Valentine’s Day is a celebration of love, which makes it a dreamy choice for a wedding. But when it comes to incorporating romantic ideas into your big day, there’s a fine line between classic and cheesy! Less is often more! That’s why we’ve put together 14 unique romantic wedding ideas inspired by Valentine’s Day, featuring real couples and our amazing Bridebook suppliers. Whether you’re planning a special Valentine’s Day wedding, or simply looking for some romantic ideas to share with your partner, we hope you’ll find plenty of inspiration here!

1. Incorporate a romantic theme

Photo © Ashley Hemsley Photography | See their Bridebook profile

Follow a heart theme as an obvious nod to Valentine’s Day in your decor, cake design and stationery. You can carry it out in all the little details, from your napkins to your icing to your invitations. To make more of a statement, consider smoke bombs, or smoke flares. They’ll add so much drama to your couple portraits, and a super fun pop to your day. This romantic shot by Ashley Hemsley Photography is a great example: “A little bit of help from the red arrows created this stunning heart smoke shape”. There are also various alternatives to hearts: love birds, cupid’s arrows, love locks, XOXOs, love knots, love letters, the infinity symbol, and love trees.

2. Create a romantic ambience with lighting

Photo © Jennifer West Photography | See their Bridebook profile

Work with your photographer, or a lighting company, to create romantic shapes with light (whether outside, or as a dramatic ceiling pattern). This shot by Jennifer West Photography is particularly striking and romantic. We love the multi-coloured neon sign and heart-shaped light trails. According to the photographer: “The evening was warm and balmy and as the music filled the air, Luke and Kirsty say it was one of the most special memories of their wedding.”

3. Recreate a scene from a famous romantic movie

Photo © Heather Bailey Photography and Film | See their Bridebook profile

Why not recreate a romantic scene from your favourite romantic movie? We love this photo, captured by Heather Bailey Photography and Film, which recalls Noah and Allie’s iconic boat ride in ‘The Notebook’. What a fun and dreamy romantic wedding idea! Though, according to the photographer herself, it was quite an anxiety-provoking shot to capture: “In reality, I’m not sure who was more anxious – my couple, who worried about capsizing the relatively small boat, or me, the photographer leaning over a high balcony with my camera just begging to fall in the water!”

4. Take inspiration from nature

Photo © John Price Photography | See their Bridebook profile

Taking inspiration from nature and animals for your wedding can be a creative and unique way to add an subtle romantic touch to your big day. Consider a romantic silhouette shot like this one captured by John Price Photography: “The bride and groom requested an evening sunset silhouette shot. I noticed two real swans posing perfectly just slightly apart – and had to edit and bring them in together to form the perfect heart.” There are many other romantic animals that can inspire a magical Valentine’s-inspired atmosphere. For example, doves and wild horses, or butterflies (which symbolise transformation), and dolphins (which embody playfulness).

5. Roll out the roses

Use rose petals in your bouquet, or consider a unique heart-shaped bouquet. You can also feature roses throughout your tablescape, or have them as wedding favours. For striking and unique floral designs that are inspired by the seasons, check out Tide Flowers. Ethical florist, Cat Allen, will personally guide you through the whole process to create the dreamiest floral displays.

6. Say it with the sweet stuff

Sweets and chocolate are among the highlights of Valentine’s Day. After all, it’s not just about the love and romance, but also the fun and indulgence! Set up a sweet buffet or dessert station at your wedding reception, like this one by Rhubarb Hospitality Collection, or go with a funfair and candyfloss theme. For fun sweet station reception ideas, consider a doughnut wall, popcorn bar, S’mores station, cupcake and cookie tower, macaron bar, or mini desert shots.

7. Say it with signage

Photo © Anesta Broad Photography | See their Bridebook profile

Celebrate the theme of love with a large LOVE sign at the entrance to your reception, or in your ballroom as a romantic backdrop to your first dance. We love this dreamy shot, captured by Anesta Broad Photography, of the happy couple dancing: “It’s the happiness of the couple, the delight of the guests in the background and the beautiful setting at Blake Hall that makes this photo feel special. It is a beautiful moment.” For something more subtle, consider dotting some smaller signs around your venue, like near the bar or the sign-in table, featuring romantic love-inspired quotes.

8. Get creative with your catering

Photo © The Full Spoon | See their Bridebook profile

Carry your Valentine’s Day theme into your food by asking your catering team to get creative with colour and shapes and finishing touches. From heart-shaped garnishes to heart-shaped skewers, to a colour palette of pinks and reds, there are so many ways to enjoy a special romantic wedding meal. What’s important is to hire wedding caterers who specialise in creating bespoke, innovative dishes. We particularly love The Full Spoon, who are experts in creating original, personal menus.

9. Create a signature cocktail

Photo © Fabulous Fizz Bar | See their Bridebook profile

Create a signature cocktail for the occasion with ingredients that are symbolic of love, like champagne and strawberries, or with known aphrodisiacs, like chocolate and chilli. Or go one further, and create little puns to accompany your cocktails, for example, “Love Potion” or ‘Cupid’s Cocktails”). This will give your drinks a romantic and whimsical vibe. For expertly hand-mixed, bespoke cocktails, we highly recommend Fabulous Fizz Bar. They’ll create a bespoke menu for you to fit the style and theme of your wedding, whether that’s Valentine’s Day or something more personal. You can even have your signature cocktails renamed to further personalise them.

10. Romanticise your wedding entertainment

Photo © Smartpicsuk Photo Booth | See their Bridebook profile

Delight your partner and guests with some Valentine’s-inspired entertainment. For example, you can exchange love notes with your partner before the wedding ceremony, or ask the Maid of Honour and Best Man to write an original love poem for the bride and groom to read out during the speeches. Other ideas include splashing out on a themed photo booth with props that are inspired by love and Valentine’s Day. We particularly love Smartpicsuk Photo Booth: in addition to your choice of background for the images, you can also choose the design and text on the prints to compliment the style and theme of your wedding and create something that is truly unique.

11. Hand out Valentines-inspired gifts

Surprise your partner with a sentimental gift like a locket or custom-made piece of jewellery before the ceremony, or treat your guests to special heart-shaped favours with a sweet note. Heart-shaped cookies and cake-pops work well, or chocolate-dipped strawberries presented in a cute bag. Quintessential Cookies & Cakes create gorgeous bespoke cookie wedding favours, that can be personalised to you and your special day. Celebration cakes, macarons, cupcakes, cake-pops and mini doughnuts are also available, and will make stylish, memorable and delicious gifts!

The Best Winter Wedding Guest Outfits

Winter weddings can be such a magical and dreamy experience. But choosing the right winter wedding outfit can be challenging as well. As a wedding guest, you want to look balance formality and style, while also staying warm and comfortable amidst cooler temperatures. To help inspire you, we’ve put together our top tips and tricks for the best winter wedding guest outfits, so you can look and feel your best this season, whatever your style or budget, and whatever the weather!

1. Dresses

Dresses with billowing sleeves, higher necklines, and longer hems are ideal choices for a winter wedding. Opt for a thicker, heavier fabric, like wool or velvet, to keep you warm. You can choose from a variety of sensible styles, from a flowing maxi dress to a form-fitting cocktail dress. The trick is to make a statement with bold prints and luxe embellishments like beading or lace detailing.

2. Suits

You can’t go wrong with a stylish suit at a winter wedding. For warmth and comfort, choose a suit made from a heavier fabric, like wool or corduroy. For a more casual look, consider a pair of dress trousers or skirt with a button-up shirt, with either a sweater or blazer. If you’re on a budget, consider renting a suit – it’s not only a cost-effective option, but also more sustainable.

3. Colours

Winter weddings are the perfect opportunity to wear warm colours in rich, jewel-like hues. Think wine and champagne tones, emerald green, ruby red, burgundy and navy blue.

4. Accessories

From scarves and shawls, to hats and gloves, winter accessories will keep you warm, while also adding a pop of colour and glamour to your outfit. Add some extra sparkle to your look with eye-catching jewellery, like a statement-necklace, earrings or a brooch.

5. Outerwear

A winter wedding always calls for a warm outer layer. For a timeless and sophisticated look, consider a classic wool coat or pea coat, which will keep you warm and complement any dress or suit underneath. For a more budget-friendly option, consider an elegant faux fur jacket. They come in a variety of styles and colours, and can be found at a fraction of the cost of a real fur jacket.

6. Footwear

Closed-toe shoes are a must for a winter wedding, whether that’s heeled boots, ankle boots or loafers. Make sure they’re comfortable enough to dance in, and will keep your feet warm and dry. If you’re on a budget, consider buying a pair of shoes in a neutral colour, like black or brown, so you can wear them with multiple outfits and on more than one occasion.

Now you’ll be properly prepped for all those winter weddings pencilled into your calendar. Whatever the weather throws at you, you’ll have a guest outfit that’s both sensible and stylish.

2023 Wedding Fashion Trends

From simple, timeless looks and plain fabrics, to chic, colourful styles with luxe embellishments, this year’s weddings are sure to be full of fashion inspiration and ideas. To get a better understanding of the latest trends and must-have looks this wedding season, we reached out to some of the top dressmakers in the industry to get their expert insights and predictions.

1. Simple styles + extra detailing

Photo © A Bridal Story | See their Bridebook profile

The simple look is in this year – from the style to the fabric. “We’re seeing lots of simple designs made from luxurious mikado, satin or crepe,” comments Jo Maloney from A Bridal Story. “Less is more is definitely going to be a key bridal trend.” Elizabeth from Elizabeth Kate Bridal is also noticing more “plain wedding dresses and plain fabrics such as mikado and satin.”

At the same time, bridal fashion is featuring plenty of luxe accessories and detailing. Fross from Fross Wedding Collections Ltd is seeing a trend towards simple gowns accessorised. “For example, lots of our brides love to add bows to their satin gowns.” According to our dressmakers, the most popular fashion element this year is bows, followed by pearls, then feathers, and finally beads. Zera Rowell from Aime Moi Encore says they are “seeing a demand for simpler designs where extra details can be featured such as big bows and lots of pearls, flowers and head pieces. Flower appliques and colour are also very popular!”

2. Colour, colour, colour

Photo © Heartfelt Vintage | See their Bridebook profile

Wedding dresses with colour are also en vogue. Over half of the dressmakers we spoke to are seeing wedding dresses in alternative colours to the traditional bridal white. Kate Ashwell from Heartfelt Vintage says they are ‘seeing a huge uplift in the number of requests for colourful dresses’. Donna from DM Bridal Accessories also emphasises seeing ‘dresses with colour’.

As for bridesmaids’ dresses, the most popular colours this year are champagne, earthy tones, and greens (both emerald and sage). Dusty rose, blush pink, dusty blue and navy blue are also trending, particularly as we move into the season of late winter/early spring.

3. Statement dresses + luxe embellishments

Photo © Couture & Tiaras Bridal | See their Bridebook profile

At the other end from simple styles, many of our dressmakers are seeing dramatic statement dresses. Jo Maloney from A Bridal Story comments that “big and bold designs are also trending with dramatic skirts, necklines and sleeve’, while Margo Brittain from Margo Chamberlain Millinery is seeing “puff sleeves, long trains, maximalist styles, and large flower corsages.”

Princess skirts, long or floating trains, long veils, even capes, are in high demand. Kate Ashwell from Heartfelt Vintage attributes this to the popularity of Netflix’s Bridgerton: “The Bridgerton-inspired trends keep on coming!” Jekaterina Domnych from Gold Needle Ltd speaks of an “abundance of uber-chic inspo in the 2023 wedding dress trends, from dramatic ball gowns to colorful wedding gowns to luxe embellishments like bows, feathers, ruffles, gloves, capes, scooped and strapless necklines, high-low hemline ball gowns with over-the-top tiered skirts, decadent fabrics and beads, lingerie-inspired slip wedding dresses.” She also adds that “in 2023 we’ll be seeing more statement veils with 3D elements, sparkles, flowers, prints and pops of colour. Fashion is stepping away from plain tulle and making the veil its own masterpiece and something that is able to express the bride’s style and personality.”

4. Long gloves/long sleeves

Photo © Aime Moi Encore | See their Bridebook profile

Continuing the Bridgerton theme, the trend towards long, elegant gloves is making a comeback in 2023: our dressmakers unanimously report long gloves, from long tulle gloves to long opera gloves. Amy Money from Amy Money Millinery also comments on the trend of long sleeves, and even detachable sleeves for greater versatility and flexibility throughout the day.

5. Splits/slits

Photo © The White Room | See their Bridebook profile

“Split dresses are very on trend”, Zoey Jayaweera from The White Room of Minchinhampton reports. Duduzile Sibanda from Couture & Tiaras Bridal agrees: “We are selling a lot of dresses with a slit.” Split wedding dresses are gaining in popularity over the years because they offer a modern and elegant look, while also being comfortable to dance and move around in. Not to mention that a slit can show off a pair of beautiful shoes!

6. Detachable skirts/multi dresses

Photo © Fross Wedding Collections Ltd | See their Bridebook profile

Many of our dressmakers are seeing a demand for detachable skirts or separate overskirts, as brides increasingly look for versatility and flexibility when it comes to choosing their wedding dress. Fross from Fross Wedding Collections Ltd notes seeing “brides wanting two gowns, daytime and evening looks, or gowns with detachable skirts to create two looks in one!”

For bridesmaids, multi dresses (a.k.a. convertible dresses or infinity dresses) are all the rage. These dresses can be worn in different ways, so bridesmaids can choose the most flattering style for their body type and taste. They can also be worn again and again long after the wedding, making them both practical and cost-effective. Jekaterina Domnych from Gold Needle Ltd lists a range of flexible styles for bridesmaids: “mismatching bridesmaids dresses, cowl neck bridesmaids dresses, velvet bridesmaids dresses, convertible bridesmaids dresses.”

7. More individuality/non-traditional dress

Photo © Dressarte Paris | See their Bridebook profile

More and more brides are opting to break the mould and wear a non-traditional wedding dress that more truly reflects their own personal style and preferences. Lisa Carrington from Lisa Carrington Couture summarises this trend: “More and more brides are turning to individuality – bespoke instead of mass-produced. I feel trends heading more to personal tastes and not what everyone else is doing, so possibly more quirky and adventurous details will come through.” Nathalie Neuilly from Dressarte Paris agrees: “[There is] great interest towards non-traditional wedding outfits and colours (like black and green in particular)”.

8. Sustainable options

Photo © Love It Again Bridal | See their Bridebook profile

Sustainability is increasingly become a key concern for today’s couples, according to many of our dressmakers. Eve Mannion from Love It Again Bridal has observed that “more couples are becoming eco-conscious about their wedding choices”. Wendy Hook from Vintage Adornments agrees that the eco fashion trend continues to grow with more and more brides opting for sustainable choices when it comes to choosing a dress: “There’s a real move towards more sustainable choices for both cost and environmental reasons. Vintage and nostalgic themes are also having a real influence after the years of the pandemic and then the fuel and economic crises – couples are keen to harken back to happier times and evoke that in their wedding styling.” Popular sustainable options include choosing a dress made from organic, natural or recycled materials; renting a wedding dress; or opting for a vintage or second-hand dress.

Whether you’re a bride-to-be, a bridesmaid, or simply a fashion-savvy wedding guest, these styles, colours and fabrics are sure to make a statement at any wedding this year. You’ve now got all the inspiration and ideas you need to start putting together your own unique look!

How to Save Money on a Wedding Dress

Whether you’ve dreamed of yourself in a beautiful, flowing white dress since you were five-years-old, or you’ve only started to even consider it post-ring, the bridal dress is often a major component of a wedding. There are so many styles available that searching for and trying on dresses can be a long, fun and exciting journey for both the bride and the entire bridal party.

Many wedding dresses are made with premium materials and involve complex and intricate designs. As a result, the perfect dress naturally comes with a corresponding premium price tag. In the UK, the average amount spent on a wedding dress is £1,300, though it can often be double or even triple this. When you consider that the average cost of a wedding is £20,775, this may sound like a lot, but it’s proportionate with the cost of many other professional wedding services, including photographers and videographers.

However, there are plenty of ways to save money on a wedding dress. In this post, we’re going to explore the tips and tricks you can use to help you stick to your budget while still getting to wear a gorgeous gown on your big day.

Why are wedding dresses so expensive?

Photo © Kate Joseph Bridal | See their Bridebook profile

Wedding dresses come with a premium price tag for several reasons:

  • They’re made using very high-quality materials
  • They can come with complex and intricate adornments
  • They’re often handmade by a highly skilled and experienced dressmaker
  • They’re highly customised both in terms of style and fit
  • It’s tempting to choose a well-known, high-end designer to mark the occasion
  • They usually involve tailored service and consultations to get it just right

As well as these, wedding dresses have great sentimental value and are massively important to many brides. As a result, many brides-to-be are willing to pay premium prices to get the dress of their dreams. After all, this isn’t any old day. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime celebration, which deserves an outfit like no other.

Do you need to wear a bridal dress on your wedding day?

Photo © Oui Madame Bridal Atelier | See their Bridebook profile

While a white dress is traditionally worn by a bride in western countries specifically, you by no means have to wear one on your own wedding day. What you wear at your wedding is down to you, the style and theme of your wedding, and any religious traditions you may wish to stick to.

A white dress may be what many brides choose to wear, but there are plenty who don’t and opt for an alternative instead. Examples of these include:

  • A non-traditional dress, which may feature colours or be black
  • Religious or cultural attire, such as a saree, kimono or hanbok
  • Trouser suits or jumpsuits, which are stylish and modern but still elegant
  • A two-piece ensemble, such as a skirt and top

Many non-bridal dresses can also be expensive, but are often far more affordable than traditional dresses worn by brides in the West.

12 ways to save money on your wedding dress

If you’re keen to wear a traditional dress on your big day, there are plenty of ways to save money if you’re willing to compromise a little. Below are 12 ways you can make a saving when buying your wedding dress. And for more tips, check out our ultimate guide to saving money on your wedding.

1. Browse affordable designer ranges

Photo © Catherine Blades Couture | See their Bridebook profile

Have you always wanted a stunning Vera Wang gown to get married in but aren’t sure your budget can stretch that far? Well, did you know that most wedding dress designers have a cheaper line available at bargain prices? That means you can go to your favourite designer and not have to break the bank to buy a dress. And for reference, for Vera Wang, it’s the White collection.

2. Look out for sample sales

When it comes to gorgeous designer gowns, boutiques and designers themselves will host sample sales at the end of seasons. You can find some absolute gems hidden among the endless racks; so as long as you’re willing to forego the typical bridal boutique shopping experience and service, they’re definitely worth it. Contrary to what some believe, the dresses are rarely permanently damaged – although they sometimes come with minor easily repairable flaws. In sample sales, all sales are final, which means no returns – so inspect your potential dress carefully for any imperfections before you buy.

3. Check out some local charity shops

Photo © Bridal Reloved | See their Bridebook profile

Why not consider a preloved gown from a local charity shop? Remember, most brides will only wear their dress once and only for half a day, so the majority of the dresses you’ll find in a charity shop will be as good as new. It’s also a lovely sentiment to wear a dress that’s previously given so much joy to a happy couple. The only thing to bear in mind is that it’s unlikely you’ll find a dress that fits you perfectly, so you’ll have to take it for alterations and be prepared to compromise.

4. Buy an off-the-rack dress

Photo © Lucy Hart Bridal | See their Bridebook profile

A great tip to save some pennies is to buy a dress that’s made ready to wear. It may need a little bit of tweaking, which can ramp up the cost, but the price of an off-the-hanger dress will generally be much lower than that of a made-to-measure gown. This approach can also save time, as it doesn’t require many months of creation and fittings. That said, if the creation and fitting experience is important to you, and you want a bespoke gown, you can’t expect to pay cheap off-the-rack prices. That level of service, and quality, is naturally going to cost. So it’s important to weigh up what’s most important to you when shopping around.

5. Shop vintage

Photo © Fairytale Occasions | See their Bridebook profile

If you’re having a vintage-themed wedding, vintage shops are great places to find stunning dresses in a great variety of styles. In fact, you might not even buy a dress that was intended for a wedding at all. White Gatsby-esque evening dresses can look just as impressive as a specially made gown. When browsing, make sure to check the dresses for signs of wear and tear (especially on the hem and the armpits) and think of any potential alterations you might want to make ahead of buying. Then, you can put your bridesmaids in dresses of a complementary style.

6. Call in some favours

Photo © TH&TH Bridesmaids | See their Bridebook profile

This one might be a bit of a stretch, but if you happen to know a fantastic seamstress or dressmaker, you’re one lucky bride. It’s sometimes cheaper to have a dress made by a seamstress (especially if they’re not that experienced), and even more so if you ask for mates’ rates.

7. Shop on the high street

Photo © Lisa Lyons Bridal | See their Bridebook profile

Many high-street retailers, like John Lewis and Next, have a beautiful range of bridal dresses that are fabulous, elegant and – most importantly, if you’re on a budget – affordable. Dresses from popular high-street brands can cost as low as £60, but make sure you shop early in case you need to take it for minor alterations. And again, weigh up your priorities, and manage your expectations. A high-street dress is unlikely to rival a bespoke custom-made designer dress, but if you’re on a budget, may be the best option for you personally.

8. Consider renting a dress

Photo © Wilden Bride London | See their Bridebook profile

It might not be something you immediately think of as an option, but did you know that, along with wedding suits, you can also rent wedding dresses? If you’re excited to wear a gorgeous, flowing dress but can’t stretch your budget enough to cover the cost, renting can get you into that perfect bridal gown. The only downside is that you’ll have to give it back, so won’t be able to hold on to it for sentimental reasons. Plus, just make sure you’re aware of the return policy, because if you return it late, the fees can sting.

9. Choose a dress with a minimalist style

Photo © Laura Loves Bridal | See their Bridebook profile

As we’ve already covered, one of the reasons wedding dresses can be so expensive is because of the high-quality materials and craftsmanship that go into creating them. So, one great way to lower the cost is by choosing a dress with a simple or minimalist design. The fewer intricate details there are, the less work it will generally take, which can help keep costs down.

10. Hire an up-and-coming local seamstress

Photo © Sew Handy | See their Bridebook profile

Sometimes it can be more affordable to hire a seamstress – particularly if it’s a seamstress with less experience. Of course, a seamstress with decades of experience will produce a fantastic dress, but it will come at a price. By using a less-experienced and local seamstress, you’ll get a beautiful bespoke dress but not have to pay as much. Also, if they’re local (and outside of London) you won’t have to pay for shipping or as many travel costs.

11. Shop online

Photo © HEMYCA | See their Bridebook profile

Online retailers, such as ASOS, can have a wide range of dresses to suit a selection of tastes, styles and budgets. The cost of a dress will often start around £100, but if you keep your eye out for a sale you might be able to pick up a stunning dress for as much as half this amount. The main risk is that you might not like it as much in person as you did when you saw the images, so make sure you know the returns policy before purchasing.

And again, the quality is not going to match a custom-made ensemble, in the same way that the experience of browsing online will be vastly different to trying on dresses in an independent boutique with your bridal party. Part of the service involved in choosing a bridal boutique is getting fitted by a professional with years of experience and benefiting from their expert advice through tailored, one-on-one consultations. But if a finding a cheap and serviceable dress is your only priority, this is of course a perfectly reasonable option.

12. Sell your dress after your wedding

Photo © Sarah Willard | See their Bridebook profile

Know you absolutely want to wear a certain dress, which means that renting, borrowing or buying online are out of the question? You can still splurge and buy an extravagant dress, because there’s always the option of selling your dress once you’re done. Unless you’re particularly sentimental or want to pass it on as an heirloom, sites such as Vinted, Stillwhite or even Facebook Marketplace are great. You more than likely won’t get your money back, but you could still get a huge chunk of it, which you could then reinvest into your honeymoon.

La Perla’s Guide to Gorgeous Wedding Lingerie

Written by La Perla

La Perla is a luxury fashion house with over 60 years of experience in the fashion industry, and regarded as experts in luxury women clothing including lingerie.

Everything that La Perla embodies aligns perfectly with the wonderful world of weddings: elegant, precious, and with just a hint of surprise.

Lingerie holds special meaning for every woman and luxury wedding lingerie is the perfect way to make that magic moment even more magical with amazing pieces that are just as special as the day itself.

So if you know you want to treat both yourself and your partner with some jaw-dropping lingerie, La Perla is here to get you finding the perfect pieces.

Bridebook.co.uk - lingerie la perla robe

The Lingerie Beneath the Dress

There are no fixed rules when it comes to choosing what to wear beneath your wedding dress. It’s the dress that steals the scene and generally it’s important that your lingerie is the same colour, preferably in smooth, lightweight fabrics, such as tulle.

Essential lines and a soft satin sheen characterise the bandeau bra and stretch silk briefs from the La Perla Silk Flair collection. The removable straps make this bra perfect under a dress with full décolleté.

The La Perla Shape Allure garments are for all those women who adore more romantic pieces. They have been made with special Lycra® Beauty yarn and Leavers lace inserts to create a seductive shaping effect.

The Contemporary Trousseau

The trousseau is an idea that has to be brought up-to-date with modern times and thought of as a set of precious garments that accompany the bride into a new stage of her life.

A truly elegant trousseau should always feature some matching lingerie and nightwear, like the coordinated pairings of lingerie and nightdresses and babydolls and robes created by La Perla.

A bride should treat herself to a La Perla Maison set, one of the iconic collections from the La Perla brand which combines the allure of silk satin with the sumptuousness of the floral embroidery that is hand finished using the Italian frastaglio technique.

Keep your trousseau fun and flirty by picking pieces that mix materials and textures

Lingerie is a Girl’s Best Friend

A bridal shower is a truly special event, particularly for the bride’s friends. It is a chance for them to express their joy at sharing such an important time in her life.

It is also the perfect time for a gift from one woman to another; something special such as a slip, one of the most sensual and on-trend lingerie garments.

La Perla offers a wide range in fine Leavers lace with floral decoration, tulle which hides and reveals, and flowing silk satin. Something extra special: create an exclusive bridal wish list dedicated to your closest friends at a La Perla boutique.

Look for pieces with modern designs and accents to add a sense of occasion

…Something blue

It’s always best to respect traditions, even if we are at the start of the third millennium. Creativity and a touch of elegance are essential. La Perla offers a jewelled garment to respect the “something blue” rule.

The La Perla Made to Measure suspender strap in silk satin can be personalised with gold hooks and a string of sapphires. A unique lucky charm that can be transformed into a bracelet for a precious keepsake from the big day.

Don’t forget your something blue!

B for Bride, B for Bustier

Romantic, seductive and ultra-feminine. The bustier is one of those garments that all women should have in their wardrobe, and a true symbol of La Perla style. Every bride must have at least one bustier in her honeymoon suitcase.

What other garment is so versatile and ideally suited to creating a multitude of day and evening looks? Those who are truly romantic can choose an iconic model such as the La Perla Heritage bustier in Cluny lace with fine openwork, strings in silk satin and a front fastening with metal hooks that evoke a vintage feel.

True addicts that want to wear a bustier under their wedding dress have the special La Perla Frames model in transparent tulle which enhances the figure.

Not ready to take the plunge and wear the trousers yet, but still want to go non-traditional? Then you’re in luck as short dresses take center stage. The best part about short dresses is that you get to show off your gorgeous shoes.

4) Tropical

The tropical theme is making quite the splash this year and we couldn’t be more excited. Tropical themes are perfect for colour-obsessed couples and it’s near impossible not to have a great time in paradise.

5) Healthy Canapés

Canapés by Blissful Basil

We’re all too familiar with those overdone wedding canapés and menus. Lucky for us, a sure fire to keep your guests grateful is to keep your canapés light and fresh. Not only is healthy, delicious food super on trend at the moment, but it keeps your guests from getting too sluggish or filled up before the wedding breakfast.

6) Dark Wedding Dresses

Admittedly not for the faint of heart, but if you want to pull it off it looks so incredibly gorgeous. We say go for it!

8) Industrial Venues

By IZO Photography

We’re lucky to live in a country with so many beautiful and historic wedding venues, but if you want to take it up a notch, why not opt for a less traditional venue? Industrial spaces are perfect for couples who want to add their personal stamps on a relatively blank canvas while still keeping a stylish edge.

9) Colourful Wedding Shoes

By Tiffany Hughes Photography

In line with both trend 2 and 3, colourful wedding shoes are now more in than ever! Whether they’re your ‘something blue’ or rainbow coloured, this is your day to show off killer shoes. Sorry dress, but it’s not all about you anymore! Be sure to get more shoe tips from Bridebook’s expert contributor Jimmy Choo.

10) Unplugged Weddings

One of our personal favourites. While we all love a wedding hashtag, the last thing you want is for you or your guests to be so pre-occupied with snapping pics and snapchat that they miss being present in what is one of the most important days of your life.

11) Rose Gold Engagement Rings

Rose gold has been hot in the fashion world for a while now, and we’re excited to see it finally making it into the wedding world! We all know how flattering rose gold can be on certain skin tones, so we don’t blame you if you’re excited to have a chance to wear it every day.

12) Dresses with…wait for it… POCKETS!

Talking of glamour, another theme that is set to be hot this season is old school hollywood glamour. Boho brides are old news now, and who can resist a bit of show?

15) Foliage and Herb Bouquets

Another great trend that is both stylish and cost-efficient. With looser bouquets becoming more and more popular, foliage and herbs have also started making their stand by adding beautiful lush colours to any bouquet.

16) Two Piece Dresses

We can’t seem to get enough of all these dress trends! This trend is perfect for those of you who want something a little different but still maintaining that touch of femininity. We especially love this trend when paired with a full skirt on the bottom.

17) Tiaras

Talking of femininity – what’s more princess-like than a tiara? Flower crowns are out and the more refined tiara is most definitely in. Now you can really complete your fairytale wedding from head to toe.

18) Gold

Another trend that is steering us away from boho and more towards glam. But the best thing about this trend is that you can embrace it as little or as much as you want. Whether it’s the staple of your theme or just incorporated with subtle accents, it ‘s sure to look great!

19) Pink Champagne

By Annamarie Akins

Our very own Founder and CEO, Hamish Shephard (certified wedding planner and on his own wedding planning journey!) is tipping off pink champagne as his top trend of this year’s wedding season. Cue pink champagne for the ultimate final touch!

Your Guide To Choosing the Perfect Bridesmaid Dresses

Who better to guide you through the bridesmaid dress choosing process than the bridesmaid’s favourite? We’ve called on the wonderful pros at twobirds Bridesmaid to share their top 5 tips on how to keep you and your bridesmaids happy while completing your wedding party look.

bridebook.co.uk twobirds steel dresses in different styles
Universally flattering styles with endless ways to wrap equals happy bridesmaids!

Choosing the perfect bridesmaid dresses for your favourite girls can be very stressful.  With different skin tones and body shapes to cater for it might feel like an impossible task!  Luckily, at twobirds, we like to keep things as stress free as possible… We understand that every woman is different so our gorgeous range of customizable multiway dresses offer the perfect solution to ensure happy bridesmaids and – essentially – a happy bride.

Colour Scheme

It’s easy to get overwhelmed when it comes to finalising your colour scheme and if – like many brides-to-be – you’re struggling to choose it may help to consider other elements of your wedding as a starting point.  If your venue has a strong colour palette or your partner’s outfit has a dominant colour, that may inform your choice.

Be sure to keep in mind every aspect of your day when picking your bridesmaid dress colour scheme

Go shopping

Why not make a day of it and gather your favourite girls together for a day of trying bridesmaid dresses, a lovely lunch and then finish off the day with a cocktail in your favourite bar?  Dress shopping should be a fun experience so do your research before you go and make sure the dresses you have your heart set on are within your budget.

Any excuse to spend a day with your girls and some bubbly!

Mix & Match

A lot of couples are choosing a tonal mix of dress colours for their bridesmaids which can look really striking on the big day.  Tie it all together with the bouquets or ribbons for a cohesive and glamorous look.

bridebook.co.uk-twobirds multiple dress colours
With the extensive range of colours available, it’s easy to embrace the tonal trend

Flattering Fit

One size most definitely does not fit all and it’s tricky to find a structured dress to suit every body shape.  Multiway dresses are a great option as each bridesmaid can choose their preferred neckline and wear the dress exactly as they wish – subject to bride’s approval, of course! twobirds dresses cover sizes UK 4-24, can be wrapped in endless different ways and we use a huge amount of premium quality, luxurious fabric to ensure a flattering and feminine silhouette.

Win instant points with your bridesmaids by letting them pick their most flattering neckline

Hair & Make up

Lots of couples decide to give the bridesmaids freedom when it comes to hair and make up and – depending on the chosen neckline – hair can be up or down.  For example, an off-centre fishtail braid looks amazing with a one-shoulder style while a high ballerina bun will show off a backless dress perfectly.

Remember the hairstyle can be just as important as the dress!

Introducing Rupert Sanderson’s Stunning New Bridal Collection

Style mavens – we have some very exciting news for you. Legendary British shoe designer, Rupert Sanderson, has now added a gorgeous bridal shoe collection. Too good to be true? We thought so too! Luckily for us though, the Bridebook team were invited to his flagship London store to see it for ourselves. The collection is everything we could expect from the royal and celebrity favourite – and more! From elegant and classic, to bold and stand-out – this collection has everything a bride could possibly want.

www.bridebook.co.uk-rupert-sanderson
The Calice shoe in a gorgeous nude satin – a Bridebook team favourite!

Rupert Sanderson’s style ethos is one many brides can relate to and appreciate, particularly for their wedding day. Rupert’s Head of Marketing, Rosanna Hill, described to us how, “with Rupert it’s all about less is more, focusing on lengthening the leg, and making the woman feel confident and sexy at the same time.” One of our favourite pieces from the collection that perfectly epitomizes this ethos is his Floria shoe (pictured below). Its unique way of framing the foot, acting both as a a sandal but also providing graphic coverage over the foot, makes it both light and airy, as well as having a raw edge, giving it a pronounced individuality.

www.bridebook.co.uk-rupert-sanderson
The striking Floria shoe in champagne laminiate

One of our favourite things about Rupert’s bridal collection was his attention to the brides themselves. As much as brides want to stun on their wedding day, one always has to remember that you’ll be on your feet most of the day, so comfort and practicality is key. Rupert incorporates practicality so seamlessly into his collection, it would be easy to miss. From different heel heights to personal delivery of any Rupert Sanderson shoe to partnering dress boutiques Alice Temperly and Bruce Oldfield – Rupert has you covered. Hearing that Rupert is particularly known for bridging the gap between sexy and comfortable only made us want to play bride and try on the shoes for ourselves even more!

The timeless Pinka shoe in ivory satin

It is safe to say that Rupert Sanderson’s gorgeous bridal collection is now one of our favourites. Whether you want to keep it minimal and classic, like with the Pinka, or go bold, like with Rupert’s personal favourite and 50s inspired Cassandra, you are sure to not only find a shoe that fits your personal style, but a shoe that enhances your style to a new level of fashionable.

Rupert Sanderson in his design studio

What drew you to put together a formal bridal collection?

To be honest, the whole process happened quite organically. I always had several bridal styles that were incorporated into my classic collection. However, I noticed that a lot of our customers that came into our stores were looking for wedding shoes.  One idea led to another and I decided to design a full bridal collection.

What is your favourite thing about designing bridal shoes in particular?

Whether it’s bridal, my classic line or seasonal collections, for me, it’s all about keeping things simple and designing by my “less is more” philosophy. I’ve always had a passion for creating the perfect pair of shoes by focusing on cut and line, and using the best quality materials. I love designing silhouettes that give a woman confidence.

What kind of bride wears Rupert Sanderson shoes?

I don’t believe in fixating to a specific type of bride. I like to think my collection is rather versatile and that my designs will speak to a variety of brides. The brides who wear my shoes will have their own story to tell. The most important is that they feel confident, comfortable and beautiful in a pair of my shoes.

What is your number 1 planning tip for brides and grooms?

Invest in a great pair of Rupert Sanderson shoes and the rest will happen naturally! A beautiful and comfy pair of shoes will take you through the big day, and you can wear them after the wedding.

House of Ollichon on How To Be A Dress-Less Bride

Here at Bridebook we love all things new and exciting; whether it’s our incredible budgeting tool (if we do say so ourselves), the naked cake trend taking the world by storm, or #welfies – the more it pushes the envelope the better! So when we heard about House of Ollichon, we knew we wanted to hear more. House of Ollichon is redefining how we think about bridal fashion by offering the modern bride a fashionable and more practical alternative to the traditional wedding dress. Read on to learn more about how to own being a “dress-less bride”:

bridebook.co.uk model wearing jumpsuit lying down
Courtesy of House of Ollichon

House of Ollichon was launched just six months ago (yes, we’re still babies!) to bridge the gap for fashion forward brides between the big dress and the high street offerings. The collection includes luxury bridal jumpsuits and pretty but trendy two pieces. As far as we know, we are the only bridal collection to exist without a dress in sight! After my struggle to find something for my own wedding at Islington Town Hall (I didn’t want a dress but something that pushed my bridal boundaries); House of Ollichon was born. Wedding trends are changing rapidly, there are so many weddings now that are more of a party than a big ceremony and like mine, some end up in the pub! Imagine a huge dress down the local!

The Jumpsuit Bride

Does a dress simply seem too much fuss? Many women out there desperately want to don the trousers for their wedding day and so they jolly well should! Women’s tastes have evolved beyond the traditional ‘meringue’ stereotype and now we have the confidence and individuality to ‘dress’ in trousers. Until now, we just haven’t had that many options!

Our beloved English weather!

Imagine if it rains, imagine if you have to drag your dress through puddles or hitch it up round your ankles to avoid them; kind of ruins the look right? Jumpsuits have this magical power to hover above puddles and delete this concern from your otherwise graceful arrival.

Love your shoes?

Then don’t hide them under a million skirt layers, you can finally have your wedding shoes on show!

In the mood for dancing…

The biggest annoyance from my wedding was the fact that once the party started, my dress was no longer my new BFF. It hindered my moves so much (maybe this was a good thing), I was carrying the train around all night, I still have photos of it draped over my brother’s shoulders as it was even in his way! Once I’d adopted that s*d it moment, I knew there was no more www.preloved.com cash back for me… the bottom was greyer than a winter’s morning, the beading dangling off and beautiful lace totally shredded. Embrace trousers and avoid the dress- heartache!

That toilet moment.

For anyone who thinks weeing in a jumpsuit is a pain, try it in a wedding dress; jumpsuits win every time. And, you don’t need an assistant!

Post wedding hang ups…

The day is done and now you need a metre wide space in the cupboard for a dress you’ll never wear again. Jumpsuits (even white ones!) can be re-worn, re-loved, and ensure you keep your day alive without ever offending another bride!

A four day wedding? Why not!

With wedding celebrations overseas spanning across long weekends, there are so many more outfit opportunities for the cocktail, brunch, and registry office ceremony before the big bash. Do you really want to wear a dress every time?

Pantone’s Guide to the Spring Colours of 2016

Ready for a colourful Spring wedding?

Yes, we know that we are stuck in the middle of winter. But let’s turn a blind eye to the drop in temperature and look on the bright time of the year: Spring. And in terms of wedding decoration one thing is sure: It will be colourful – but soft. Our colour expert and trend forecaster Pantone Color Institute has recently named the top 10 Spring trend colours. With Buttercup and Peach Echo included, the bride will be spoiled for choice. And of course, we want to share the entire colour palette with you. Enjoy!

bridebook.co.uk-pantone-executive-director portrait
Pantone’s Executive Director Leatrice Eiseman

Colours of the Year: Rose Quartz and Serenity

Always included in the Spring’s Fashion Color Report is the Pantone Colour of the Year. For 16 years the Pantone Color Institute has been annually selecting the Colour of the Year, a colour that reflects the global Zeitgeist. “What we do is try to read the pulse of the public,” says Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute. Therefore, a colour expert team led by Eiseman literally comb the world looking for new colour influences. And this year for the first time in history, Pantone has decided to shake things up and give us not one, but two Colours of the Year: Rose Quartz Pantone 13–1520 and Serenity Pantone 15-3919. As its name suggests, Rose Quartz is a gentle pink pastel tone that conveys compassion and composure. Serenity, as a pastel blue tone, comforts with a calming effect bringing feelings of respite and relaxation even in turbulent times.  According to Eiseman the two colours reflect well being, order and tranquillity: “With the whole greater than its individual parts, joined together Serenity and Rose Quartz demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace.”

And those pastel pink and soft blue are true wedding must haves: Their pastel transparency can be used in the selection of fantastic accessories to the wedding. Invitations, menu cards, flowers, room and table decorations can be optimally designed in the Colours of the Year. As an idea: Serenity can be drawn as a sky-blue string through the entire areas or as a background colour of the invitations. For those who like romance will immediately take the Rose Quartz flowery embroidery ideas on the tablecloth to their heart. Add silver for some splash and sparkle.

Behind the scenes

The Pantone Fashion Color Report launches traditionally on the first day of New York Fashion Week and presents the ten most important trend colours of women’s and men’s fashion for the upcoming year, which the designers are using in their upcoming collections. As a tribute to the beauty of natural resources the colours of this year serve as a vehicle to promote relaxation, curiosity and exploration. “Yet with our culture still surrounded by so much uncertainty, we are continuing to yearn for balance by incorporating those softer shades that offer a sense of calm and relaxation,” explains Eiseman. “The colour palettes of this season transport us to a happier, sunnier place where we feel free to express a wittier version of our real selves.” The designers were inspired by the contrast of urban design and by vegetation. This results in surprising colour combinations. The collections remind of architecture and travel and bring a sense of nostalgia with it. Designers took for example inspirations from the destination Cuba to play with courageous colour statements and coupling these vibrant hues with quieting, classic and more natural tones. But here is no clear difference between the colour palette for men and women – Unisex is trend:

Q & A With Phillipa Lepley, Legendary British Wedding Dress Designer

There is no wedding dress designer that can equal the timeless elegance and sophistication of Phillipa Lepley‘s designs. There is something so undeniably irresistible about the classic silhouettes, the endless attention to  detail, and the flawless tailoring.

It is no wonder that Bridebook can barely contain the excitement of having the chance to share with you this fabulous Q & A with Phillipa herself. Packed full of insight and guidance for brides embarking on their bespoke dress journey, as well as stunning photos of Phillipa at work and her dresses, you will be sure to enjoy yourself reading this one!

What is it that drew you to bridalwear in particular, and what is your favourite thing about designing wedding dresses?

I am particularly drawn to and passionate about bridal-wear as I am able to work with corsetry, embellishment and fine feminine detail so closely, which I absolutely love. Both my grandmothers were passionate at sewing and making so I picked up a lot from them at an early age about fabrics and sewing. I was always making things and loved art and crafts.

After studying Fashion Design at the London College of Fashion I was fortunate enough to be accepted onto an apprenticeship with an established wedding dress designer based in Holland Park. One year later I launched my own business.

Your style is known for its timelessness – what defines a wedding dress or style as timeless?

We focus on finding the right shape and style for the individual, rather than following fashion trends too closely. If the dress is exactly right for the bride, really defining the figure beautifully with a fabulous fit, in clean simple lines it will stand the test of time. Quite simply, a dress that will age well. You will be looking at your wedding photos forever so you need a frock to stand the test of time.

What is the most challenging part of designing wedding dresses?

The most challenging part is finding the time to bring all of my ideas to life! I have so many ideas, because I am inspired every day by the beautiful brides I meet.

Is the fitting process altered or affected by the fabrics, and if so how? Are certain fabrics more difficult to work with?

Yes – but with such experienced seamstresses, we manage to make light work of the various silk fabrics. Plain, satin dresses are incredibly difficult to make so that they fit well around the shoulder area. I am quite OCD about this and won’t rest until that ‘spray-on’ effect has been achieved perfectly accentuating every curve, with no seems or folds.

What are some things brides should keep in mind regarding the fitting process when choosing certain fabrics?

No matter which dress a bride chooses, she will first of all attend a measuring appointment where an expert technician will see her in the sample shape, taking all the measurements as well as a visual rendition of posture. From this information, the pattern cutter will create a paper pattern, and then a calico toile will be made.

The calico toile is a mock-up of the dress, which is fitted to the bride’s body to ascertain the most accurate fit. This is fine tuned at the next fitting before the silk fabric itself is cut. More than one toile fitting is often needed to achieve the precise level of fit Phillipa Lepley dresses require.

The calico toile “first draft” of the dress ensures every bride’s dress accentuates their figure perfectly

How long before the wedding do you recommend a bride should start her wedding dress fittings? And when is the best time for the final dress fitting?

I would recommend you start the process of looking for your dress 6-9 months before your wedding. I feel that it is important to have an idea of how you want your day to look first, so that the dress fits in with this, so if you have already chosen your venue that is helpful.

My team of seamstresses like to have 6 months to work on a couture dress, however we can turn around a dress in two weeks if we really need to – I never like to turn away a bride! The whole process should be fun though, so start soon, take your time and enjoy every moment! Couture bespoke is a wonderful experience.

What essentials should a bride bring to her wedding dress fittings?

Tights (I personally don’t like bare legs in photos, when you are being thrown around on the dance floor!), shoes with a size heel you are comfortable in and some discrete, and comfortable knickers. Once you have chosen your wedding jewellery you can bring that along too, but usually brides decide on that later on, and they often bring all their accessories to their final few fittings.

Who should brides bring?

It is lovely to bring bridesmaids or family members, however I often suggest that brides come on their own to their very first appointment. That way they can make up their own mind on what they personally like, before being too influenced by other people’s opinions. There are plenty of opportunities to bring people along either to have a second try-on, or to the fittings.

When buying a dress that’ll need to be altered, what are key factors brides should remember?

Be sure to go to a skilled, expert seamstress because the fit makes all the difference. – someone who really has experience with corsetry and fine silks is key.

What are your recommendations on how to handle sudden weight change in the run up to a wedding?

Fittings are very regular towards the end of the couture process, so changes in weight (even very last minute!) are not a problem – – something we are very used to.

What budgeting tips can you recommend to brides in the wedding dress budget?

Brides often ask what they should splurge and save on and I always say to them that if the dress is perfectly fitted people won’t be looking anywhere else!

Start looking for your perfect wedding dress at least 6-9 months in advance to ensure you find “the one” and have time to make any necessary alterations

Do you have some wedding planning tips for brides to be?

Don’t be overwhelmed by the search process. You need to feel relaxed and open-minded right from the start. You will be invited to try on as many dresses as possible, including those that don’t immediately jump out at you. Leave any pre-conceived ideas outside the door as wild cards can often be ‘the one’!

Consider adding your own special touches. The lining of the gown could be embroidered with the date of your wedding, or your initials and those of your intended. A special piece of jewellery could be incorporated in to the dress and you could wear a family veil, tiara, or keep sake.

A slight change to a gown for the evening is on-trend. A shrug, button-backed top or bolero could be removed leaving either a strapless dress or different straps. A belt could be added, removed or changed. For a winter wedding a fur shrug could be removed, or a change from a veil to a tulle stole could be incorporated into a summer wedding look.

A silk tulle veil will frame the final look adding romance and mystery. The right veil will complement the gown, echoing detail with a hand worked lace edge or a splash of sparkle. Or a clean satin bias binding can offer a crisp clean finish and really enhance the look.

Whether opting for a couture gown or not, choose one that is timeless; it can be ‘modern’ but it needs to age well and stand the test of time in your wedding photographs.

Don’t forget you’ll be looking at your dress in your wedding photos for many years to come, so make sure it can stand the test of time!

Q & A With Royal Favourite Jewellery Designer Kiki McDonough

One of the most sought after jewellers in the luxury style set, including a personal favourite of the Duchess of Cambridge herself, Kiki McDonough epitomizes timeless style through her vibrant and wearable pieces perfect for the style-wise bride. Besides the rings, if you could only wear one piece of wedding day jewellery, what would it be?

Earrings to light up and frame the face!

What is your absolute favourite wedding day jewellery piece?

A tiara. Your wedding day is the only time you can wear one, and they are the most beautiful pieces of jewellery.

Colour is a definitive part of your design style – what are some different ways a bride could incorporate colour into her wedding day outfit?

Lots of brides choose blue topaz jewellery. It is a wonderful colour because you can wear it afterwards which is very important. I think it is a shame never to wear your wedding day jewellery again.

bridebook.co.uk-kiki-mcdonough
These gorgeous drop earrings by Kiki McDonough would be perfect for a bride’s ‘something blue’

If a bride wants to keep her ceremony jewellery to the minimum, what are some recommendations for incorporating jewellery pieces at other points of the day and night?

We sell pretty little diamond hoops which are perfect for during the day, and brides can then add drops for the evening.

Or if you really want to add some sparkle for the dance floor, a lovely colourful multi-gemstone necklace is sure to be a show-stopper!

What is the most creative way you have seen blue incorporated into a bride’s wedding day outfit for her ‘something blue’, and how would you recommend a bride do that through her jewellery?

We sell beautiful blue topaz heart pendants and matching earrings surrounded by diamonds. One recent bride wore the blue pendant herself and then bought her bridesmaids matching necklaces, but each one was given a different stone to suit their individual colouring.

bridebook.co.uk-kiki mcdonough's blue topaz pendant
The blue topaz in Kiki McDonough’s gem pendants is simply striking

What type of jewellery did you wear on your wedding day?

I wore a diamond Fleur De Lis brooch belonging to my mother (something old and borrowed), and a little pair of blue topaz earrings (something new and blue).

What was your favourite moment from your wedding and your #1 wedding planning tip for brides to be today?

My favourite moment was leaving the house with my Father, as I really felt I was leaving home for the start of a very exciting new chapter.

My advice would be to always try to take a slow pace throughout the day – it goes so quickly so try to absorb it all and not let it wiz by in a complete flash.

By Yasmin Afshar

Could you walk us through your typical process with a bride?

All of my dresses are bespoke, and having a bespoke dress means the dress is made to fit your measurements exactly and includes a toile fitting, which is a cotton mock-up of the dress so that the bride can see exactly the design and fit of the dress before seeing it in the fabrics of her choice.  There is flexibility on the details of the dress and the fabrics she chooses, so a bride can make it her own.

What do you think is the most challenging aspect of having a bespoke dress?

The most challenging aspect is that the bride needs a certain amount of vision, while understanding that there are some limitations to fabrics and designs one should always keep in mind.

What is your #1 tip to brides preparing for a bespoke fitting?

My number 1 tip is to wear the correct underwear for all the fittings. To have the correct underwear is so important, nude works best and seamless preferably.  A good bra is vital under many of my designs, the Delphinium dress for example needs a backless bra, and luckily these are so readily available now. Marks and Spencer do a brilliant one, the Foxglove dress needs a bra with a transparent back, Boux.co.uk do an excellent one.

What is your favourite wedding dress style and what are your favourite wedding dress details?

At the moment, my favourite design is my Delphinium dress which is new for 2016 and is very Grecian and simple but exquisitely cut in a beautiful heavy crepe.

Could you describe the most challenging assignment you have ever taken on?

Some brides are more challenging than others, but we endeavour to ensure that they are all happy on the day!

What fabrics do you recommend a bride consider for each season?

Heavier fabrics such as zibeline and mikado work well for winter and autumn weddings, whereas softer satins and crepes are more suited to spring and summer. The chantilly laces are so pretty in the warmer months, beach weddings or gardens with that festival vibe, and the guipures are perfect for those golden autumn weddings (our Mimosa gown illustrates this perfectly).  A little bit of fur is fabulous in the winter, we have some exquisite rabbit trims.

Which cuts do you recommend for the bohemiam, modern, whimsical, and classic bride respectively?

Princess lines work perfectly for the classic bride, the fuller skirt, maybe with pleats in a fine mikado for that Grace Kelly look, such as the Orchid gown. Finer silks such as a light weight zibeline work well as a sheath shape for an elegant Jean Shrimpton look, maybe with a grosgrain bow or waist detail, the Sunflower dress is the perfect example of this.

The bohemian bride suits the lighter Amalfi satin or crepe with a fine chantilly lace, look no further than the Primrose dress, below, with its pretty capped sleeve and low back detail.

The modern bride suits a dress like the Foxglove, a streamlined crepe and georgette gown with a boat neck and a low lace back.  Alternatively, for that Chelsea Registry Office look, early sixties vibe, chose the iconic Snapdragon zibeline coat with little strapless lace dress underneath, below.  Accessorise with black and white Kate Spade vintage bag and black shoes.

If you could have designed anyone’s wedding dress – past, present or future – who would it be and why?

The lovely Lily James, currently playing Natasha in War & Peace, would look gorgeous in one of my designs, maybe Primrose or Amaryllis or Foxglove.

What type of dress did you wear on your wedding?

I absolutely love the dress I made for my own wedding 24 years ago, an oyster shantung sheath, dress with Calais lace, slightly off the shoulder, and a lovely slightly ruched back detail.

bridebook.co.uk-louise-selby-on-her-wedding-day
Louise Selby herself in her self-designed wedding dress

What was your favourite moment/memory?

Arriving at the church with my little attendants and seeing my future husband for the first time, waiting for me by the altar.

What is your #1 planning tip for brides today?

The devils in the detail; but chose the details carefully.  Some things are really not that important, don’t worry about the things you can’t control, such as the weather, concentrate on looking after your guests, making them feel part of a really special celebration that they will remember.

Happy Planning!

Q & A with Stephen Jones: Iconic Milliner

Stephen Jones OBE is one of the most iconic and influential milliners of all time. Based in London designing hats for A listers, Stephen’s achievements are endless, including curating the world famous ‘Hats’ exhibition at the V&A in 2009. Bridebook was fortunate enough to speak to Stephen Jones about two things we love: hats and weddings (of course!)

bridebook.co.uk stephen jones with an armful of his hats
The legendary milliner Stephen Jones and some of his creations

Do you think hats are a must-do for all wedding guests?

No it shouldn’t be compulsory to wear a hat, people have freedom of expression, but maybe those who are not really hat wearers should have a go because they’ll realise they’ll have so much fun wearing one, especially on such a special occasion.

Are there any rules when choosing a hat as a wedding guest? (Etiquette, style, occasion type etc.)

Ideally it should not be white as white is the colour of the bride. It should not be too big because if you’re in a Church or a Synagogue you don’t want to obscure the view of the person behind. On the other hand, however, if you’re known as an eccentric dresser you don’t want to let down your audience.

Do you have any tips for choosing the best hat shape for you?

A hat needs to suit your face more than it has to suit your fashion. So if you have a long face don’t wear a tall crowned hat. If you wear glasses, wear a hat with a turned up brim at the front so as not to crowd your face. If you have a broad face, wear a broader brimmed hat or a hat with statement pieces such as flowers. If you have a square face, wear something asymmetric to soften it. You can do all that, but I also think matching is a nice touch. It’s a big enough statement that you’re wearing a hat so you don’t need it to contrast your colours, or have it in any unusual colour. Also keep in mind that whatever colour your hat is gets cast across your face, so beware lime green hats! Sunshine cast through a blue hat tends to add a nice, gentle hue to your skin.

Where did you get married and what was your favourite part of your wedding?

The Chelsea Town Hall in London, a truly lovely venue. My favourite part was seeing a whole line of my guests walking two by two down the road at 9am on Monday morning, on the first day of London Fashion Week, dressed to the nines going to our wedding breakfast.

Some Extra Tips From Us:

  • While we always encourage you to dress for the weather to be comfortable, never ever show too much flesh, it is against wedding etiquette.
  • We strongly recommend you don’t wear white. Sometimes a cream can be acceptable, but really, the white is the bride’s prerogative.
  • If you are wearing a hat, stick to small and neat. You don’t want to be obstructing the view of everyone behind you!
  • Traditionally daytime celebrations are before 5pm, and evening celebrations commence around 6pm.

Introduction: Mother Of The Bride Attire

Long gone are the days when the MOBs had to wear washed out pastels or, horror of horrors, varying shades of the beige suit when their daughters got married. Now bright colours, amazing designs and stunning patterns are available to mums as they watch their daughters walk down the aisle (thank goodness!). Worry not about the amount of choice available! Our guide will make sure you look like an image of sophistication on your daughter’s special day.

Bridebook.co.uk- mother and bride looking at each other before the ceremony
By Allister Freeman

1. Follow the bride

When you start the hunt for the perfect outfit for your child’s wedding, let the bride lead the way. She has spent a significant amount of time setting the tone for the event, so will be able to tell you how formally or casually you should be dressed. She might even have a set idea of what she would like you to wear. So sit down with a glass of bubbly, grab some inspiration and talk through both of your ideas.

Bridebook.co.uk- mother and bride smiling at each other holding glasses of champagne
By Anna Clarke Photography

2. Which colour?

One question we get asked a lot is, “What colour should the Mother of the Bride’s outfit be?”  It’s confusing without a strict guideline available. Some mums prefer to coordinate with the bridesmaids, but not match! But we do suggest you complement each other, so if they are in orange, you could wear a rich blue and look fantastic in the photos. We also suggest that MOBs should shy away from black, which can look mournful, red, which can be a bit racy, or white, which is the colour of the bride. Having said that, if done tastefully, all of the above can look fantastic. Choose a colour (or pattern) that doesn’t clash with the overall colour scheme and you will look absolutely fabulous.

3. Location and season

The wedding venue and the season can be useful when you are deciding on your outfit. If your daughter is going for a beach wedding, then a relaxed dress will be perfect with some comfortable and pretty sandals, but if it’s a chic evening affair, then tailoring and heels are the way to go. The season will also guide you in terms of accessories: you might want a shawl or a blazer to keep warm with and they can be a perfect addition to any outfit. We would suggest you stay away from sky-high stilettos, not only will you have a fairly long day, but you will immediately start sinking in grass or in the sand – not a good look!

Bridebook.co.uk- mother and bride tearing up reflection in the mirror
By Stephen Casey Photography

4. Mother of the Groom

Traditionally, as the MOB, you should choose your dress first and then notify the MOG of your decision. While you don’t need to follow this tradition, it is a nice gesture. After all, you will be in a LOT of photos together so you want to make sure you complement each other in your elegance. This does not mean that you should match, only that your outfits shouldn’t clash with one another. Note to self: start looking for the perfect attire six months before the wedding, leaving enough time for the MOG to find something she likes and for all the altering to be completed in time.

Bridebook.co.uk- mother and bride hugging under the veil

5. Accessories

Demure and elegant are the main words when it comes to choosing your outfit! This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t inject a bit of personality through your accessories. Your daughter’s wedding is the perfect opportunity to wear a stunning hat or an elegant fascinator. If you don’t feel comfortable with either of those, then shawls, scarves and jewellery are a great way of adding some drama to your outfit. Bit of advice: don’t overdo it on jewellery and go with one statement piece. Our favourite look is a cuff bracelet or some statement earrings, with the neck left bear and feminine.

You also shouldn’t forget to take care of your hair and make-up! It is your daughter’s big day, but you shouldn’t leave your own beautification to the last minute. It’s a special day for you – you’re the Mother of the Bride!

Bridebook.co.uk- mother and bride hugging and smiling
By John Lennie

6. Undergarments

Even if you have found the perfect outfit, it won’t feel right until you have the right underwear to go with it. Choosing good hosiery will make you feel comfortable throughout the day and it will flatter your shape, making you look your best in the outfit that you choose! Try taking your dress to the shop so they can help you pick out the best items for you to lift and hold wherever you might need!

Happy Planning!
