000 per year to run, so any amount you care to donate will be welcome.
Of course, none of these extras are mandatory, but you may choose to have them so you have music, the magic of ringing church bells and heating to warm your guests – particularly if you’re having a winter wedding. Churches can get pretty cold!
What about the wedding breakfast and evening reception?
While it will often cost you around £1,000 to get married in a church (or less if you choose not to donate) you also need to bear in mind the cost of the post-ceremony wedding breakfast and evening reception you may want to hold so you can celebrate your marriage with your loved ones.
Unfortunately, you won’t be able to host your celebrations at the church itself – but there may be a neighbouring church hall or community hall you could use. Alternatively, a pub with a function room, local restaurant, or hotel are great venues for a breakfast and/or reception.
Depending on how and where you choose to celebrate, it will bump up the cost of your church wedding. But as we highlighted earlier, you’re still more likely to pay significantly less than the average UK wedding.

Planning your wedding can be a fun, challenging and rewarding process. But as you put together everything you need, including your choice of venue, food, attire, cake, transport and more, it can also be an expensive process.
If you’re getting married on a budget, a hotel wedding is a fantastic option. Everything you need, from the ceremony to the reception, is right there in one place. Not only does this make a hotel wedding super appealing, but it has the added bonus of being far more affordable than weddings that take place in other venues.
In this post, we’re going to dive into how much a hotel wedding costs, including the average cost, what factors can affect that cost and why it might just be the right option for you for your special day.
Can you get married in a hotel?
Yes, you can get married in a hotel. Many hotels have function rooms that make for a beautiful setting for a wedding, and also include many other facilities, such as catering and accommodation, to ensure you and your guests have a fabulous day.
What is a hotel wedding?
A hotel wedding is a wedding that takes place entirely in a hotel. One half (or both halves) of the happy couple will wake up in the hotel, get ready, welcome guests, and have the ceremony, the photographs, the breakfast and the reception all without so much as stepping out of the hotel’s grounds.
Some hotels offer all-inclusive wedding packages, and may even have an event or wedding planner that will work with you to help plan your big day. Because they’re equipped to handle almost every part of your wedding, you might not need to rely on many additional vendors, which makes a hotel wedding one of the most affordable types of wedding out there.
What’s the average cost of a hotel wedding?
You may be thinking, how much does a wedding cost in a hotel? It must be expensive, right? Well, in the UK, the average cost of a hotel wedding is £7,324, meaning it comes in cheaper than the average cost of a venue, which is £9,877.
Hotel weddings are the most popular choice of venue in the UK, with almost a quarter (24%) of couples choosing one to host their big day. Hotels offer the perfect balance of luxury, elegance, capacity, convenience and affordability. If you’re looking for this combination but have a smaller budget, you could go for a registry office wedding or a church wedding, which are the two of the cheapest wedding venue types.
Of course, this is just an average cost and prices can vary, but it should give you a good indication of what you might expect to pay for a hotel wedding. For more information on wedding costs, read our complete guide to the average cost of UK weddings.
Why is a hotel wedding a great choice for your wedding?
Thinking about a hotel wedding but not sure if it’s the right choice for you? Here are a few reasons why it should be high on your list of considerations:
It’s convenient having everything in one location, including accommodation, catering, the ceremony and the reception.
Many hotels offer packages, making the planning process simple.
The hotel staff are experts at ensuring guest satisfaction and will be on hand to make sure your day goes perfectly.
The chefs spend all day, every day cooking similar dishes to the ones on your chosen menu, so you can be confident the food will be delicious.
Many hotels, especially those out in the country, have beautiful outdoor spaces, which will be perfect for your photographs.
Your guests can just fall into bed at the end of the evening.
You don’t need to worry about the weather spoiling your plans.
Check out our huge selection of hotels to find the ideal venue for your big day, with many offering exclusive Bridebook discounts.
What factors can affect the cost of a hotel wedding?
While the average cost of a hotel wedding might be £7,324, this cost can be higher or lower depending on many different factors. So, bear these in mind when planning your hotel wedding:
The size and star rating of the hotel – The larger and more luxurious the hotel is, the more they’re likely to charge.
The location – Where the hotel is will influence the cost. For example, London hotels will generally be more expensive than hotels located outside the capital.
The number of guests – Expect to pay more if you have a large guest list.
Season – You’ll pay more during busier seasons, such as during the summer or at Christmas.
Day of the week – Weddings that take place at the weekend are generally more expensive than midweek weddings.
Package – Hotels may offer a range of packages to suit various budgets.
Catering – You’ll pay more if you choose to have premium food and ingredients as part of your menu.
Accommodation – Even with a hotel wedding, relatively few couples pay for their guests’ hotel rooms. If you do choose to offer this, be prepared for your costs to skyrocket.
Music and entertainment – Depending on what type of music and entertainment you go for, such as a DJ or live band, costs can fluctuate wildly.
On top of this, there are also the costs associated with your wedding that the hotel may not be in a position to arrange. This includes your cake, transportation (if needed), flowers, attire, favours and more. It’s important to also bear these in mind when it comes to budgeting your wedding.
There are pros and cons to a hotel wedding, so if you’re still not sure if it’s right for you, consider these before making your decision.
The pros of a hotel wedding
It’s one of the most convenient ways to have a wedding – you probably won’t even need to go outside (except to snap a few shots with the photographer if it’s dry).
The hotel staff will be more than used to delivering top-class service.
Accommodation is right there for you and your guests. They may even offer a discount for you and your new spouse to spend your first night as a married couple in the honeymoon suite (if they don’t, ask for one).
The food at a hotel wedding will be expertly cooked, delicious and fresh.
The cons of a hotel wedding
Some of the more desirable packages might be on the more expensive side.
Certain hotels might not be too happy with you hiring external vendors – especially when it comes to catering and drinks.
If it’s a larger hotel, there may be other, non-wedding party guests staying at the hotel that evening.
Inner city hotels may lack outdoor spaces.
Availability can go quickly, so make sure you secure your booking early.
How to choose the right hotel for your wedding
If you know that you’d love to have a hotel wedding but you’re not quite sure where or how to start looking, there are a few points to consider.
Firstly, is there a particular hotel where you and your partner have already made plenty of great memories? Maybe it’s somewhere you took your first trip together or you spend a long weekends there a couple of times a year? Choosing a hotel you’re familiar with gives you a head start and helps you feel confident about your choice.
If you haven’t stayed there before, why not book a cheeky night to scope the place out, try the food and have a nose into the space they use for weddings? If you like what you see, you can always speak to the manager or events team to get an idea of their rates and packages to see if they fit your budget.
You’ll want to make sure that the hotel can provide you with everything you need, or if not, whether they’re happy for you to hire outside vendors.
As soon as the two of you have decided it’s the perfect venue for your wedding, put your name down and pay the deposit to secure the booking so another couple can’t nab it from you. There’s nothing quite like the disappointment of psyching yourself up for a venue only for you to lose it.

You and your spouse-to-be sit side by side in a beautiful and tasteful setting that’s intimate and cosy. You’re surrounded by your family and friends as you enjoy delicious, freshly-prepared food, then spend the evening dancing to a selection of cheesy tunes… there’s nothing quite like a restaurant wedding. It also has the added benefit of being one of the most affordable ways to tie the knot.
In this post, we’re going to explore how much a restaurant wedding costs, including the average cost, what to expect for your money and why a restaurant wedding might just be the best choice for your big day.
What is a restaurant wedding?
A restaurant wedding is when you have your entire wedding – including the ceremony and proceeding reception – in a restaurant. This can also extend to a pub or a function room within a similar venue.
A restaurant wedding is perfect if you’re looking for a smaller, more intimate way to tie the knot. You can avoid the craziness that sometimes comes with a larger wedding, as well as help to keep costs down.
Restaurateurs are more than familiar with providing customers with a first-class experience. The same can be applied to your wedding. Of course, you’ll hire a registrar and perhaps a celebrant to oversee the ceremony, but the team at the restaurant can take care of the food and service as you celebrate with a post-ceremony meal, which can then become a reception in the evening if there’s space that allows for a dance floor.
With everything you need right there at the restaurant, including great decor, catering, drinks, staff and more, it’s a fantastic option for budget-conscious couples whothat want to have an intimate yet beautiful wedding.
What’s the average cost of a restaurant wedding?
In the UK, the average cost of a restaurant wedding is £5,526, which makes it the third cheapest type of wedding venue you could have after a registry office wedding and a church wedding.
A restaurant wedding is brilliant for couples looking for a more budget-friendly option for their big day. The average cost of a wedding venue in the UK is £9,877, and a restaurant wedding costs almost 45% less than this amount. It’s worth noting that this amount covers only the cost of the venue and the food, which means you’ll still have to budget for your attire, transport, rings and everything else to do with your wedding. It’s also important that you discuss this with the restaurant manager to make sure you don’t have any unwelcome surprises, such as there being a minimum spend on drinks.
Because of their capacity, restaurant weddings are generally much smaller than weddings you might host at a hotel, country house or castle. So, rather than inviting 80+ guests, you might have closer to 30 or so. But, this is perfect if you’re looking to keep things smaller and only invite your closest family and friends.
So, if you’re looking to get married but don’t want to spend anything close to the average, why not speak to the manager of your favourite restaurant and see what they can do for you?
Here at Bridebook, we have hundreds of restaurants that are perfect for hosting wonderful restaurant weddings. We also have plenty more information on average wedding costs in our ultimate guide.
Why is a restaurant wedding a brilliant option for your big day?
As we’ve already highlighted, having your wedding at a restaurant is in the top three3 cheapest venues. Whether it’s your local pizza joint, your favourite curry house or the function room in a nearby pub, opting to have a restaurant wedding will likely save you thousands of pounds.
But, as well as the far more affordable cost, there are plenty more reasons why a restaurant wedding might just be the best choice for you:
Provides a familiar, relaxed and intimate setting.
Offers a cosy and welcoming ambience.
It’s unique and charming.
The food will be of the highest quality and in keeping with your chosen venue.
Service will be exemplary.
It’s a convenient and flexible way to have your ceremony, breakfast and reception in one location.
Because it’s a smaller venue, the cost of flowers and other decor will be low.
Lowers the cost of your transportation.
Keeps your guest list small.
Saves you from falling foul of the Great British weather.
What factors can affect the cost of a restaurant wedding?
While the average cost of a restaurant wedding is £5,526, there are certain factors that mean you might pay more or less than this. These include:
The size of the venue – The bigger the restaurant is, the more you’re likely to pay.
The location of the venue – A pub in the middle of the countryside will usually be much more affordable than a high-end restaurant in London.
The season – During busy seasons, such as summer and Christmas, you’ll have to pay more.
The day – Expect to pay more on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
The number of guests – The more guests you invite, the more expensive it will be.
The food – Letting guests order off the regular menu will be more expensive than serving everyone the same set menu.
Customisations – If you’re asking for a lot of customisations, the price will be higher.
Service charge – Ask the restaurant if there will be a service charge included on the final bill.
Minimum drinks spend – Check whether there’s a minimum drinks spend and if you’ll have to make up the difference if this isn’t reached.
Entertainment and music – Whether you choose a DJ or live music, the cost will fluctuate.
There are then the other costs that are associated with a wedding, such as your photographer and/or videographer, transport to the venue, rings, cake, and attire – these can all have varying costs depending on your style, tastes and preferences.
What are the pros and cons of a restaurant wedding?
If you’re seriously considering a restaurant wedding, you may want to weigh up the pros and cons to make sure it provides you with everything you want on your big day.
The pros of a restaurant wedding
The cost is a huge pro. Remember, you may pay less 30% more than two-thirds less than the average cost of a wedding venue in the UK.
The food will be the star of the show, made by experienced chefs whothat cook similar food every day of the week.
The atmosphere will be intimate, with only your closest loved ones there with you. If you’re hosting in a pub, you can always invite more guests in the evening to party at the reception.
Logistically, a restaurant wedding is simple, with everything you could need right there.
The cons of a restaurant wedding
You’ll have to be quite ruthless with your guest list to make sure you’re not too cramped.
Your favourite restaurant might not be the best choice, especially if it doesn’t have an open floor plan.
Depending on the restaurant you choose, there might not be room for a dance floor.
You’ll likely have to choose the sort of cuisine that the restaurant specialises in, though they may have some options that are more in keeping with traditional wedding food.
How to choose the right restaurant for your wedding
The first thing you should do is familiarise yourself with your top contenders. Book a table so you can get a feel for the atmosphere, the service and – most importantly – the food. If you like it, speak to the manager and let them know what you’re considering – they can tell you if it’s something they offer and what they can do to help make your wedding extra special.
We recommend choosing a restaurant that the two of you have a special connection with. Perhaps it’s somewhere you had your first date, or where you got engaged, or where you spent many Saturday nights enjoying a meal and a bottle of wine together.
You’ll also want to think about practicality. Is there space for you to walk down the aisle with your guests watching on? Is there room for all the guests you’d like to invite? If there’s no function space, can the tables be moved to fit a DJ and dance floor? Think about what you’d like for your wedding and whether the restaurant could accommodate everything.

Now that couples in the UK can legally get married outdoors, wedding marquees are growing in popularity. If you dreamed of getting married in the middle of a vineyard or deep within the rolling British countryside, you can!
But, thanks to the great British weather being as volatile and unpredictable as it is, you won’t want to risk a washout in the event it decides to drizzle… or worse.
That’s where a wedding marquee comes in. It’s a fantastic way to add cover and customisation to your wedding. Even if you’re not getting married outside, many couples hire a marquee anyway to add more indoor space to their venue.
If the cost is putting you off of having a marquee at your wedding, then don’t start making alternative plans just yet. In this post, we’re going to take a look at how you can save money on a wedding marquee and what you need to look out for so as not to exceed your budget.
Is it cheaper to hire a marquee for your wedding instead of hiring a venue?
In general, the cost of a marquee can be more affordable than hiring a venue. The average cost of a wedding venue is £9,877 with catering included, and £6,084 without catering. But, if you’re not careful, then the costs involved with a marquee can spiral, which means it might not be any kinder to your budget. Hiring an all-inclusive venue which includes catering can often be the most cost-effective option overall (as just hiring a marquee won’t factor this in).
What is the cheapest type of marquee to hire?
There are a variety of different marquee types you can hire for your wedding, which includes everything from a tipi to a circus tent. Generally, the more premium it is, the more customisable it is, and the more difficult to transport and set up it is, the more expensive it will be to hire.
One of the cheapest types of marquee to hire is a circus-style tent – costs at Bigtopmania start from as low as £100. But, if you’re looking for something a little less niche, a traditional marquee, a clearspan marquee or a pole marquee are among the most affordable. However, the costs will generally start at around £1,500+ for each, depending on the size you need. Of course, the more guests you invite, the larger your marquee will need to be.
Can you save money by buying a marquee rather than hiring?
Large marquees are expensive, so it more than likely won’t save you any money if you decide to buy one, and even cost more. You may be able to buy a marquee for around £500, but it won’t nearly be big enough to host your wedding – in fact, a marquee for that amount will probably fit in your average back garden.
If you’re looking to hire a marquee that will accommodate 100 guests, it’s far more budget-friendly to hire one rather than buy one. Hiring costs will also include setup and takedown fees and you won’t have to worry about where you’re going to store your marquee once your wedding’s over.
Are there additional costs with hiring a marquee?
When compared to hiring a venue, a marquee can initially seem like a far more affordable option. But, it’s important to bear in mind that hire costs don’t include the site rental, power generator, staff, toilet hire, furniture hire or insurance costs. You may also need to hire a second marquee for the catering staff, which can significantly add to your costs.
Do you need marquee insurance?
It may be another additional cost, but you will need to secure marquee insurance in the event something unexpected happens on your big day. Insurance will cover you and your guests, and while it’s yet another thing to pay for, it could potentially save you many thousands. If you have wedding insurance (which we really recommend) then you should check with your insurer if your marquee is included in this cover (as basic cover rarely includes). The good news is that you can add marquee cover as an additional premium… the not-so-good news is that it will cost – usually around £50 on top of what you’re already paying.
5 ways to save money on a wedding marquee
If a marquee is a big part of your wedding plans, then there are ways you can save money. Here are five tips to help you spend less on a wedding marquee so you can have your dream wedding without breaking the back.
1. Hire from a company outside of London
When deciding on a cheap marquee rental company to hire if you’re on a tight budget, try to choose one that isn’t based in London. As with most professional services and vendors, those located in London naturally cost a little (or a lot) more than those found outside the capital. The same applies to hiring a marquee – after all, storing a marquee when it’s not set up takes up a huge amount of space, which is expensive for London businesses. If you can, hire a local company or one that doesn’t call anywhere inside the M25 their home.
2. Avoid peak dates
Just like with any other vendor or service you may hire for your wedding, including your venue and caterers, if your wedding takes place during peak times, it will cost more – sometimes several thousands more. The most popular times to get married are during the summer months and at the weekend, so if you’re thinking about getting married during either (or both) of these then expect to pay more for marquee rental when competition is highest.
If you can, consider getting married during off-peak times, such as during the winter or midweek. Hiring a marquee for a Tuesday wedding in February will be considerably kinder to your budget than a Saturday wedding in August.
3. Make good use of the space
As you’ve no doubt realised, marquees can be pretty huge – especially if you want one that fits 100 guests. However, it’s important to remember that you and your guests won’t be the only bodies inside your marquee. You also have to consider the staff you hire, including where the catering team is going to prepare your food, and if there’s room for a DJ and dance floor.
So, you may need to go one or two sizes bigger to make sure all the relevant vendors have room, too. If not, then be prepared to hire a second, smaller marquee – which could cost you even more.
The good news is, you can get creative with the space to prevent the need for going bigger. For example, during the wedding breakfast, you can put tables on the dance floor which can be quickly moved out of the way before the evening reception. With a little musical chairs action you can get the most out of the space you have, which will save you some money.
4. Make your booking early (or late!)
Hiring a marquee for a wedding is growing in popularity, especially since laws in the UK changed to allow couples to get married wherever they like. As a result, marquee rental companies tend to fill up their availability many months in advance. If you’re keen to hire a marquee, then make sure you secure your booking early – the closer to the date you book, the more expensive it can be (not to mention more difficult to find availability). Plus, if you book really early you might even be able to secure a juicy discount.
Another important tip when making your booking: ensure the price you’re quoted is fixed so it won’t go up at a later date due to inflation or other reasons.
5. Book a package deal
Remember earlier in this article when we mentioned how, on top of the costs involved with hiring your marquee, there were additional costs on top of this? Well, some wedding marquee vendors, such as Capri Marquees, Tailor-made Marquees and Grice Foster event hire, offer package deals that include many of these extras, such as furniture, decor and power. Booking a package will be far more budget-friendly than booking each part from a separate vendor.
That said, make sure you take the time to compare both options to make sure you really are getting the best deal in your specific situation.

Ready to learn how to have a wedding in a forest? Let’s dive in!
What is a forest wedding?
A forest wedding is either a full wedding ceremony and reception in a forest, or simply a wedding reception hosted in a forest. It’s a beautiful and unique way to celebrate your union amongst the sights and sounds of nature.
Forest weddings offer endless possibilities for personalisation and creativity. Whether you’d like delicate, natural-inspired decor or a full-blown alternative wedding or eco-warrior wedding, you’ll have full control with a forest wedding.
⭐Did You Know: If you want to be legally married at your beautiful venue, double-check that the location of the wedding venue is an Approved Premises under the Marriages and Civil Partnerships (Approved Premises) Regulations 2005. If not, you may need to have the ceremony elsewhere and move to the forest for the reception.
How popular are forest weddings?
Forest weddings have become increasingly popular in recent years. Many couples are drawn to the natural beauty, tranquility, and enchanting atmosphere that forests offer as a wedding backdrop.
In fact, according to our 2023 UK Wedding Report, over ¼ of wedding ceremonies took place outside. This includes the nearly one-in-five couples married in 2022 who opted for a “unique location or venue”, such as a boathouse, forest, or scenic loch.
But while outdoor, alternative, and forest weddings are growing in popularity, they certainly won’t feel overdone. The peaceful vibe and privacy of a forest wedding are second to none, and with thoughtful planning, you can create a memorable and enchanting experience for you, your partner and your guests amidst the beauty of nature.
Planning your dream forest wedding
Let’s check out some of the key steps you need to take and elements to consider when planning your forest wedding:
1. Pick your dream venue
Picking a venue is likely one of the first things you’ll do. It will be the backdrop of all your photographs and determine the size of your wedding. Make sure you visit lots of venues, chat with in-house wedding planners and discuss budgets before committing to a location.
With our wedding venue search tool, you can filter by venue types such as ‘Outdoor’ and styles such as ‘Rustic’ to see exactly what’s out there. This tool will also give you an approximate price, number of bedrooms and how many guests the location can hold. These approximations can help structure the rest of your planning and help you decide where to have an enchanting forest wedding.
Note that it may be difficult for external suppliers to make it to a wedding in a forest. So be prepared to factor in additional transport costs or pay for wedding insurance add-ons in case their stock is damaged.
2. Embrace nature-inspired decor & styling
Wedding decor can include anything from flowers and bouquets to tablescapes and fun photo booths. Incorporate wildflowers, ferns, moss and rustic wooden accents to create a whimsical and organic ambiance.
Twine, dried flowers, moss, burlap and other natural elements from the forest are often free or low-cost and look beautiful. You could also use eco-friendly paper options or consider seed paper that guests can plant afterwards! Leave a little note with the seed paper explaining the symbolic gesture of your growth as a couple and your connection to nature.
The cost of this decor will depend on your vision and how much you’re willing to do yourself. The great thing about forest weddings is that you can often use natural elements like foliage, dried flowers and rustic elements in your decorations. This decor is easy to DIY, and there are tons of tutorials online. Doing it yourself can help reduce costs, while hiring a professional wedding stylist or florist can increase expenses.
To keep costs down even further, you could create your own invitations using dried flowers, cardstock and twine. This will contribute to the rustic theme and add a personal touch to your big day. If the task feels like too much to do on your own or you aren’t very handy, ask a trusted friend (with nice handwriting) to join you in a craft evening. Then, spend some time creating your wedding invites – you’ll be surprised how much fun you have!
3. Don’t forget the essentials
This includes chairs, tables, lighting, sound systems and any necessary permits or license fees. Check with your venue whether they offer a package that includes these essentials to minimise costs.
If they don’t, look out for companies that offer plastic or polished wood furniture. These will be easier to clean and will contribute to the fresh, woodland theme.
4. Craft a woodland-inspired menu
When hosting a forest wedding, try incorporating nature-inspired elements into your food offerings to create a memorable and cohesive experience for your guests.
For example, try hosting a vegan buffet with farm-to-table ingredients. Alternatively, host a barbecue or rent food vans. These interactive catering experiences will contribute to the laid-back environment of a forest wedding and allow guests with different dietary requirements to manage their plate. Plus, you won’t need to print place cards reminding everyone what they ordered!
5. Capture the magical moments
After putting so much work into your big day, capturing the special moments of your forest wedding is essential.
Holding a forest wedding will allow for truly breathtaking wedding photography. With an ample supply of natural light and a beautiful backdrop, your wedding photos will be something to behold. Ask your photographer if they offer:
Wide-angle lenses. To capture as much of the beautiful forest as possible.
An indoor set-up in case of weather changes. Mother nature can be unpredictable, so opt for an experienced photographer who will be prepared for every eventuality.
A candid photoshoot session. Candid moments convey genuine emotions and create a more authentic story of the wedding day.
Retouching at the standard price. Although a forest backdrop makes for beautiful photos, the untameable foliage is likely to produce a few outof-place leaves or twigs. A talented photographer should be able to edit these out using software. However, you should check that this won’t come at extra cost.
🧠Pro Tip: Check out the photographer’s social media accounts as well as their portfolio when considering your options. Often, photographers will include behind-the-scenes information, their editing process and their favourite angles to use on their social media accounts. This will help you understand whether they’re the right fit for your wedding or not.
6. Combine practicality with style
When considering what to wear to a forest wedding, it’s important to consider the landscape. For example, if you live in an area that has a lot of rainfall, you might want to choose a shorter dress to ensure no mud catches on your hems.
If you really want to lean into the floral, boho theme, look for materials that have flower appliques or lace fabrics. In addition, breathable, flowing fabrics will keep you comfortable all day. Oh, and maybe leave the heels at home!
7. Don’t forget the rings
Wedding rings are one of the most important details of your wedding and an investment piece you’ll wear for the rest of your life. Be sure to pick wedding rings you love and ensure someone reliable has them on the big day.
If you’re looking for something bespoke, there are jewellers who can combine natural elements into your wedding bands. For example, sand from a beach, flower petals, or clay from the forest floor. This material is usually sealed in resin to create an unusual contrast with the metal of the ring. Or, consider having hand-crafted wedding bands – we particularly love Eco Wood Rings, lovingly made from sustainably sourced or salvaged wood and recycled precious metals.
How much does a forest wedding cost?
The cost of a forest wedding can vary greatly depending on several factors. This includes your location, head count, wedding attire, the decor and your personal preferences.
Did you know that the average cost of a wedding in 2023 is £19,184, or £24,069 including the rings honeymoon? Average wedding spending has increased in almost every category since 2021!
If that figure makes your eyes water, the good news about a forest wedding is that a lot of the decor and styling is DIY-friendly. It’s easy to make a forest wedding either budget-friendly or extravagant. It totally depends on your preference and priorities.
Top tips for planning your forest wedding
Here are our top tips to help you plan your forest wedding:
Location, location, location: Research and visit potential forest venues to find the perfect location for your wedding. Although aesthetic appeal is important, consider factors such as accessibility, capacity and available facilities. Look for a venue that aligns with your vision and offers the necessary amenities for your wedding day. In addition, ensure that there is an accessible route for caterers, entertainers and other suppliers to help with set-up. A solid track leading into the forest can make all the difference for small wheels and big carts!
Consider the weather: If you opt for a forest wedding, the weather will make a big difference. Try to steer clear of cold and rainy seasons. However, if this can’t be avoided, cover all bases and rent a marquee to protect your guests from a potential downpour.
Dress to impress: You want to look your best on your special day. Unfortunately, looking your best can come at a price. The cost of your wedding outfit will include the price of a dress, shoes, veil, hair and makeup. For budget-conscious or eco-friendly couples, consider renting your wedding attire. This will reduce costs significantly and ensure your dress isn’t single-use.
Consider the lighting: Although a forest wedding will have ample natural lighting, that beautiful sun won’t last all day! If you intend to party into the wee hours to celebrate your love, consider adorning the trees with some lanterns or fairy lights to tie in with the whimsical theme.
The bottom line on planning a forest wedding
Although it might feel overwhelming at first, planning a wedding is one of the most exciting times of your life, and planning a forest wedding is an opportunity to create a particularly magical and unforgettable celebration.
There may be a lot of logistical concerns when planning a wedding surrounded by nature’s beauty. However, with careful planning and budgeting, you can design a one-of-a-kind experience for your and your guests.
Embrace the magic, infuse your personal touch and plan ahead to ensure a truly enchanting celebration that will be cherished for a lifetime.

If you’re not interested in a large wedding or have a smaller budget, a registry office wedding is a great option for your big day. You may not want a lavish ceremony where you get married in front of a hundred people – you may prefer a more intimate wedding attended only by those closest to you. There is no right or wrong approach – only what’s right for you.
In the UK, the average cost of a wedding has risen to £20,775. For many couples, spending that amount on a wedding isn’t possible, and seeking affordable alternatives to expensive venues is just one way to cut this figure in two.
In this post, we’re going to explore everything to do with the cost of a registry office wedding, including the average amount couples pay, the factors that can affect that cost, and why couples choose to get married at a registry office.
What’s the average cost of a registry office wedding?
According to our data, the average amount spent by couples getting married at a registry office is £1,342. It’s also important to remember that this figure is an average, and it can be cheaper still to get married in a registry office – much cheaper.
Many registry offices offer a basic ceremony rate, which includes hiring the room, for as low as £57. However, this basic figure can vary depending on where you’re based and the, as the cost is set by the local council. This also doesn’t include the cost of a ceremony room (which is different from a registry office) which can cost around £200.
It’s important to remember that this isn’t the only fee you’ll pay. As well as the cost of the room, you’ll also need to pay for each of you to give notice (from £35 per person) and any additional marriage certificates (around £10). There may also be administration and postage fees, starting from around £10.
Registry office wedding costs can therefore be broken down like this:
Overall average registry office wedding cost – £1,342
Basic UK registry office ceremony rate – as low as £57
Cost of ceremony room – £200
Cost to give notice – from £35 per person
Marriage certificates – around £10
Admin and postage fees – starting from around £10
See the infographic below for a full breakdown of registry office costs:
What’s the average cost of registrar fees?
As revealed in our ultimate wedding budget breakdown, fees for a registrar to attend a civil marriage venue (for example, a town hall, or a hotel) cost an average of £300 in the UK. This cost can also vary depending on the day of the week. Expect to pay higher fees on weekends and bank holidays. By contrast, weekdays during office hours are generally the most affordable option.
Monday to Friday (office hours) – £300-400
Monday to Friday (outside of office hours) – £400-£450
Saturday – £500
Sunday – £550
Bank Holiday – £525
Special Days (for example, Valentine’s Day, Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve, New Year Day) – £600-£650
Is it cheaper to get married at a registry office?
With the average cost being £1,342, a registry office wedding is by far the cheapest venue option for couples, coming in at 75% cheaper than getting married in a place of worship, 82% cheaper than a hotel and 89% cheaper than a castle. This figure does include the cost of the registrar, which as stated above, costs an average of £300. This is also the most important cost to be aware of, because without a registrar you can’t have a legally binding marriage!
As we’ve already highlighted, the average overall cost for a wedding is £19,184. With the average cost of a venue being a huge chunk of that cost (almost half in fact), getting married in a registry office can make a wedding far more possible for many couples. Plus, some couples simply don’t want a large wedding and are much happier to save some money by hosting an intimate ceremony with their closest family and friends.
What factors can affect the cost of a registry office wedding?
While the cost of getting married in a registry office is, on average, the cheapest type of venue throughout the UK, there are factors that can affect the cost.
Location – Depending on where you’re getting married, some registry offices can be more expensive than others, as the cost is set by the local council.
Time and day – It can be more expensive to get married during more popular dates and times, such as on Saturday afternoons.
Season – During peak seasons, such as the spring and summer, the price may be higher.
Guests – A registry office will have a limited capacity and there may be an additional charge if you want a larger number of guests.
Additional services – Additional music and decorations (if allowed) may affect the cost.
There are also the costs associated with a wedding at any other venue, such as if you’re hiring a photographer or videographer.
Do you have to pay a deposit when booking a registry office wedding?
Some registry offices will ask for a non-refundable deposit to secure the date and time of your wedding. This is usually around £50, but can vary.
Are there any fees if you need to cancel or reschedule?
As well as losing your deposit, you may be charged a fee if you cancel your wedding (particularly if you cancel last minute) and there may be admin charges to rebook.
How long does it take to get married at a registry office?
A registry office wedding is perfect for couples who don’t want a long ceremony or the attention that comes with getting married at larger venues. The ceremony itself will take around 20 – 30 minutes, and you’ll need to arrive around half an hour to an hour early, so you can be interviewed before the ceremony takes place. This means that several marriages can take place at the same registry office on any given day.
Why might you choose to get married at a registry office?
Whether you’ve been married before, have a tighter budget, or simply don’t want the fuss that comes with a larger wedding, there can be many reasons why getting married at a registry office is the right choice for you.
As our data shows, a registry office wedding is a much more affordable option. Just because it’s cheaper it doesn’t mean it isn’t beautiful – far from it. Even a more intimate wedding can still be beautiful and highly personal – it’s just far kinder on your budget.
Once your registry office wedding has finished and the two of you are married, it’s up to you what you do to celebrate. Depending on what you choose, costs will obviously vary greatly – an intimate meal with family and friends will be far more budget-friendly than hiring a venue and hosting a party.
At Bridebook, we can help you plan everything to do with your wedding, from the venue to the stationery. And if you’re looking for a budget-friendly option for your post-registry office wedding celebrations, we’ve got plenty of brilliant restaurant wedding venues you can choose from.
Childhood memories are precious, and often hold a special place in our hearts. What if you could relive those cherished moments on your wedding day? A themed wedding inspired by your childhood can transport you and your guests back in time, creating a magical and unforgettable experience. Get inspired by Mel and Andy’s whimsical Alice in Wonderland themed wedding, complete with quirky DIY touches and a host of unique, interactive activities.
The Inspiration & Wedding Planning
Since I was a kid, I have been obsessed with Alice in Wonderland. I have about 20-25 copies of the book, two Alice in Wonderland tattoos, and always wanted an Alice in Wonderland wedding!
Thankfully, my husband was happy to let me have my dream wedding – he went with all my crazy ideas and helped make everything. Our wedding ceremony was a White Rabbit theme; our wedding breakfast was a Mad Hatter’s tea party; and our evening party was a Red Queen theme.
The Venue
Our venue was Nunsmere Hall in Northwich, Cheshire, and we picked it because it was a gorgeous country house which we felt fit the theme.
My husband and I set up everything in the wedding breakfast the night before and it took hours! My mum and I then stayed over at Nunsmere Hall Hotel the night before together.
Our wedding coordinator was Erin at Nunsmere Hall, and she was the best ever! She saw our vision and was as excited as we were. We have her Hufflepuff flowers on the wedding day as a thank you (made my friend Amee at A Thousand Years Bouquets). We also gave my mum, my mother-in-law and hairdresser Alice in Wonderland flowers, and pocket watches to my three dads.
Our wedding decorator was Marie at Butterfly Events (who work with Nunsmere Hall), and our DJ was from Hipswing (who also work with Nunsmere Hall).
The Decor
We wanted our wedding to be created by ourselves. I was the painter, Andy was the craftsman. I painted six giant paintings from the original Tenniel drawings in the original book, while Andy crafted a this way/that way sign, which I then painted, as well as stands for my paintings and signs, and our own photo memory board. We made all of our own themed invites and table names too.
We collected tea cups, tea pots, plates etc. for our table decorations. It took two years to collect enough items to make our wonky table decorations, which were covered in card and flowers and keys. Most of our decorations came from charity shops. Our centerpieces for the wedding breakfast were all homemade, and took us about nine months to complete in little stages.
Dress, Accessories & Bridal Bouquet
I originally wanted a blue wedding dress, but couldn’t find one I liked or that was in my budget! So I had my bridesmaids in blue tea dresses instead.
My bouquet was handmade by my friend Amee at A Thousand Years Bouquets (she can be found on Facebook). They are made of an old copy of Alice in Wonderland and blue card. She is amazing!
My wedding shoes were Alice in Wonderland converse-style, which I bought from ShoeArtCottage on Etsy. I also had Alice in Wonderland socks, which were a gift.
I had my nails done by Karen at Shanti Beauty in Crewe, Cheshire. They were French nails, but my ring fingers were blue with bows on them. Andy bought me stopwatch earrings for the day, and I bought him his cufflinks. I had his tie and pocket square made from blue Alice in Wonderland fabric by my friend Stewart. My bracelet and necklace were from Pandora, and featured all of the Alice in Wonderland collection, which my mum and stepdad had bought me as gifts on the day.
The Activities
My hen do was at the Rabbit Hole Team Room in Stoke. It was an Alice in Wonderland afternoon tea that my best friend and chief bridesmaid Vickie arranged.
Two of my dads walked me down the aisle, and Andy wrote the best speech and had everyone laughing. He wrote me a poem in his speech, too, and it was just beautiful.
We had a chessboard dance floor and provided games like Jenga, and cards for the evening party. We made our own photo booth frame, which we used our own camera for, with props to go with it.
We had a sweet table with “Eat Me” jars on it, which my two dads arranged for us. Our wedding favours were little shots of gin in “Drink Me” bottles, and “Eat Me” cookies shaped like mushrooms.
Dreaming of planning your own childhood-inspired themed wedding? Then take a leaf out of Mel and Andy’s book, and start putting together your own unique ideas – the possibilities are endless!
Themed weddings are becoming increasingly popular, and for good reason. From fairytale castles to rustic barns, the possibilities are endless. But how to plan a themed wedding that’s both creative and personal, yet tasteful and classy? Check out Joanne and Luke’s fabulous Lord of the Rings themed wedding – the perfect combination of intricate planning and thoughtful DIY touches.
The Inspiration & Wedding Planning
Luke and I are both self-styled Mega Geeks. We love everything fantasy and our home is filled with memorabilia, figurines and books etc. We met at London Film & Comic Con, where I was dressed in a costume she had made as Daenerys from Game of Thrones. For our wedding we needed to find a theme that suited both the venue and was a passion for both of us in equal measure.
We tried to infuse our themes throughout the wedding without being too over-the-top and were absolutely thrilled with the result, which we felt really reflected us and our passions. Lots of guests commented that the days was very “us”, which was lovely to hear. everyone had a wonderful time!
The Venue
Had we chosen a castle venue, Game of Thrones was the obvious choice of theme, but when we found Bourton Hall we absolutely fell in love and no other venue then would do!
It did, however, require a theme re-think, and so we picked the obvious (to us): Lord of the Rings! A lifelong obsession for both of us – both the books and the wonderful movie trilogy, as well as The Hobbit – it was a theme we could both throw ourselves in to fully! We felt it lent beautifully to the gorgeous wood panelling and natural feel of the venue and lent to decorating with wonderful greenery, white, natural flowers and wooden accessories.
The Decor
Luckily, Luke is an artist (check out his beautiful creations here), which meant we could design so much of our stationery ourselves (and saved a fortune in the process!).
He created our invitation suite entirely from scratch using the fonts and styles of the Lord of the Rings, and even wood-burned our table names himself, all places from the world of Tolkien.
Our top table was Rivendell, complete with a golden dragon to keep an eye on us. We couldn’t find an actual Smaug, so Viserion from Game of Thrones did a wonderful job of filling in for him!
Luke also created an amazing table plan, fitting in with the maps of Middle Earth (Rivendell, Erebor, Hobbiton, Mordor, Lothlorien and so on), which everyone commented on!
We decorated the lounge tables with piles of old books rather than flowers to give the area a cosy, “Hobbity” theme, and hidden around the beautiful floristry were some little hanging Hobbit holes.
We created some guest bags to go in the rooms of our guests that stayed overnight, and made labels for items with relevant quotes from the books to decorate. And finally, we had a photo booth in the evening, for which we collected various Lord of the Rings related props and costumes which leant to some wonderfully funny moments in the evening!
The Accessories
I had ordered a replica of Galadriel’s Nenya ring to wear on the day, which came in a beautiful wooden carved box. I also contacted Weta Workshop (who created all the props, costumes, and pretty much everything for the films), and they very kindly sent a second ring box – which we were completely blown away by – so that both the bride and groom’s rings could be kept in style!
Some little finishing touches were Luke’s cufflinks, handmade little wooden Hobbit holes which were a Father’s Day gift from Charlie, who also had a Leaf of Lorien brooch on his little suit.
The Music
We created playlists including music from all of our favourite films and TV shows.
Whilst waiting for the bride to arrive, there were some Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings musical pieces, and during the wedding breakfast we had created a playlist using acoustic versions of various themes, including Harry Potter, Star Wars and even Pokémon!
If you’re looking for a wedding that’s personal to you and your partner, why not have a fantasy-themed wedding of your own? With careful thought and plenty of research, you can – like Joanne and Luke – incorporate your favourite elements in a manner that’s both creative yet tasteful.
