From brides and bridesmaids arriving in helicopters to a carousel in the garden, to roaming bands to the perfect sparkler shots on our beautiful Cathedral Terrace.

Our weddings at the farm are so personal. It is of the utmost importance to us that our couples get to choose and decide on every aspect of their wedding, rather than being presented with package deals. Reception spaces

Photo © Will Fuller Photography | See Oak Barn’s Bridebook profile

Oak Barn boasts four versatile reception spaces within the sustainable farm:

The Oak Barn

A stunning Grade II listed threshing barn stands as the estate’s centrepiece, and is a popular option for large weddings. Its gorgeous high-vaulted roof, exposed beams and floor-to-ceiling glass doors accommodate up to 135 guests for ceremonies, 135 for formal dining, and 200 for evening receptions. Hidden in the fabric of the building is a high-tech light and sound system, and it’s perfect in all seasons due to the air conditioning system, underfloor heating and wood burner.

The Byre

The Byre is an adaptable space with floor-to-ceiling glass doors that bathe the interior in beautiful natural light and flow onto the terrace and into the charming sheep field. This elegant location accommodates 100 guests for ceremonies, 60 for formal dining, and 100 for relaxed evening receptions.

Pole Barn

Steeped in rustic charm, this large open-fronted barn and wood store is stripped back and more understated in style, but also decked in pretty fairy and festoon lights, and is home to a fabulous 1956 Fordson Major tractor. Retaining the character of its humble origins, it is the venue’s most versatile events space, providing the perfect backdrop for a laid-back ceremony and drinks reception, as well as joyous garden games and romantic couples’ portraits.

The Byre’s Terrace

This is a magnificent option for an outdoor wedding ceremony, offering the perfect place to exchange vows and relax with loved ones, gaze at the glorious sunset over the Kent countryside and the lily pond, and tune in to nature.

Onsite accommodation

Unlike many other barn venues, Weaver’s Cottages offers luxurious onsite accommodation where couples can relish a few extra days with their loved ones. Staying at the farm will ensure the perfect start to your wedding celebrations. You’ll have plenty of time to settle in, unwind, and really make the most of the magical setting, surrounded by your closest friends and family members.

Meet the venue’s owners

Deana was introduced to weddings when she started working in hotels in Asia, and loved everything about them. In her own words:

“When Tim and I first saw Frame Farm we fell in love with it and knew that it could be transformed into a breathtaking venue surrounded by sheep fields, for couples to create a bespoke wedding that would reflect them as a couple. It took a three and a half years’ renovation project to give the farm a new lease of life. We watched our ideas turn into a beautiful reality. Our vision was to create a venue where our couples could curate a dream day or multi-day wedding, within an eco and sustainable environment. Then on 2 February 2019, whilst the sun glistened on the snow, we hosted our first wedding.”

Deana continues: “It is a joy coming to work each day and the satisfaction is immense. We love seeing all our couples’ plans and styling come together on their wedding day, and witnessing the pure love and joy as our couples celebrate one of the most amazing occasions of their life with their friends and family. It always makes my heart swell! So many of our couples stay in touch, eagerly share their wedding photos and videos with us, and come back to stay for their anniversary, or return for their children’s naming ceremonies – which means so much to us. We pride ourselves on building the most caring relationships with our brides and grooms, who ultimately put their trust in us.”

Memorable moments

Photo © Will Fuller Photography | See Oak Barn’s Bridebook profile

We asked Deana and Tim to share their most memorable wedding to date, and any particularly unusual or fun experiences. They share:

“Each wedding at the farm is so unique that it is so very hard to choose, and this is what makes Oak Barn, Frame Farm, so special. We do love seeing what transport our couples will arrive in – from classic buses and cars to a truck cab and sports cars. We must admit that witnessing couples landing by helicopter in the field next to The Byre’s terrace for their Grand Entrance into their ceremony, has certainly been unforgettable, both for ourselves and their wedding guests.”

Having the farm turned into an “English Fayre” with Morris dancers in the Pole Barn, and archery, axe throwing and wild bird displays in the fields was also a particularly memorable moment for the owners.

They also revealed that The Pole Barn is the most versatile space where couples can go wild with some incredibly fun ideas. These include:

  • Mini golf circuits
  • Pin ball machines
  • Pool/air hockey tables
  • Chill-out areas with bars
  • Skittles competitions
  • Morris dancers
  • Vintage games
  • Photo booths

In the field adjacent to The Byre’s terrace where reception drinks can be hosted, the owners also have reports of some amazing…

  • Wild bird displays
  • Giant chess games
  • Axe throwing
  • Archery contests
  • Croquet

Evie Arlott: The Wed Shed Decor & The Old Mill (Aldermaston)

Photo © Evie Arlott | Visit The Wed Shed & The Old Mill (Aldermaston)

For Evie Arlott, the wedding industry isn’t just a profession; it’s a family legacy deeply rooted in tradition and passion. As the fourth generation overseeing The Old Mill, Aldermaston, a venue steeped in history and hospitality, Evie’s journey into the world of weddings was both personal and life-affirming. “Witnessing the legacy of hospitality and celebration at the mill,” she reflects, “fuelled my desire to continue this legacy.”

In 2019, Evie embarked on a new chapter, establishing The Wed Shed, a wedding decor company aimed at transforming dream wedding settings into reality. With a keen eye for design and a dedication to preserving her family’s heritage, Evie found joy in curating luxurious wedding spaces that reflect her personal touch and attention to detail.

Her proudest achievement lies in the successful expansion of The Wed Shed beyond The Old Mill venue. Having adorned over 300 weddings with their creations, Evie and her team have not only enhanced the venue’s appeal but also contributed to its enduring legacy. “Reaching the 90-year mark for The Old Mill,” she shares, “is a testament to our unwavering commitment to excellence and tradition.”

In a competitive industry where vendors vie for attention, Evie finds inspiration in the increasing presence of women in key roles. “The empowerment of women in this field,” she observes, “has paved the way for greater diversity and creativity.”

For aspiring entrepreneurs, Evie emphasises the importance of setting clear objectives and maintaining a positive mindset. “Obstacles are just temporary challenges,” she asserts, “and opportunities for growth.”

Beyond her entrepreneurial endeavours, Evie finds balance and inspiration as part of the Virgin Atlantic Cabin Crew, enthusing that “travelling enables us to spend quality time together.”

Embracing diversity is at the core of Evie’s business ethos. Her brother’s upcoming wedding, marrying his long-term boyfriend, underscores their commitment to inclusivity. “We embrace diversity within our team,” Evie explains, “and aim to provide a more diverse range of options for our clients.”

In Evie Arlott, the wedding industry finds a visionary leader dedicated to preserving tradition, fostering creativity and championing inclusivity. Through her endeavours, she not only creates timeless wedding experiences but also shapes a more diverse and vibrant industry landscape.

Phoebe Stanaway: Elisabeth Shell Events, Bespoke Wedding Planning

Photo © Elisabeth Shell Events | See their Bridebook profile

Phoebe Stanaway’s journey into the world of wedding planning began with a desire for freedom – the freedom to work on her own terms, from wherever she pleased, and to pursue a career that brought her joy. Reflecting on her decision to found Elisabeth Shell Events, she shares, “I decided to start my own business to give myself the three big freedoms: time, financial and location.”

An innate people person, Phoebe thrives in the fast-paced, dynamic environment of wedding planning. With a background in hospitality, including managing a cocktail bar in the heart of the city and running restaurants in London, she found her true calling in orchestrating weddings. “Not one day is ever the same in my life and I love it,” she exclaims. “A wedding really does tick all my boxes and flexes the muscles I have of things I’m really good at!”

With over 400 weddings under her belt and a string of accolades to her name, including being a Regional Finalist for The Wedding Industry Awards 2023 and Highly Commended in 2022, Phoebe’s expertise is undeniable. Yet, she remains grounded, recognising the challenges that come with balancing work and personal life. “Balancing demanding work schedules with personal life can be challenging,” she admits. “It’s also very difficult to keep boundaries in place with clients sometimes, especially without coming across as too assertive as a woman.”

Despite the challenges, Phoebe finds motivation in the sheer enjoyment she derives from her work. “I’m fun, I’m friendly. I get stuck in,” she declares. Her job has seen her in some extraordinary situations, from securing a marquee in headland winds to running pizzas through a snowstorm for an entire wedding breakfast. “My job pretty much is overcoming obstacles,” she says. “I just remember to take a deep breath, think creatively and believe that there’s always a solution – I just need to find it.”

Phoebe is passionate about the representation of women in the wedding industry and the diversity of love that it encompasses. She believes that women are leading the way in redefining wedding customs and traditions, shining lights onto the LGBTQ+ scene and highlighting disability awareness. “That also encourages others to step outside the box and look at how they might be able to use a hobby, or love or craft etc around their family commitments, and contribute to such a vibrant industry,” she remarks.

Amidst the hustle and bustle of wedding planning, Phoebe emphasises the importance of self-care and wellness. “I’ve burnt out before,” she admits. “If no one is going to die, I can have a day off. Nothing is that dramatic. I just need to remind myself of that, often.”

As Elisabeth Shell Events continues to evolve, Phoebe is committed to inclusivity and representation. While acknowledging that there is room for improvement, she is proactive in her efforts to create a more inclusive environment. “I absolutely am committed to doing my best to do better!” she affirms.

Phoebe’s journey in the wedding industry is a testament to her resilience, creativity, and unwavering commitment to her values. As she looks towards the future, she remains steadfast in her pursuit of excellence and inclusivity, ensuring that every couple she works with feels seen, heard and celebrated.

Reflecting on those early days, she reminisces, “I still fondly remember my trips to Hong Kong at the very beginning and the incredible stones that surrounded me; carved, engraved, whittled into miniature sculptures, cut to enhance their natural flaws… I felt like a kid in a sweet shop.”

However, it was during these travels that she also confronted the darker realities of the trade. She recalls, “I bore witness to the dark side of the jewellery trade; the cheap prices, the offices filled to the brim with stacks upon stacks of farmed freshwater pearls, the child labour, the gemstones with murky histories circulating the market.” This experience sparked a deep commitment to ethical practices within the industry.

Armed with a passion for design and a commitment to ethics, Ruby pursued a Master’s degree in Design at Central Saint Martin’s, focusing her studies on the ethical implications within the jewellery industry. She shares, “When I met a Hatton Garden diamond dealer who told me nonchalantly, ‘When you work in this trade you sell your soul to the devil,’ I knew then that it didn’t need to be that way.”

Driven by a desire to challenge the status quo, Ruby founded Lebrusan Studio, a brand dedicated to sustainable luxury. “I didn’t set out to become a bridal jeweller,” she explains, “but I quickly recognised that engagement rings, wedding bands and commitment rings are some of the most meaningful jewels people will ever own.”

Over the past 12 years, Ruby’s impact has been profound. From championing Fairtrade Gold to delivering a TEDx talk on ethical jewellery, she has consistently pushed boundaries and garnered recognition for her efforts. Reflecting on her journey, she expresses, “I feel incredibly proud to reflect on all the ways my little homespun lifestyle brand has created a wave in the jewellery industry.”

Yet, amidst the accolades and achievements, Ruby remains focused on her mission to create meaningful, sustainable jewellery that resonates with her customers. “It’s crucial that jewels with such significance tell stories their wearers can feel proud of,” she insists.

Reflecting on the gender dynamics within the industry, Ruby highlights the importance of fostering a culture of compassion and collaboration. “Gender equality can only be achieved if we shape our industries around compassion and nurturing, sharing knowledge and supporting other women,” she asserts.

In the face of growing consumer demand for sustainability, Ruby acknowledges the need for greater transparency and education within the industry. She emphasises, “One of the biggest challenges we’re currently facing is the need to educate consumers; to equip them with the knowledge they need to navigate a heavily greenwashed market.”

For Ruby, inspiration comes not only from the exquisite craftsmanship of her colleagues but also from the diverse voices and perspectives that shape the wedding industry. “We are all valuable assets in a sturdy, interwoven net that uplifts me every day,” she reflects.

Ruby recognises the profound influence of the wedding industry, particularly on young girls. She remarks, “For so many little girls, the wedding realm is a source of aspiration, awe and inspiration from a young age; its influence on these impressionable brains is not to be underestimated.” She believes that seeing diverse representations in the industry is crucial for fostering feelings of self-worth and empowerment.

As she continues to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of the jewellery industry, Ruby remains committed to authenticity and innovation. Her advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is simple yet profound: “It’s crucial that you are authentic and unique… Once you’ve found what makes you unparalleled and you believe in it, you are unstoppable.”

In her quest for inclusivity, Ruby and Lebrusan Studio have actively worked to amplify LGBTQ+ voices within the bridal jewellery space. She shares, “We’re aware that LGBTQ+ visibility is insufficient within the bridal jewellery industry so we strive actively for better inclusivity within our own business.” From gender-neutral love rings to dedicated resources for LGBTQ+ couples, Ruby’s commitment to diversity and representation shines through in every facet of her business.

Kerri O’Brien: Francis + Louise, Contemporary Luxury Accessories

Photo © Francis + Louise | See their Bridebook profile

Celebrating its sixth year in operation, Francis + Louise is more than just a business for Kerri O’Brien; it’s a passion project born out of a love for design and a desire to create something truly unique. With a background in print design for the fashion industry, including collaborations with renowned brands like Calvin Klein and Anthropologie, Kerri transitioned into the world of weddings after designing her own bespoke print for her wedding. “Our wedding was featured on the wedding blog Love My Dress,” she recalls, “and from there, I got my first international order.”

From those humble beginnings, Francis + Louise has grown into a thriving venture, offering both ready-to-wear collections and bespoke print design services. What sets Kerri’s brand apart is not just its aesthetic appeal but also its commitment to sustainability and traceability. “I’m really proud that all my products are made, designed and printed in the UK,” she explains. “The traceability and sustainability of my products are something really important to me and are clearly important to my customers too.”

As a woman navigating the wedding industry, Kerri has found support and camaraderie among her peers. “Everyone is really supportive,” she says, “and I have made lots of amazing friends and been able to collaborate with other business owners, many of them female founders.”

However, running a business single-handedly comes with its challenges, especially when juggling multiple responsibilities. “When you are managing all aspects of your business… it is impossible to not feel clouded, confused and overwhelmed at times,” Kerri admits. Yet, she finds solace in yoga, meditation, and connecting with fellow creatives. “Sometimes just talking to someone else in the same boat makes it so much better and problems are solved quicker,” she adds.

Kerri is deeply committed to challenging the entrenched gender roles that dominate the wedding industry. She reflects on the prevalent portrayal of women in traditional roles in films, literature and magazines, where brides are often depicted as being “given away” by their fathers and where virginal white remains the norm for wedding dresses. This pervasive imagery influences couples’ choices for their own weddings, perpetuating a narrow definition of what a wedding should look like.

However, Kerri sees her products as a refreshing departure from these conventions. “I love that my products often bring a strong influence of colour into a ceremony,” she says. Through her bespoke print designs, she offers couples the opportunity to break away from tradition and express their unique personalities and styles. Kerri finds that her design service particularly resonates with couples seeking a less traditional approach to their special day.

Attending events like the Un-Wedding Show, which celebrates modern and independent wedding suppliers, Kerri recognises the growing demand for alternative wedding experiences. Yet, she acknowledges that there is still a lack of representation of less-traditional female roles within the industry as a whole. By actively promoting inclusivity and diversity through her work, Kerri hopes to inspire a shift towards more progressive and inclusive weddings.

Despite the challenges, Kerri remains grateful for the opportunity to pursue her passion while balancing work and family life. “I feel very grateful I get to do something I love every day and am able to work it around my kids,” she says.

Looking ahead, Kerri is committed to empowering other women in business and encouraging them to value their worth. “I would encourage all female business owners to be more bold with their prices from the start,” she advises. “Price your worth and wealth of experience.”

Through her dedication to craftsmanship and inclusivity, Kerri O’Brien is not just creating beautiful prints; she’s crafting memories that will last a lifetime for couples around the world.

For Holly Miller, the allure of entrepreneurship lies in the freedom it offers – the flexibility to balance her thriving cake business with the joys of motherhood. “Running my own business enables me to be at home with my children when they need me,” she shares, relishing the autonomy of setting her own rules in the ever-evolving wedding industry.

Her passion for crafting exquisite confections has earned her prestigious accolades, including the title of TWIA National Wedding Cake Designer of the Year 2024. “Becoming the best in my field,” Holly reflects, “fuels my obsession to succeed.”

As a woman who is unapologetically outspoken and fiercely independent, Holly occasionally grapples with perceptions of being too forward. “I remind myself,” she asserts, “that I am a strong-minded, badass businesswoman.” For Holly, motivation is innate and intrinsic, stemming from her unwavering dedication to her craft. “My business is like my baby,” she admits, “and I live and breathe it.”

In an industry brimming with creativity, Holly finds inspiration in the success stories of fellow female entrepreneurs. “It truly shows women can do it all,” she declares, celebrating their achievements as key figures in fabulous brands and businesses.

Despite the demands of entrepreneurship, Holly prioritises downtime with her family, recognising the importance of unplugging from work. “Days out, board games, dog walks,” she lists, cherishing moments of respite away from the bustle of business.

Her advice to aspiring entrepreneurs echoes her own journey – resilience, focus and an unwavering work ethic are the ingredients for success. “Just go for it!” she urges, a testament to her own remarkable ascent from baking cakes for her kids’ birthdays to becoming a nationally acclaimed cake designer.

Genevieve Hawks: Queen Bea Photography

For Genevieve Hawks, Queen Bea Photography, venturing into wedding photography stemmed from personal experiences. “I had a lot of negative experiences when planning my own wedding (to another woman),” she shares candidly, reflecting on the lack of diversity she encountered in the industry back in 2018. Determined to carve her own path, Genevieve discovered her passion for photography upon returning from her honeymoon – a decision she has never regretted.

With over 200 weddings under her belt, Genevieve’s journey has been both exhilarating and challenging. “All the misogyny,” she laments, recounting instances of unwarranted questioning and condescension from male wedding guests. Despite the frustrations, Genevieve remains steadfast in her love for photography and her commitment to creating an inclusive space for couples.

In an industry predominantly led by women, Genevieve finds solace in the camaraderie and support of her peers. “It’s a lovely community,” she remarks, highlighting the importance of representation and listening to the diverse voices of brides.

Balancing her passion with the demands of the job, Genevieve acknowledges the sacrifices involved. “I’m often working well into the evenings,” she admits, a testament to her dedication to her craft.

Her advice to aspiring entrepreneurs in the wedding industry is simple yet empowering: “Just believe in yourself and go for it!” Genevieve’s own journey serves as a testament to the power of self-belief and resilience.

As a member of the LGBTQ+ community herself, Genevieve is committed to visibility and inclusivity in her work. “I try to always show a mix of couples,” she explains, emphasising the importance of representation in her marketing and social media presence. Through her lens, Genevieve captures not just moments, but stories of love, resilience and authenticity, ensuring that every couple feels seen and celebrated.

Kate Dyer, co-founder of Kate and Kate Celebrants, has always relished the freedom of doing things her own way and avoiding the need to answer to others. For her, owning a business is more than just a venture – it’s a “calm, happy, safe space” where she finds peace and security.

Reflecting on her entrepreneurial journey, Kate shares her passion for creating bespoke wedding ceremonies. With fifteen years of experience as a wedding registrar, Kate and her colleague felt compelled to break free from the constraints of the system in 2016 and become Independent Celebrants.

“It was a leap of faith, driven by our determination to give couples the perfect ceremony to start their special day,” she explains. “We had solid relationships with reputable wedding venues, so we embarked on this journey with confidence.”

Kate’s dedication to delivering exceptional ceremonies has earned her a stellar reputation within the industry. “There’s no greater satisfaction than hearing guests declare it the best wedding ever!” she exclaims. Working independently alongside her best friend allows them the freedom to infuse each ceremony with creativity and flair.

“While the creative aspect of our work flourished, navigating the business side presented challenges,” Kate admits. “Business acumen wasn’t our forte, but with free advice and a steep learning curve, we honed our skills in areas like cash-flow forecasting, marketing and SEO.”

Having a supportive partner by her side has been instrumental in overcoming obstacles, especially during the uncertainties brought about by the pandemic. “Our differences complement each other, and knowing we have each other’s backs keeps us resilient in the face of adversity,” she shares.

Kate emphasises the importance of female representation in the UK wedding industry. “By empowering women, the industry becomes more inclusive, diverse and empowering for all involved,” she notes.

Maintaining work-life balance is an ongoing challenge for Kate. “Setting boundaries, staying organised and effective time management are essential,” she explains. “Despite occasional mishaps, like forgetting to pick up my daughter from college, I strive to keep all the plates spinning while acknowledging my limitations.”

For aspiring entrepreneurs, Kate offers this advice: “Seek as much free advice as possible, understand that building a business takes time, and find your tribe of like-minded colleagues for support and camaraderie. Embrace the journey and enjoy the ride!”

“At Kate and Kate Celebrants, love knows no bounds,” Kate concludes. “We celebrate diversity and inclusivity by offering a wide range of options to accommodate different cultures, backgrounds and preferences, ensuring every couple feels valued and respected on their wedding planning journey.”

Louise Quenby: Jackstar Weddings, Wedding DJ Services

For Louise Quenby, at Jackstar Weddings, the journey into entrepreneurship began with a shared passion for creating unforgettable wedding experiences. “Running my own business was something that I had thought about a lot,” she recalls, reflecting on her aspirations from college days. Together with her husband, Jack, whose background as a DJ ignited their path, they ventured into the world of weddings, starting with a white LED dance floor purchase in 2012. As they delved deeper into the wedding scene, attending their first wedding fair marked a significant turning point, propelling their business forward.

Louise’s journey continues to be one of remarkable achievements and ongoing growth. “There are so many [highlights], but the most recent,” she beams, “is that after winning The Wedding Industry Awards for 4 years in a row, I am now a judge. And to add to that, the ONLY female judge on the DJ panel.” Her accolades speak volumes about her expertise and dedication to her craft.

However, Louise acknowledges the challenges that come with balancing a demanding career with motherhood. “My challenge doesn’t link to working within the wedding industry, just working in general,” she reflects. Yet, she remains resilient, constantly striving to find the equilibrium between her professional and personal life.

Setting goals has been instrumental in Louise’s journey. “Each year I sit down and set new goals,” she shares. These goals serve as a guiding light, reminding her of the purpose behind her endeavours and motivating her to push through the tough times.

Despite being a thriving industry, Louise feels that wedding professionals often don’t receive the recognition they deserve. “I feel that the wedding industry is heavily represented in the wedding industry,” she notes wryly, highlighting the misconception that their work is merely a hobby rather than a profession.

For Louise, achieving balance means prioritising time with her family. “For me now though I ensure I take one day off during the week and try to have at least one day off at the weekend,” she explains. Her commitment to spending quality time with her children is unwavering, evident in the deliberate scheduling of holidays and breaks throughout the year.

Her advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is simple yet profound: “Write down your dream.” Louise attributes much of her success to this practice, emphasising the importance of turning dreams into tangible goals and taking proactive steps towards realising them.

In her work with couples, Louise embraces diversity and inclusivity. “We have worked with same-sex couples providing their wedding entertainment, along with working with couples from different cultures,” she shares. Celebrating love in all its forms, Louise ensures that each wedding reflects the unique personalities and backgrounds of the couple, creating unforgettable experiences for all involved.

Joanne Dodds: CAVE (Composer, Arranger, Violinist and Educator)

Photo © CAVE | See their Bridebook profile

Joanne Dodds, proud founder of CAVE, was a former Royal Navy Warfare Officer who found her true calling in the world of music. “When I left my job,” she recounts, “I wanted to return to my musical roots and started to compose and arrange music for weddings and special events, making couples’ special days even more unique and memorable.” For Joanne, music isn’t just a profession; it’s a passion that adds depth and emotion to life’s most significant moments.

Transitioning to complete self-employment marked a significant milestone in Joanne’s career. She celebrates “becoming completely self-employed and doing what I absolutely adore!” Her versatility as a violinist knows no bounds, as she effortlessly weaves together melodies ranging from AC/DC to Game of Thrones, Billie Eilish to Elvis, infusing each performance with her unique style and flair.

While the wedding industry may be predominantly female-owned, Joanne’s background in male-dominated workplaces has given her a different perspective. “I have always worked in male-dominated workplaces (Royal Navy, Football…),” she notes. However, as a soloist, gender dynamics take a back seat to her love for music and her commitment to providing exceptional service.

Joanne views her role in the music industry as a privilege, recognising the profound impact music has on people’s lives. “Music is a powerful backdrop to all aspects of life,” she reflects. Her calm demeanour and organisational skills, honed through years of experience, ensure smooth sailing even in the busiest of times.

In her experience, Joanne observes that brides often take the lead in booking musical services for their weddings. However, she’s delighted to see an increasing number of grooms surprising their partners with her performances, adding an extra layer of joy to the occasion.

Despite her hectic schedule, Joanne emphasises the importance of self-care. “It has taken me years to learn to slow down and take time for myself,” she admits. Yet, her genuine love for music fuels her passion, turning what could be just a job into a labour of love.

Her advice to aspiring musicians is straightforward: “Just go for it!” Joanne encourages others to pursue their dreams fearlessly, unencumbered by doubts or the safety net of traditional employment.

For Joanne, every wedding is a unique opportunity to showcase the versatility of the violin. “I like to prove that any genre or style of music can be played on the violin,” she asserts. Her commitment to making each wedding as special and personalised as possible reflects her belief that love knows no bounds when it comes to music.

Check out the efforts of our Sustainability Heroes. These suppliers are going the extra mile to incorporate eco-friendly practices into their businesses to reduce their environmental impact and make your wedding day as sustainable as possible. Read on to learn all about their ethos and approach to sustainability.

Anna | Wilderness Wedding Venue

Why is sustainability important to you as a wedding business?

Sustainability is integral to The Wilderness. My parents have owned the farm for more than 40 years and we have a passion for nature and sustainability. Sustainable practices are in our roots. We want to promote wildlife and conserve all the incredible species we have and the landscape we enjoy.

What are your standout earth-friendly features?

  1. We have been running a re-wilding and re-generation programme in the Stour Valley for more than 25 years to encourage rare breeds of birds.
  2. We ask that all guests are bought to the farm and taken home on a shared bus to minimise vehicle movements to reduce impact on the land.
  3. We have a leave no-trace policy and are extremely sensitive to how we recycle all waste. We do not use single-use plastics and try to use locally sourced ingredients and suppliers.
  4. We have off-grid glamping to minimise our power consumption.
  5. We keep noise in certain areas to a minimum to protect nesting birds.
  6. We are set on a 200-acre peatland marsh, which is very important as it acts as a natural carbon sink, capturing harmful C02 from the atmosphere. We do not use as pesticides or chemicals on the land and the grass can only be at specific times of year, to allow the nesting birds to rear their young and to allow wildflowers to grow (promoting insects and pollination).

Proudest sustainability initiative you’ve undertaken?

We have been protecting the landscape for more than 25 years. We are very proud of our programme and last year saw the return of beavers to the area for the first time.

Greatest sustainability challenge you’ve overcome?

Running events while always ensuring the environment comes first. I.e. minimising our impact by transporting everyone on a large bus and making sure we are extremely sensitive to the landscape. At certain times of year the water meadows are flooded and this is to encourage certain birds to come and breed. This can be a challenge but we work with the seasons and nature comes first.

Top tips for other aspiring green wedding businesses?

Listen and observe and think about the longer term impact. People will embrace it.

What would be your 3 top tips for couples planning a green wedding?

  1. Think about what is really important to you. Instead of receiving a wedding gift, perhaps ask your guests to give some money to a charity to plant trees.
  2. Instead of having a traditional wedding favour, perhaps give your guests some wildflower seeds to plant, or give them something you have bought second-hand.
  3. Think about waste: everything you buy will have a waste implication. Perhaps buy a second-hand wedding dress or upcycle a wedding dress?

Henry | The Out Barn

Why is sustainability important to you as a wedding business?

Sustainability is important for us as it helps to reduce the impact that our actions have on the environment. Weddings can often generate a significant amount of waste and by adopting sustainable practices, wedding businesses can help to minimise their negative impact on the environment and promote social responsibility.

What are your standout earth-friendly features?

  1. Our heating is provided by a sustainable biomass boiler. We have solar panels for our electricity and we have our own bore hole for water. We can at times run fully off-grid!
  2. We have planted over 50,000 trees on the organic farm to provide future biomass energy and undertake tree regeneration, and 1 acre of wildflowers out the front for bees and wildlife.
  3. We take flowers left over from weddings to local care homes to be enjoyed for a few more days.
  4. The barn was built using oak grown from the farm where possible.
  5. All our waste is recycled using MCS Waste Management company that specialises in waste recycling.
  6. All produce is sourced within our local area.

Proudest sustainability initiative you’ve undertaken?

We are most proud of delivering the leftover flowers to care homes!

Greatest sustainability challenge you’ve overcome?

Retro-fitting a biomass boiler!

Ebony | Cheshire Woodland Weddings

Why is sustainability important to you as a wedding business?

As a woodland venue, sustainability is one of the most important things we think about when organising our weddings. We have a few ways we keep things green and lower our carbon footprint. From using only Biodegradable confetti, using local suppliers, to having reusable venue dressing included!

What are your standout earth-friendly features?

Some of our standout earth-friendly features include: using only biodegradable confetti; using local supplier lists; decoration from our woodland; sourcing caterers who offer a variety of vegetarian and vegan options; ale from a local brewery; recycling all of our waste; having reusable venue dressing included in our package; and having public transport within walking distance!

Proudest sustainability initiative you’ve undertaken?

That would be using and recycling decorations from our very own woodland!

Greatest sustainability challenge you’ve overcome?

Our firework displays. After trying many, different ways of trying to keep the carbon footprint low, we finally decided to swap them for a laser/light show! Alongside being more sustainable for the planet, the change is a lot kinder and safer for the local wildlife.

Use resources you have to hand, listen to you customer’s feedback, support your local businesses.

What would be your 3 top tips for couples planning a green wedding?

  1. Book local suppliers.
  2. Use biodegradable confetti.
  3. Use sustainable decorations (e.g. using wooden table pieces that people can take home as a memento or making sure that something like your guestbook is able to be used as a decoration in your home rather than stored away, not to be seen until years later!)

Nathalie | Dressarte Paris

Why is sustainability important to you as a wedding business?

At Dressarte we’re committed to reducing the waste caused by the fashion industry by creating custom-made wedding attire from luxurious upcycled, recycled and eco-friendly fabrics. Over the years we built our own supply chain, sourcing luxurious surplus fabrics directly from mills, and deadstock fabrics from Italian and French fashion houses. Custom-made production means no stock, no over production, no waste. Our priority is to offer natural fabrics that are biodegradable and have benefits for health and environment. We work with experienced tailors, dressmakers and small ateliers who work on clothes production for our clients. Our service is even more responsible as the supply chain is better optimised and more efficient, with a low carbon footprint.

What are your standout earth-friendly features?

Eco-friendly fabrics, zero waste design, 3D design and visualisation (reduces number of prototypes).

Proudest sustainability initiative you’ve undertaken?

We managed to make luxurious surplus fabrics more accessible to brides around the world.

Greatest sustainability challenge you’ve overcome?

Building our own supply chain to source luxurious surplus fabrics.

Top tips for other aspiring green wedding businesses?

Take it slow and implement initiatives step by step.

What would be your 3 top tips for couples planning a green wedding?

  1. Choose quality over quantity.
  2. Mark your priorities and find eco-friendly alternatives if possible.
  3. Be open-minded and do not hesitate to DIY and ask friends to help.

Eve | Love It Again Bridal

Why is sustainability important to you as a wedding business?

Wedding dresses are typically the most expensive dress you will ever buy and are predominantly purchased for one time use. The fashion industry is the second biggest polluter in the world and by the very nature of the wedding industry, we contribute to that. A wedding dress is at the very centre of our industry. It is the signature piece and if we can prolong the life of those dresses, if the option is there, for it to be loved again, then we have a responsibility to prolong the life of that dress.

What are your standout earth-friendly features?

When you purchase from Love It Again Bridal, you save a dress and other occasion wear from landfill, not just once but twice. Any item you receive from us will use packaging that has been reused and, in most cases, originally made from recycled materials. We use couriers with sustainable policies, committing to green cities and all electric fleets. All of our business equipment is preloved, where it is practical and safe to do so. We work with local suppliers, who also have sustainable practices, to ensure that our styled shoots and other projects, are as sustainable as possible.

Proudest sustainability initiative you’ve undertaken?

“Refresh the Dress Project”. We have taken one of our dresses, which is simple in style and design and are collaborating with a local seamstress, to transform the dress in to something more spectacular, using only existing and preloved materials. We are documenting the process, to transform the dress and hope to reveal it at a fashion show at a local wedding fayre in September.

Greatest sustainability challenge you’ve overcome?

Saving a dress with tomato soup, champagne, sweat, mud, grass and fake tan stains. We thought there was no way we could save it but persevered and have a dress worthy of being loved again!

Why is sustainability important to you as a wedding business?

Sustainability is important to my business because it allows me to create memorable experiences while minimising my environmental impact. Furthermore, by incorporating eco-friendly practices, I contribute to a healthier planet for future generations and meet environmentally-conscious couples’ growing demand for sustainable options.

What are your standout earth-friendly features?

I have transitioned to conducting Zoom consultations instead of meeting clients in person. This switch not only allows for a more flexible scheduling process, but also significantly reduces carbon emissions by eliminating the need for travel. I also prioritise the delivery of digital files in order to save the materials used in physical prints.

Proudest sustainability initiative you’ve undertaken?

I run a 100% paperless office, meaning all correspondence with clients, including contracts and questionnaires, is completed and returned electronically. Thereby eliminating the need for unnecessary printing and significantly reducing waste.

Greatest sustainability challenge you’ve overcome?

Transitioning to a paperless workflow. Initially, I faced resistance from some clients and vendors accustomed to traditional printed materials. However, through persistent efforts to raise awareness about the environmental benefits of going paperless, I successfully made the shift. I now utilise digital contracts, invoices, and photo delivery systems, which has reduced my ecological footprint and improved my overall efficiency and client satisfaction.

Top tips for other aspiring green wedding businesses?

Embrace digital solutions: transition to paperless systems for contracts, invoices, and communication. Utilise digital platforms for sharing information with clients and employees, and consider offering virtual consultations to reduce carbon emissions from travel.

What would be your 3 top tips for couples planning a green wedding?

  1. Opt for a location that already has eco-friendly practices in place, such as energy-efficient lighting, recycling programs, and responsible waste management.
  2. Prioritise working with vendors who share your values and incorporate sustainable practices into their businesses. This can include sourcing locally grown, organic food.
  3. Choose eco-friendly wedding favours, such as seed packets or small potted plants, that your guests can enjoy while also benefiting the environment.

Why is sustainability important to you as a wedding business?

It’s really important to me that my work only spreads good vibes, so of course damaging the planet is out! In 2020 I started tracking and offsetting my personal and business carbon emissions, and along with growing my own little ‘forest’ I’ve continued to take steps to reduce my impact – eating a plant-based diet, cutting out fast fashion, and switching to reusables.

What are your standout earth-friendly features?

I offset my business carbon emissions through Ecologi, and plant 25 trees in my Ecologi forest for every wedding booked with me. My couples get a link to the trees planted in their names, and can track the impact they have as they grow.

Proudest sustainability initiative you’ve undertaken?

The wedding albums I offer are 100% vegan and cruelty-free, using gorgeous eco-leather, inks, binding and glues. My kit bags are vegan leather and I’ve built up a list of other vegan wedding suppliers too. My wedding contracts and regular client contact is paperless and I offer video chats as an alternative to travel for meetings. Shooting weddings obviously involves a lot of necessary travelling and to tackle that I track and offset my carbon emissions through Ecologi. As of April we’ve planted almost 1500 trees, supporting reforestation in Mozambique and Kenya, planting forest gardens in Uganda and saving Moroccan fruit tree species.

Greatest sustainability challenge you’ve overcome?

Realising and researching ways to counteract my environmental impact. Ensuring that I use a reputable company to offset emissions.

Top tips for other aspiring green wedding businesses?

Seek out and collaborate with other businesses with similar priorities, share initiatives and continue to speak out about what you’re doing.

What would be your 3 top tips for couples planning a green wedding?

  1. Look into local sustainable suppliers and ask about how they work to reduce impact.
  2. Think about hiring rather than buying decor and having edible, recyclable or plantable favours, for example flower bombs or details of a donation made on your behalf written on seed paper.
  3. Speak to your venue about food options, are they locally sourced, plant-based etc.

Why is sustainability important to you as a wedding business?

I feel passionately about sustainability and it’s been a cornerstone of my business since its inception to work hard to care for the planet in a lot of daily small ways in my little corner of the world.

What are your standout earth-friendly features?

I use organic and ethically sourced ingredients and plastic-free products throughout my business. I work hard to ensure traceability in all the ingredients I use to ensure they are ethical down to the source.

Proudest sustainability initiative you’ve undertaken?

Investing in an electric car which is powered by green energy, to ensure all my wedding deliveries are green and good for the planet.

Greatest sustainability challenge you’ve overcome?

Ensuring traceability of all my ingredients in an area of the food industry that is notoriously poor in terms of slavery and welfare. I now source many of my products directly such as vanilla bean pods from Native Vanilla to ensure traceability and handmake all vanilla bean paste in house.

Top tips for other aspiring green wedding businesses?

Do your research on where your products come from and where possible use small UK-based companies to help bring down your carbon footprint and help your local business community.

What would be your 3 top tips for couples planning a green wedding?

  1. Look out for suppliers who talk visibly about their sustainability.
  2. Try to work with local or UK-based suppliers and ask the question. We’re usually very excited to be able to discuss our sustainable initiatives with couples.
  3. In terms of cakes – if you’re serving dessert as well drop your numbers by 20% – a lot of guests won’t eat both and it will save you money and wastage!

Gail | The Horsebox Pizza Company

Why is sustainability important to you as a wedding business?

We have always looked to our plates and consumables to be compostable – and compostable in a reasonable timeframe. We settled on palm leaf tableware early on and have added bagasse into the mix as new suitable products have arrived on the market.

What are your standout earth-friendly features?

From the re-purposed horsebox down to the non-bleached napkins and calculating food miles, we always look to make the eco-conscious choices without compromising on flavour or customer experience. Our plates and consumables are plastic-free and compostable, and we have been committed to zero plastic and great taste since 2016.

Proudest sustainability initiative you’ve undertaken?

Choosing a rusty old horsebox to create our business around.

Greatest sustainability challenge you’ve overcome?

We ensure that the wood we source for the pizza oven is locally sourced and wholly a bi-product of the local arboreal maintenance programs.

Top tips for other aspiring green wedding businesses?

Look closely at your consumables and check for greener alternatives. The industry has come a long way and there are greater opportunities to choose eco-conscious products than ever before.

What would be your 3 top tips for couples planning a green wedding?

  1. Choose a venue with easy access to public transport.
  2. Consider offsetting your event with a donation to tree planting.
  3. Look for caterers who source local produce and have an eco-conscious outlook.

Ashley | Ash Tree Floral Designs

Why is sustainability important to you as a wedding business?

Sustainability should be a priority for all businesses nowadays. A lot of people automatically believe that floristry is natural and good for the environment because we work with natural materials. Unfortunately this just isn’t true! A lot of flowers are imported from abroad and are grown in heated glass houses and some are sprayed with harmful pesticides.

What are your standout earth-friendly features?

I try as much as possible to work with seasonal flowers that are grown outside and sourced from reputable suppliers. I also have close links with local, organic British flower growers, where I source the majority of my flowers from during the summer. I am very passionate about reusing and recycling as much as possible so I try to avoid single-use plastic and floral foam in my designs, instead opting for designs in water supported by chicken wire or moss.

Proudest sustainability initiative you’ve undertaken?

I am particularly proud of the close relationship I have forged with my local grower. We regularly work together on weddings and events and have created a powerful symbiotic relationship. I have also recently started teaching at my local college and have adjusted the curriculum to include sustainable floristry techniques. Sharing my knowledge and passion for eco friendly floristry with other budding florists is something I am very proud of.

Greatest sustainability challenge you’ve overcome?

It isn’t always easy to not use floral foam. It is such a convenient invention. Unfortunately it is full of microplastic and never biodegrades. Making the break from foam means I have to explore other options and be a bit of a problem solver. Sometimes designs take longer to make and I have to test my mechanics to make sure the flowers last. It is worth the effort though. Flowers arranged without foam look more free form and natural, and not using foam is much better for the planet!

Top tips for other aspiring green wedding businesses?

Do your research to find out about latest advances in your industry. Talk to fellow businesses to find out what sustainable practises they have in place. Experiment and test out green alternatives for yourself and share the results. Being more sustainable and eco-friendly benefits everyone.

What would be your 3 top tips for couples planning a green wedding?

  1. Opt for seasonal or locally grown flowers
  2. Gift your arrangements to your guests after the wedding so they can be enjoyed for longer
  3. Choose designs that can be repurposed for both your ceremony and reception so you get value for money and enjoy the flowers all day.

Lauren | The Coastal Wedding Co.

Why is sustainability important to you as a wedding business?

I grew up by the sea and take a lot of my inspiration from nature, so it feels only right that I work to protect what inspires me so much. I like to make sustainability accessible to my couples: it doesn’t have to be perfect to be worthwhile doing.

What are your standout earth-friendly features?

I operate plastic-free, and will wherever possible source recyclable, biodegradable or plant-based materials for people’s wedding stationery. I also run charitable initiatives across the year to raise funds for good causes nominated by my couples, and am a corporate sponsor of Surfers Against Sewage, who have been working since 1990 to protect our coastlines.

Proudest sustainability initiative you’ve undertaken?

Definitely my work supporting good causes. Sustainability goes beyond being environmentally-friendly, and in 2022 I raised £346 for good causes through initiatives like my charity map illustration and corporate sponsorships.

Greatest sustainability challenge you’ve overcome?

Finding ways to pack my orders that protects them from damage without using plastic or other single-use materials. I use unbranded packaging that is easy to reuse or recycle, and replaced bubble wrap with wood wool which is compostable. As a paper-goods based business I feel that I have an extra responsibility to offset the impact of that on the environment.

Top tips for other aspiring green wedding businesses?

Start small: whatever you can do will make an impact. It doesn’t need to be a huge change or something that’s going to be difficult to manage.

What would be your 3 top tips for couples planning a green wedding?

  1. Ask your suppliers what environmentally-friendly alternatives they recommend – they’ll have great ideas.
  2. For stationery, avoid single-use acrylic and opt for things like natural fibre, plant-dyed ribbons, or recycled/plantable card.
  3. Anything you can swap or reduce will make a difference. You don’t have to compromise on everything you love and want.

Kay | Make-Up By Kay Louise

Why is sustainability important to you as a wedding business?

My concern is for future generations and our planet. Animals especially are suffering as a result of human disruption. I’ve always been cruelty free in my personal life so it was an obvious choice to continue this ethical stance within my business. It has naturally progressed to include sustainability too. The wedding industry is responsible for so much waste, from food to single-use plastic products. I wanted to be a part of helping to reduce this moving forward.

What are your standout earth-friendly features?

I’m cruelty-free and proud. I use organic skincare products which are certified with the Soil Association. I recycle empty cosmetics using in-store/brand recycle schemes. I also only use bamboo disposables, organic cotton and reusable wipes/pads where I can too.

Proudest sustainability initiative you’ve undertaken?

Choosing brands certified with the Soil Association and Leaping Bunny and ensuring that I recycle wherever I can. Actively sourcing sustainable products and equipment within my business.

Greatest sustainability challenge you’ve overcome?

COVID!!! Single-use aprons, masks and visors were a huge challenge as well as having to use throwaway cotton pads again, but I opted for reusable bamboo wipes that were boiled and disinfected, and where I needed to use disposable wipes, I chose organic cotton or recycled bamboo ones. I had washable aprons made and got a pair of goggles that were reusable and could be cleaned down after use for each client instead.

Top tips for other aspiring green wedding businesses?

Choose you brands wisely. Do the research and don’t be afraid to ask questions to these brands. Start simple, recycle and reuse where you can.

What would be your 3 top tips for couples planning a green wedding?

  1. Do your research and ask questions.
  2. Source local suppliers/produce/products.
  3. Hire or rent items rather than buy.

Why is sustainability important to you as a wedding business?

Engagement rings, wedding bands and commitment rings are deeply sentimental pieces of jewellery, heavily loaded with emotion. To us, the idea that jewellery so symbolic could be mired in a history of exploitation and destruction is just unthinkable.

What are your standout earth-friendly features?

Our default offering of recycled platinum and gold and our collection of reclaimed diamonds and sapphires afford our clients the opportunity to create brand new pieces of jewellery without the use of any new materials whatsoever. The new materials we work with are largely extracted on a small artisanal scale, with environmental impact taken into consideration. We use recycled or FSC certified papers in all marketing materials and packaging, segregate waste for recycling, power our office with Good Energy-supplied green energy, ensure our NEST pensions are only being invested in environmentally-friendly causes, and are working closely with an environmental sustainability specialist to measure our CO2 emissions. Our manufacturing takes place in Hatton Garden, London, where jewellery is transported from A to B on foot – that’s some seriously low mileage!

Proudest sustainability initiative you’ve undertaken?

We’re really proud to fulfil our promise of planting 10 new trees for every piece of jewellery we sell in partnership with One Tree Planted. We have also gained our ‘Created in the UK’ certification, on account of 100% of our jewellery being produced locally.

Greatest sustainability challenge you’ve overcome?

The harsh reality for jewellers who wish to create sustainable pieces is that ethics still significantly limit material and manufacturing options. Whilst the trade has progressed since we first started our journey, our palette is still far more limited than if we were to produce jewels en masse, using industry-standard materials. It’s not just the processes of sourcing and creating that are challenging for ethical jewellers like us, but the costs incurred. Ethically-sourced materials and sustainable manufacturing techniques are simply more expensive to commission.

Top tips for other aspiring green wedding businesses?

If you are to carve yourself a long-term place in the field of ethical weddings, it’s crucial that you are not just unique, but authentic. Take some time to sit down and really consider what it is that makes you unparalleled. Ask yourself these three simple questions. Once you’ve found the answers to these questions – and you believe in them – you are unstoppable.

  1. What’s your innovation?
  2. Why do you care about pursuing this?
  3. What makes your work stand head and shoulders above everyone else?

What would be your 3 top tips for couples planning a green wedding?

  1. Rent whatever you can. Single-use products are the bane of planet Earth, so when shopping for decor, equipment or clothing for your wedding, seek out rental websites instead of buying new. Loaning high-end products is also a great way to upgrade your wedding without the price tags.
  2. Think ‘seasonal and local’ at all times. From your wedding flowers to your table decorations and wedding breakfast, you can minimise your environmental impact – and support some independent businesses in the process – by foraging and shopping locally.
  3. Grill your wedding jeweller. Any jewellery brand who works hard to minimise its environmental impact, maximise its positive socioeconomic output and maintain transparent supply chains will be proud to shout about it. Take some time to research the importance of ethical metals, diamonds and gemstones and define what ‘ethical’ means to you personally.

From earth-friendly venues and bouquets to eco-conscious photographers and caterers, there are so many ways to make your wedding greener. We hope our incredible Sustainability Heroes, with their stories and expert advice, will inspire you to think about the positive steps you can take – even small-scale, individual changes can have a mighty impact collectively.

Supplier Showcase: Veganuary Edition

Sustainable and ethical weddings are on the rise. Back in the day, very few venues and suppliers would cater for such requirements, or when they did, would do so with little creativity (cue sad stuffed mushroom and limp lettuce leaf). But now, there’s a demand amongst today’s couples for more locally sourced, ethical menus, as well as vegan and cruelty-free wedding choices. And so, celebrate the month of Veganuary, we’re showcasing our favourite vegan venues and suppliers.

1. The Wellbeing Farm

Photo © The Wellbeing Farm | See their Bridebook profile

The Wellbeing Farm is one of our favourite sustainable wedding venues…period. It offers a fun, unique farm-based barn experience, is the first B Corp certified venue in the UK, and has just become members of the Sustainable Restaurant Association (which you can’t enter if you haven’t got sufficient vegan and other dietary credentials). Their general ethos is around wellbeing, and minimising stress for its couples. And ensuring every single one of your guests has a creative and tasty meal – whether they’re vegan, gluten-free or lactose-free – is a huge part of that. Their innovative Head Chef sources natural, local produce to create vegetarian and vegan menus that are big in both quality and taste, and even went on a course specialising in vegan desserts (so no more lonely fresh fruit salads!). A lot of venues may offer a single vegan option, but this vegan-friendly venue prides itself on offering a range – a range of starters, a range of mains, a range of desserts. So you’ll be spoilt for choice! For the meat lovers out there, they use Meatless Farm and Beyond Burger as meal substitutes, so you’ll hardly notice the difference.

2. Wilderness Weddings

Photo © Wilderness Weddings | See their Bridebook profile

Stylish and sustainable, relaxed and boho, there’s so much to love about Wilderness Weddings. Set in a protected nature reserve, it features woodlands, giant tipi tents, and a lakeside boathouse. Their seven accredited caterers provide a wealth of dining options, catering for all tastes and budgets. For vegetarians and vegans in particular, choose Scott Anderson catering, who pride themselves on designing bespoke menus around each couple’s requirements. Look no further for creative canapés, scrumptious sharing wedding breakfasts, and exquisite evening platters!

With pre-event tastings available, you can effortlessly sample different flavours and select your favourite dishes ahead of your big day.

4. The Hogless Roast

Two veggies unable to stomach another bean burger, Matt and Ross, a.k.a. The Hogless Roast, have reimagined the traditional hog roast for a new generation, whether you’re a vegan or simply trying to reduce your meat consumption. Their smoky BBQ vegan burgers use the best plant protein out there – lathered in apple sauce, topped with homemade stuffing, and loaded into a toasted vegan brioche bun. They’re packed with protein and fibre, gluten-free, and, most importantly, keep pigs off plates! Plus, they only use eco-friendly packaging, and are members of the NCASS.

We’ve taken the best plant based protein out there, infused it with smoky BBQ flavours, lathered it in apple sauce, topped it with homemade stuffing and packed it into a toasted vegan brioche bun. Then we’ve thrown in some naughty vegan crackling for good measure!

Venue Showcase: Rise Hall

Rise Hall is a luxury exclusive use wedding venue, perfect for a wedding staycation! Nestled in the peaceful Yorkshire countryside, Rise Hall is your very own ‘stately home from home’.

We talked to Rebecca Barker, the Sales & Business Development Manager at Rise Hall  to find out more this spectacular country house, that with modern and  luxurious comforts.

Tell us about yourself!

I have been in the wedding industry for 17 years! I ran my own family business for 12 years, so enjoyed every aspect of the job, from wedding planning and looking after brides, to sales and more! I have two children, Florence age 6 and Benjamin, age 3, so it is a very busy household. In my free time, when I get it, I like to cook (my family love my chicken ham and leek pie) I also like spending time with the kids, going out to lovely places to eat and an afternoon tea when I can!

What drew you to the wedding world?

Well my story is a little different, many moons ago, my parents decided to renovate a holiday cottage on our land. From there, it became apparent that there was a market and with a country house also on the estate too, it became the perfect spot for guests to enjoy. One day, a lovely couple rang and asked if they could hire all of them for wedding. Having never done a wedding before or had any experience, we took the gamble and said yes!! That year we ended up doing 9 weddings and the next year we did 38 weddings. From then the business went from strength to strength, as did my passion for all things weddings! They do say, you sometimes find your calling in unusual places and I certainly found mine.

What do you think makes your venue unique?

Rise Hall is complete unique, as it is a true home from home feel, with the grandeur of a stately home. The service is personal and comforting for couples, with the added atmosphere of the homely touches, makes them feel at ease. Through in years of experience, super food and drink, the perfect match for the perfect couple. Our events team are famous for going above and beyond, helping out in every way they can! With their events boxes stocked with everything you couple possibly need and more, no problem will be too big!

How do you get to know your couples before the big day?

It is really important for all the team to get to know our couples and from the moment they book, they are treated like VIPS. We send little gifts throughout the planning process, invite them to events and also are present at meetings. Been an ear to listen is the perfect way to become part of their family, as weddings are often a whole family affair.

What do you think makes for the perfect wedding?

What makes the perfect wedding? The perfect timeline!! I have said it time and time again, nail that timeline and everything will be a smooth, well oiled machine. There isn’t time to ‘lets see how it goes’ you need the confidence to know the team are on it! When the timings run well, everyone is happy!

What is your #1 wedding planning tip for couples?

Couples should book Rise Hall because they will be looked after from the moment they book, all throughout the planning process and beyond. We take great pride in our service and this isn’t just on the wedding day, but every minute of the planning too!

What do you love about Bridebook?

What do I love about Bridebook? EVERYTHING!! I think the fact that the app allows you to plan your whole wedding, makes for less stress and that is a massive bonus in my world!!

What’s the most memorable wedding you’ve had?

Why should a couple book Rise Hall?

Couples should book Rise Hall because they will be looked after from the moment they book, all throughout the planning process and beyond. We take great pride in our service and this isn’t just on the wedding day, but every minute of the planning too!

Venue Showcase: Holdsworth House Hotel & Restaurant

Built in 1633 this venue is a four star family owned hotel, packed full of character and history. They have been hosting weddings for 60 years and know how to make your day perfect. You’ll find open fires, cosy lounges, fine antiques and tapestries that together create a sense of history, calm and comfort

We talked to Claire Nicholl, the Wedding and Events Manager at Holdsworth House Hotel & Restaurant to find out more this award winning restaurant and historic venue.

Tell us about yourself!

I’ve worked at Holdsworth House for almost 25 years, so in that time I’ve helped arrange probably 3000 weddings. We ‘re exclusive – we only allow one wedding per day, but we average around 120 weddings per year. I love dogs, so when I’m not working, I’m walking my dog.

Venue Showcase: Holdsworth House Hotel & Restaurant

What drew you to the wedding world?

25 years ago, I suppose the job really suited me. I’m a stickler for detail and people joke that I have a photographic memory, as I do tend to retain facts, figures, couples’ names and all their wedding details! Today, I can’t imagine doing anything else. After 25 years there’s very little that can catch met out or no problem that can’t be resolved. Weddings provide a very happy working environment: it’s a nice, feel-good job to be involved in. It’s not just an office job, I’m often on my feet too meeting people and walking them round the venue.

What do you think makes your venue unique?

The hotel sells itself from a physical standpoint: it’s a beautiful, historic building in three acres of well-kept gardens. But I don’t think you can put a price on experience. It’s not just me that’s been here a long time. Many of us in the wedding team have built a career at Holdsworth House. Tracy, our Master of Ceremonies, has been here over 30 years, our General Manager around 10 years. When you have such a consistent, experienced team the confidence rubs off on guests and couples; they can relax fully and enjoy their day knowing they’re in safe hands. I also believe that because Holdsworth House is independent (owned by the same family since 1962), there’s a level of care, love and attention that you feel compelled to give; you truly go out of your way because its personal. We really are a family at the hotel.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is PlasDinam-1_-_Louise_Edmunds.jpg

How do you get to know your couples before the big day?

We have an initial meeting, and we discuss lots of ideas. Essentially, we listen first. We need to understand the couple’s needs, expectations and their personal touches/requirements. We then invite them in for a series of meetings or wedding menu tastings. By the time the wedding comes, it’s like we’re close friends! I’m really proud that people open up to me but it’s important that I remain professional – in the run up to a wedding, many people want to be given clear, detailed advice, and they look to me as the provider of that assurance. In many cases I’m holding couples’ secrets too, whether that be a surprise element of the day or some deeply personal information that they don’t want to reveal to guests. I must always remain completely discreet and supportive. Throughout the lead-up to their big day, our coupes will meet all the team within Holdsworth House. When they come for their wedding tasting, they’ll get to know the award-winning kitchen and restaurant team. When they select their accommodation, they’ll bump into our fantastic housekeepers. And, of course, everyone is always warmly greeted by our reception staff who have incredible knowledge and a can-do attitude. By the day of the wedding, our operations team has already been fully briefed and is ready to spring into action – it’s like watching all the cogs of a well-oiled machine working together.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is J_E-553_-_Louise_Edmunds.jpg

What do you think makes for the perfect wedding?

For the couple it’s when you can completely let go and be in the moment. Inevitably things will change because people – like the weather – are unpredictable. But when you can truly trust the team around you to deliver, and you can look back on your wedding day with multiple ‘wow’ moments, then that’s when you’ve had the perfect wedding. It’s not about quantity, it’s 100% about quality.

What is your #1 wedding planning tip for couples?

Make sure you book your venue and registrar (if applicable) early. Once that’s in place everything else can follow on in due course.

What do you love about Bridebook?

We meet so many amazing couples through Bridebook. Each has a unique story and it’s a privilege to be part of such personal events. Bridebook is excellent for helping guide couples and help them plan, it’s very much in line with our ethos.

What’s the most memorable wedding you’ve had?

I love it when couples bring their dogs to weddings to as ring-bearers. We also get Eric our resident cat photo-bombing some wedding pictures. Whilst most of our weddings are for 80 – 100 guests, we have some absolutely stunning small and intimate weddings. Our Stone Gazebo, in the hotel gardens, is the smallest licensed venue in England and only accommodates 10 people, so super-romantic ceremonies in here are just gorgeous. Most weddings here are traditional white weddings, but we also enjoy seeing the alternative events. From outdoor garden ceremonies to super-cosy winter weddings, vintage or Steam Punk dress codes to kilts and swords and military events – every wedding is different. In October 2021, we hosted the wedding of a couple who had met at a literary event we’d held at the hotel the previous year. There were so many poignant moments, you couldn’t help getting sucked into the fairy tale. Our couple had been inspired by the TV Show ‘Gentleman Jack’, which was filmed nearby in Halifax. Not only did the true story of Anne Lister inspire them, but they were able to track down suppliers that the TV show had used – like the jeweller who made the costume jewellery for the actors. They were an incredible, fun couple and they just celebrated what the essence of being married was all about – LOVE!!

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Orchard_Marquee-57-Edit_-_Black_Horse_Beamish.jpg

Why should a couple book Holdsworth House Hotel & Restaurant?

Honestly? You can relax completely here. We’ve been hosting weddings for over 50 years, not many venues can say that and we’re not going anywhere; we’re a very robust business. We’re flexible, knowledgeable and great with people obviously! At the end of the day, as beautiful as a venue is it’s the people – the interaction between the guests and the team – that make the difference. The fact that we have stunning photo backdrops and gardens is of course a huge bonus! The other reason is that we make hosting your wedding so easy. Some venues are forever putting in barriers, saying what you can’t do. We say what you CAN do, and we’ll pull out the stops to make your dream wedding happen. We really do take care of everything, with genuine care and attention. The whole team is involved so you’re not rely on one person for everything – what if you can’t get hold of that one person?

What’s the best photo spot at Holdsworth House Hotel & Restaurant?

There are lots of Insta-friendly spots at Holdsworth House. If you’ve got a dress with a train, then a photo going down the stairs is beautiful. Our restaurant and halls have been called a ‘photographer’s dream’ by a well-known Insta photographer (for its natural light and character). But my favourite spot is out the front of the hotel in the gardens with the historic facade behind you – it’s completely timeless.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Forget_me_knot_images_-_Black_Horse_Beamish.jpg

What part of your business are you most proud of?

The team, without a doubt and our honesty and integrity. We’re a friendly bunch and we do have a laugh. Everyone is very professional, truly cares and takes things personally.

How do you feel technology is changing the industry?

It really helped during the pandemic when couples were restricted on numbers of guests. We had live-stream weddings, which meant people who couldn’t be there in person could still witness the event. Technology has changed how some couples use suppliers, we see lots of people designing and printing their own stationery, people discussing their flower arrangements over Zoom or email, and looking for inspiration from Instagram and Pinterest.

Any final advice for a couple?

Food is a very important part of your day, so be sure your venue includes menu tastings. Ask your venue if it runs a ‘fresh banqueting service’ like we do at Holdsworth House i.e., do they cook your wedding breakfast fresh rather than plating and reheating? It’s surprising what a difference it can make to the taste and quality. If the last 50 years has taught us anything, it’s how to turn out the kind of food served in our fine-dining restaurant on a large scale.

A huge thank you to Claire Nicholl for answering our questions. Check out Holdsworth House Hotel & Restaurant on Bridebook!

Venue Showcase: Applewood Hall

Situated in the quaint village of Banham, one of Norfolk’s best-kept secrets Applewood Hall offers an undeniably unique wedding venue for your special day.

Once the grounds of the Grove Farm orchard, Applewood Hall served as the store during the harvest season. Now an elegantly decorated entertaining space, it offers a licensed bar, dance floor, stage and seating for up to 200 guests. Applewood Hall is a harmonious combination of rustic charm and contemporary style.

We talked to Kiera Goymour , Wedding Executive at Applewood Hall

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is 011A0348_1.jpg

Tell us a little bit about yourself

Hello I’m Kiera…
I’m a lover of gin and our unofficial wedding cake taster. I always enjoy a piece of cake with my morning coffee the day after a wedding! I’m also the owner of resident hound and team mascot, Frankie Sausage. You’ll usually find me dashing about in flats, there’s a reason I wear a step counter! And one thing you might not know, I have locked myself in the wedding garden at least 5 times (just this year!), which has meant having to climb over a very tall gate to get out!

What drew you to the wedding world?

Having worked in the corporate events world in London for 10 years, I felt the pull to return to Norfolk where I grew up. I missed the drive and challenge of being involved in the family business. Due to my events background, my Dad asked me to take on the management of Applewood Hall and its sister business, Applewood Countryside Park (family camping and glamping). Four years on and I haven’t quite found the work/ life balance I was hoping for but I wouldn’t change it. How do you get to know your couples before the big day?

When couples make a booking with us, we start with a planning meeting as it really helps us get to know our couples; along with their style, how they picture their perfect day and what we can do to make it happen. This process really helps to pinpoint the small things that will make their day feel extra special and unique to them. For example, we have recently introduced bespoke cocktails and mocktails, offering couples the opportunity to choose seasonal flavours, favourite ingredients and personalise the cocktail names so they tie into their theme or tell a story!

What do you think makes for the perfect wedding?

Fun, laughter and a tipple or two. It’s that simple!

What is your #1 wedding planning tip for couples?

It’s YOUR day, so don’t be afraid to be a bit selfish when it comes to things like your menu choices, drink selection and seating plans. Prefer to have canapés during your drinks reception rather than a starter, why not! If you want an indulgent, gooey chocolate dessert, go for it! If you’d prefer to have a classic G&T rather than bubbles for the toast, do it! If you want the seating to be more informal with no seating plan, be bold! These small things will help your day feel special and unique to you.

What’s the best photo spot at Applewood Hall?

Our wedding garden! This beautifully landscaped space features a stunning gazebo, contemporary outdoor furniture, lots of lush greenery, fire pit tables and festoon lighting. The perfect backdrop for wedding photos and alfresco drinks in the sunshine!

What part of your business are you most proud of?

Our team! We have a small, dedicated team, which means our couples experience a friendly, hands-on approach from their initial enquiry and showround appointment to their menu tasting, planning meetings and of course, the big day itself.

How do you feel technology is changing the industry?

Couples are planning their weddings online more than ever before. We have been making use of Facebook Live to host virtual tours and hosting monthly #wedminwednesday sessions to help couples along their wedding planning journey.

What is the one piece of advice you would give to couples that are currently struggling amidst the COVID-19 crisis?

We are in this together and and we will all get through this together. If you’ve had to postpone, it must be heartbreaking to move from your original date and to have to wait a bit longer for your wedding, but it will be so worth it. We want your day to be a day of celebration, love and special memories; focused on you (not coronavirus, that’s had enough attention!).

What do you love about Bridebook?

It’s great to be able to showcase everything we offer all in one place; from pricing and photos to reviews and offers. Tracking enquiries and following our analytics is super simple too.

There is something incredibly rewarding about making someone’s big day go smoothly. Seeing the happiness on the couples faces on the day when all of the planning comes together, knowing we contributed to that, it’s a great feeling.

Why not?! We have the most stunning location, amazing food and exceptional service so it really will be the best day of their lives.

We have so many beautiful spots but our favourite is our entrance bridge over the Bybrook river that has a gorgeous shot of the whole of the Manor in the background.

What part of your business are you most proud of?

Definitely the people, we are like one big family. Everyone works incredibly hard and always supports each other.

How do you feel technology is changing the industry?

In terms of wedding planning, it is a game changer! There are so many apps, websites and companies that can help you now, it’s great! It takes away a lot of the stress.

What is the one piece of advice you would give to couples that are currently struggling amidst the COVID-19 crisis?

Firstly, I hope you are ok! We have seen first hand how the pandemic has affected couples, and made what should be a really enjoyable time, really stressful. Please just know we will be here to support you the whole way, and do whatever we can to help make it easier and as special as it can be.

A huge thank you to Jennifer and Cassie for answering our questions. Check out The Manor House on Bridebook!

Venue Showcase: Lainston House

Lainston House is a 17th-Century luxury hotel. Set in 63 acres of gorgeous Hampshire countryside, five-star Lainston House could be the perfect setting for the wedding of your dreams.

We talked to Sophie Mitchell-Bird, Wedding Executive at Lainston House.

Tell us about yourself!

I’ve been very lucky to have worked in the wedding world for almost 3 years and have enjoyed every second. I have a miniature dachshund called Rolo and a cat named Tabitha. I’m a massive foodie so enjoy going out for dinner and trying new places… I’m a sucker for a good cocktail too!

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Me_with_my_sister_on_her_wedding_-_Black_Horse_Beamish.png

What drew you to the wedding world?

Honestly, I think the wedding world found me! My background has always been theatre and this is what I graduated from uni in, so I’d always expected to go straight into something related to this instead. After university, I worked as a comedy producer, organising monthly charity stand-up comedy nights. That was great fun and where my love for events planning begun — and shortly after, I found my passion… Weddings!

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is IMG_0387_-_Black_Horse_Beamish.jpg

What do you think makes your venue unique?

For a start, the grounds of Lainston House are breathtaking… The photo opportunities are endless! The venue is rich with history too, with so many interesting facts and stories. What makes our space even more unique is the people. The team is made up of the most hardworking, dedicated and passionate individuals I’ve met… We’re like one big family!

How do you get to know your couples before the big day?

I will be in touch regularly, either by phone or email, and I love it when my couples do the same. I love to hear all about what you’ve both been up too, your holidays, you name it! It’s also great to see my couples in person and enjoy a cup of coffee together in the lead up to the wedding.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is J_E-553_-_Louise_Edmunds.jpg

What do you think makes for the perfect wedding?

Picking things you both like, not just what you think others will like! After all, it’s your special day and you only do it once!

What is your #1 wedding planning tip for couples?

Begin thinking about your table plan early as this can sometimes be the hardest part to figure out, so this will take pressure off you… But most importantly, enjoy it!

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is J_E-553_-_Louise_Edmunds.jpg

What’s the most memorable wedding you’ve had?

We recently had a stunning tipi on our South Lawn which was breathtaking… The South Lawn is perfect for it! We’ve had a few singing waiters over the summer which are also so fun and a real surprise to all your guests.

Why should a couple book Lainston House?

We’re a beautiful, luxury, five-star manor house where dream days happen. By hiring out the venue exclusively, you can feel like royalty for the day, with your nearest and dearest around you. Local produce is super important to us so the majority of our suppliers will be local to either Winchester or Hampshire, with our onsite Kitchen Garden also growing our own produce. With 63 acres, the photo opportunities are endless — adding that “wow” factor for your guests and creating memories to cherish forever!

What is the best photo spot at Lainston House?

This is a tricky one as there are so many stunning photo spots… But outside on the terrace with the beautiful avenue of lime trees is a must!

What part of your business are you most proud of?

I couldn’t pick just one part as I’m proud of all departments at Lainston House who all help achieve dream wedding days!

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is BT7A2068_-_Black_Horse_Beamish.jpg

How do you feel technology is changing the industry?

Technology is making it easier for couples to plan, especially wonderful platforms like Bridebook where you can plan your whole day. Wedding websites where your guests can RSVP and let you know dietaries and you can to give information quickly… What a great idea!

What is the one piece of advice you would give to couples that are currently struggling amidst the COVID-19 crisis?

Everything will come together in the end. After all, nothing can stop love! If you’re struggling at the moment, please do reach out to your venue or suppliers so they can help. You’re not alone.

A huge thank you to Sophie Mitchell-Bird for answering our questions. Check out Lainston House on Bridebook!

Venue Showcase: Pennyhill Park

Pennyhill Park is a 19th century Mansion House that is surrounded by lily ponds, landscaped gardens and plenty of greenery whereas the inside of the hotel also provides stunning architecture.

We talked to Jodey Hatch, Wedding Manager at Pennyhill Park to find out more about this stunning venue.

Tell us about yourself!

I have been in the wedding industry for 9 years, pretty much my whole career. I love spending time with friends and family as much as I can, going out for meals, travelling and exploring anything new. I have one gorgeous black cat but if I had my way I would have many more and dogs too!

What drew you to the wedding world?

After leaving school I wasn’t too sure what I wanted to do, I thought some customer service experience would be a good start so I got a job waitressing at a hotel which included working at weddings. After a while I began running them operationally and knew I loved them and had to continue this as my career.  I finally got a role as a wedding coordinator and it has just snowballed from there.

What do you think makes Pennyhill Park unique?

Pennyhill Park is unique in many ways; however I do feel the people that work here is what stands us out from the crowd. We take time to get to know our couples, we understand this is the biggest day of our couple’s lives and when they spend months or even years planning this they expect the best.  We welcome our guests on that first showaround with a glass of bubbles and personalised sweet treats just to get started!

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is PlasDinam-1_-_Louise_Edmunds.jpg

How do you get to know your couples before the big day?

Every couple is unique, which is one thing that makes me love my job so much! I find it’s important to listen to each couples needs and get to know them as an individual. They then get the chance to build trust with their dedicated event coordinator; this might be done with many visits to our bar over a cup of coffee or even when it comes to meeting the head chef to discuss their menus.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is J_E-553_-_Louise_Edmunds.jpg

What do you think makes for the perfect wedding?

For me I think that a wedding that shows the couples personality have been the most perfect. Ultimately this day is about the two of you, so to put on little touches that represent you, are the perfect Weddings. You’re guests will absolutely love this as they are here to share this special day with you.

What is your #1 wedding planning tip for couples?

Try and keep it fun, it’s easy to feel stressed about the planning but this really should be the most enjoyable part! When it’s all over you will want to do it all over again and wish you had enjoyed it more.

What do you love about Bridebook?

It’s a really good tool to help us know what our couples are looking for before they have even come to see us. It’s also a great platform to let couples know about us as a venue and really showcase ourselves.

What’s the most memorable wedding you’ve had at Pennyhill Park?

One bride at Pennyhill Park did trust me with planning a very special surprise for the Groom; it was a group of storm troopers that were going to walk don the aisle! The Groom of course was a massive star wars fan and this was a complete surprise to him and all the guests. Everyone loved it and it was so memorable even all the team here wanted to come out and watch as when do you ever have a wedding with storm troopers walking down the aisle! All the guest were there waiting for photos with them, star wars fans or not it was a great talking point for the guests for the rest of the day.

Why should a couple book Pennyhill Park?

We have something for everyone, if it being fantastic food you are looking for then come meet our Michelin star chef and discuss your menus with our amazing team at the Latymer restaurant. If its luxury accommodation we have 124 individually designed bedrooms that will give all your guests that wow factor. Not to mention our stunning 120 acres of Parkland with ample photo opportunities for our couples to remember and look back on for years to come.

What’s the best photo spot at Pennyhill Park?

This is hard as there are so many good ones! But I have to say our secret garden is just wonderful photo opportunity for our couples. With its a running waterfall and wild flowers surrounding, it makes it feel like a bit of fairytale, which I think is what most couples are looking for on their big day.

What part of your business are you most proud of?

Another tough one, but we have an amazing team here who all strive on wanting the same thing of creating happiness in an amazing place. I honestly feel this is what our couples comment on most after their wedding day is how well they felt looked after, from the very first step through the door by our reception team, to meeting the chef at their menu tasting and to the fantastic team who personally look after their big day for them.

How do you feel technology is changing the industry?

I think the last 18 months have defiantly taught us a lot, opening us up to Zoom show rounds in times when we couldn’t see each other in person has been so beneficial for businesses and couples. It meant that wedding planning could still go ahead; giving couples something to look forward too.  I do find mainly we all much prefer to see each other in person, but this has given us the chance to even plan a few destination weddings now we are all up to speed with different technology tools available to us.

What is the one piece of advice you would give to couples that are currently struggling amidst the COVID-19 crisis?

Keep going, I can’t imagine how hard it must have been for couples but just keep planning. Keep in touch with your suppliers so they know your concerns so they know how to help you.

A huge thank you to Jodey Hatch for answering our questions. Check out Pennyhill Park on Bridebook!

Venue Showcase: Fanhams Hall

Fanhams Hall is a luxury and unique wedding venue with outstanding warming open fires in winter, tumbling waterfalls in summer and beautiful private rooms. With stunning features of the original Grade II listed Jacobean manor house all year round.

We talked to Symphonie Wolzak, Wedding Manager/ Executive at Fanhams Hall to find out more about this stunning venue.

Tell us about yourself!

Fun fact: I was named after the Hershey’s Chocolate candy bar- hehe! I was born in San Antonio, Texas so am in love with and super proud of my Tex-Mex culture (Texas-Mexican). I consider myself to make the best homemade tortillas in England, as have yet to come across a Mexican restaurant where they are as good as mine! I love to cook, if you haven’t guessed already and my favourite cuisine is my home-land original Tex-Mex of course…very different from Cali-Mex! I’m super blessed my husband loves his spicy food, because to be honest I really don’t know how to not have a bit of chilli in any of my dishes.

What drew you to the wedding world?

The wedding world found me! A friend of mine was working in events and I just graduated university. Lost, confused, and no work family to tag onto in the big city (NYC), she rung me and said, “Hey come try this!”. My first day helping run a wedding with her, I was sold! The excitement and love in the air was so addicting, like sweet cotton candy; you couldn’t leave the room in fear you’d miss out. The adrenaline you get when something goes wrong last minute like the father of bride is running late, or the zip of one of the bridesmaid’s dresses broke just minutes before announcing them into the room! I love having to think in seconds on how to fix it or stall the wedding without the couple finding out or having enough time to worry; these are the moments I live for! Knowing you fixed it and helped make the couples day absolutely perfect without them realising the storm the team went through to get there. What a buzz!

What do you think makes Fanhams Hall unique?

Our team honestly. We all genuinely want the best day for our couples and understand that every wedding is unique, so we really do our best to be flexible and deliver any of their special requests they may have.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is PlasDinam-1_-_Louise_Edmunds.jpg

How do you get to know your couples before the big day?

Once booked with us, we usually know a bit about our couples already. We like to “Sit and Love” with our couples when they first come to meet with us and see the venue, before they even book with us. Listening to the couple about what is important to them and connecting through their excitement and anticipation of one of the most important days of their lives. We believe that a connection before booking with your couple is so important, because it really helps set up the trust relationship between us and the couple, so they have the best planning experience with us. We also do little check ins with our couples to see if they want a coffee catch up to discuss any questions or a zoom call if they can’t make it all the way back to us (like my fellow American couples!).

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is J_E-553_-_Louise_Edmunds.jpg

What do you think makes for the perfect wedding?

Hmmm…perfect wedding? I’m a cheese ball…I have to say the couple themselves. They are what make the day perfect because they are starting an amazing journey together that is a life changer. I mean what’s more perfect then marrying your best friend? If I have to be choose a materialistic idea…having everything in one place to help make it easier for you and your guests. Accommodation, ceremony, reception, things like this, even the rehearsal dinner if you can. It just make it less complicated in planning, because then you know that the venue you are with (who you choose in the first place!) will be doing their best to make sure you have the perfect wedding celebration whilst there!

What is your #1 wedding planning tip for couples?

When looking for your venue, be sure either to visit it on a rainy day or at least envision the venue in the rain…because if you love it when it’s raining, you’ll love it even more when the suns out and not be too disappointed if it does rain. Let’s be honest we live in England, so better to prepare from the beginning! Oh, and also clear umbrellas. …these are the best for photos on our grounds or wherever you end up choosing. It will still get you outside for gorgeous photos on our grounds and capture the beauty surrounded by you.

What do you love about Bridebook?

How easy it is to use for both couples and us as a venue! Love the little blogs they write and tips they give out. So easy for couples to organise themselves using their nifty tools from guest lists to gift lists, hehe!

What’s the most memorable wedding you’ve had at Fanhams Hall?

Being a hairdresser for the little flower girls, minutes before they walked down the aisle. This involved me taking out my own hair and using hair pins on them, because the bride totally forgot about their hair and was running out of time! Also, another time was sewing up the bridesmaid in her dress (I might have mentioned this before!). Her dress split just before we were to announce them into the reception, and here I am with another colleague just sewing her in completely. I think I even ended up using a stapler at one point, because I didn’t have enough thread! Oh and another time was me having to go under the brides dress to adjust her because she felt something rip…it was minutes before she had to walk down the aisle, so had to go under and quickly see what ripped…was just a simple button that needed re-buttoning. Done it and she was off! There’s more of course, but too many to share. Ahhh… just love the whole thrill of being able to help make their day absolutely perfect!

Why should a couple book Fanhams Hall?

A couple should choose Fanhams Hall because not only are we a beautiful 17th Century Jacobean mansion with gorgeous unique Japanese style gardens and an authentic Japanese Tea house! What wedding venue in England can say they have authentic Japanese style gardens?! Another reason why couples should book us is that we love weddings! We love weddings so much we really try to meet our couples unique requirement to make their day that more special. We’ve been flexible from our menus (Asian- English infusion anyone?) to creating a couple’s signature cocktail for the day for their guests to order from the bar. We love being apart of our couples special day from beginning to end, and genuinely want to help make it a day they wont forget, so the little unique requests we can do, we will!

What’s the best photo spot at Fanhams Hall?

Ohhhhh there are so many!!!! I have to say two if that’s okay?! First one is in the main grounds outside our formal gardens with Fanhams Hall in the background. Second one is in the fields near the main entrance, surprising I know! Lots of people think I would have said our Wisteria walk or near the rose garden, which are both really beautiful, but I do love the fields in August and September where the grass is over grown and you get these really beautiful rustic and dreamy photos…you could be anywhere in the world, but it’s so gorgeous!!! Makes me want to put on my wedding dress and take photos there! Haha!

What part of your business are you most proud of?

Fanhams Hall, which is part of the Exclusive Collection Group, has become the first ever hospitality business to receive a B-Corp accreditation. This means being recognised as a sustainable business. B-Corp will improve the value we create for our customers through the service we give, and help improve our impact on the planet by learning how to practise environmental stewardship. It really is a fantastic accomplishment and am super proud to be apart of this milestone.

How do you feel technology is changing the industry?

For couples, technology allows people to shop in the comfort of their own homes! It’s easy access for them. It really give them the chance to really search what they are looking for and not  waste time visiting venues face to face, or having in person meetings with loads of different suppliers trying to decide what is right for them. Social media especially helps them “stalk-shop”- Instagram is great for this! For us as suppliers, it helps us reach more potential couples looking for support on their wedding. We can have all of our information readily available for them to see and even experience for themselves. We can reach a whole other country even, like America or South Africa! We currently have American couples getting married here who have found us online and loved our photos and videos on our Instagram page. Technology has helped us get them to see the venue, book and plan their wedding with us here at Fanhams Hall. We are not just focusing on one country; we are able to reach the whole world this way, which is really amazing!

What is the one piece of advice you would give to couples that are currently struggling amidst the COVID-19 crisis?

Talk to each other. Communication is so important, you may both find you two are feeling the exact same way about things. If you are both are struggling, then find a professional to talk to together to help you both overcome this struggle together. It’s not a bad thing to find a un-bias mind out there to help guide you through these trying times, because fact is, this is not normal and its okay to struggle with it all. Find peace and reassurance in the fact that if you two can get through this together, you two can make it through anything. Keep each other positive about the wedding. If one of you starts feeling upset or down about the wedding plans, pick each other up. Have a fun distraction like date night, or start making the wedding favours together and imagining how the day will go.

What is your favourite part of the wedding day?

If you haven’t guessed already, we love weddings! My favourite part of a wedding day is when I get to fluff the brides dress before she walks down the aisle. Goosebumps every time watching them take those final steps to marry their best friend!

A huge thank you to Symphonie Wolzak for answering our questions. Check out Fanhams Hall on Bridebook!

Venue Showcase: Black Horse Beamish (Red Row Estate)

Featuring one of the only lavender fields in the North East with panoramic views of the Beamish Valley countryside. The Black Horse Beamish and Orchard Marquee is set in 37 acres on Red Row Estate, featuring stunning lavender fields, woodland, filled with wildlife and farmyard antiques.

We talked to Grace Fountain, the Venue Manager at Black Horse Beamish (Red Row Estate) to find out more this unique and contemporary venue.

Tell us about yourself!

We are a family owned business and have been proudly welcoming our guests for over 20 years. Although the original 300 year old pub has been in my family for over 20 years and I’ve grown up listening to conversations about it around the dinner table, I officially started working for the company 10 years ago. Since then the business and building have undergone an extensive refurbishment, expansion and development programme. In my free time I love to walk my dog around our glorious 40 acre sprawl, the stunning lavender field is one of the only in the North East, we have woodland riddled with wildlife and lots of farmyard antiques!

What drew you to the wedding world?

I always had a passion for hospitality and once I completed my degree there was no question where I was going to work. I’ve had the privilege of working in numerous different roles including wedding coordinator and have been able to grow as the business has grown, which I think has been a fantastic and unique experience. Red Row Estate is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful areas of the North East so being able to market that and convert ideas into a reality is something I love.

What do you think makes your venue unique?

My colleagues are undoubtedly what makes our venue so special, we are a small close-knit team. The key to our success is planning, planning, planning! You have to be extremely organised, passionate, and have a keen attention to detail. One of the most important skills, which isn’t often taught in this industry, is to be an unofficial therapist, councillor and shoulder to cry on when needed. Weddings can be very emotional and stressful, and I pride myself on doing my upmost to put everyone’s mind at ease. Every wedding and special occasion is unique, and therefore every client relationship deserves as much time, attention and passion as possible so we can work together to make the big day perfect.

How do you get to know your couples before the big day?

Our coordinators have their own mobile and are on hand to call/text/whatsapp/email at anytime during your wedding journey with us, we feel this gives a lot of comfort to couples. By the end of the wedding journey we really feel like we have made lasting relationships with our brides and grooms. We seem to have the most wonderful couples that come back to visit time and time again.

What do you think makes for the perfect wedding?

Amazing food, an open bar tab, memorable entertainment and of course a beautiful ceremony where you are surrounded by your family, friends and loved ones.

What is your #1 wedding planning tip for couples?

It’s your day, so don’t be afraid to be a bit selfish when it comes to the guestlist, things like your menu choices, drink selection and seating plans.

What do you love about Bridebook?

I love how easy it is to navigate, shortlist and contact suppliers and venues. It really is like your own little black book!

What’s the most memorable wedding you’ve had?

Our first wedding was in July 2012 and since then enquiries have never stopped rolling in! Every wedding has its own special moment so it’s difficult to single out a particular wedding. Most recently being a part my sisters wedding in The Orchard Marquee was very special. It was lovely to be a guest for the day and it’s safe to say she went all out making good use of our extensive list of local supplier contacts.

Why should a couple book Red Row Estate?

As a unique venue with extensive grounds and panoramic views over our peaceful valley, the setting could hardly be more idyllic. We provide an unforgettable setting for all styles of celebration, grand or intimate, indoors or out…it will be a unique and memorable celebration.

What’s the best photo spot at Red Row Estate?

Definitely the beautiful lavender fields in full bloom.

What part of your business are you most proud of?

Our customer service to couples and guests. We pride ourselves in investing in our team to make sure we have only the best set of people to look after you on your journey with us. Our wedding team have a wealth of experience hosting weddings meaning you’re in very capable hands.

How do you feel technology is changing the industry?

Technology has transformed how we now work and we have had to fully embrace new technology during the past 18 months of Covid. It has been an essential part of improving and streamlining our customer journey from the initial enquiry to ease of booking venue viewings. Zoom calls and facetime have enabled us to continue showing couples our beautiful venue and even resulted in couples booking from as far field as Dubai after only viewing on facetime.

What is the one piece of advice you would give to couples that are currently struggling amidst the COVID-19 crisis?

Have faith, your dream day will happen despite all the setbacks and remember why you are getting married.

A huge thank you to Grace Fountain for answering our questions. Check out Red Row Estate on Bridebook!

What’s the most memorable wedding you’ve had at 41 Portland Place?

This is a hard one as we have seen so many memorable weddings! I remember a summer wedding which was hosted on the tranquil terrace which just oozes sophistication and is the perfect spot to enjoy a refreshing summer cocktail with friends & family shaded from the sun by gorgeous olive and eucalyptus trees. By night, the space transforms into a fairy light lit oasis in the city. The client opted with a relaxed family feasting BBQ style menu followed by an interactive dessert station, a chef’s favourite!

Why should a couple book 41 Portland Place?

For this, I would say actions speak louder than words and have a look at testimonials!
